Another thought.... would it make any sense to not go directly to the FP line on such a morning, and instead take advantage of short lines at other attractions during, let's say, the first hour... then return to get a FP once the majority of people who have been waiting in line since before park opening have moved through the line? Obviously, the FP return time would be later, but assuming that was not a problem, would one actually spend less time in line that way??

Thats normally fine BUT RSR FP goes very, very quickly. Sometimes they can be gone after the first hour on a really busy day or sometimes last up to 2-3 hours but I dont think any longer than that unless its a bit slow. My only advice is if you are going to do that then track the progress with a good Disney wait time app or call Otto which is the automatic system that tells you the wait times and showtimes. That way if you know they are going fast you can head back to the FP line. But the best advice is to simply wait in the line when you get in and just get the FP ASAP so you know you will have it.

They will start letting you in 30 min before regular park opening, but you won't be alowed on any of the rides, as you will need to show a room key to get to where the EE people are. So, you may as well stand in the Fastpass line, as there's nothing better to do! When we went in Sept (when it was EE every day and we stayed offsite) DH went immediately into the FP line and I took the kids to look in the giftshops. Goofy was walking around, so we waited to see him, and then the FP line started moving at park opening.
If you don't have kids under 7, try the single rider line. That way you won't have to line up to get a FP at all.
