Tips are now added to your final payment? is this correct?

I called DCL to add on cruise transfers, and the person said that i did not have added on to prepay my tips. He stated that at final payment, they will bill my CC for the tips. I stated that when i cruised in June 2012, they had the new tip payment in effect, but that was only charged to my shipboard account the day we got on the ship, and then we went to guest services to have it removed so we could pay our own tips the way we wanted-which is usually more than suggested. We like to give for great service, not be forced to give a certain amount, and we like to hand it to them ourselves.

So will they also charge my card for $336 for tips for 4 of us for a 7 night cruise on final payment, or do they wait until you board, then we can cancel that and pay ourselves still??

I don't like this because this is what I use my OBC for....

I just made my final payment the beg of April for our July cruise and the tips WERE NOT added to our total. I think you got some misinformation.

The CM was wrong, or misspoke. You can add the tips to your final payment, if you wish. Or they will be charged to your onboard account, just as you remember.

I have seen it where it was added to the cruise invoice, but I have just asked them to remove it and it was no problem.

When we cruised a few weeks ago we got tip cards with the suggested amount posted to our account the second to last day. You could go to guest services if you wanted to change the amount or remove it. We just kept the amount and added cash.

ok, i just called back, and they read off the official policy, he stated we can add them on at time of booking, or add them on at final payment, if we do not, then when we board, they will be charged to our stateroom 3 days prior to the end of the cruise and the slips given to us to hand out. He did state if we dont want it charged to the room and want to do our own, we can still go to guest services and ask them not to charge us and give it to them ourselves. he was sorry the other agent gave out mis-information(not the first time)

This is the way it was on our 2012 October cruise & our last cruise this past January. You can Pre Pay your tips in advance (they won't be an open item when you settle your final bill), which is what we've done our last 2 cruises . We just added additional cash to the envelopes on the last night. pirate:

Can I call and pre-pay at any time, or does it have to be added prior to final payment?

I sail in 2-5 weeks, but if I go ahead and prepay the tips now I could earn Disney Reward dollars since it should go through before my monthly statement closing date.

You should be able to pre-pay at anytime. Just call DCL and tell them you want to.

Don't really understand why you would bother to stand in line at Guest Service to have the tips taken off your account so you "can pay them yourselves". you still hand out tip envelopes to the staff when the tips are charged to your account. If you want to give more you can just add cash to envelopes. Why stand in a line you don't need to!!

I love the new method....we get the tip vouchers and envelopes delivered to our room, put the vouchers in the envelope and add as much cash as we want above and beyond. We then personally hand out the envelopes to the staff. Easy peasy!! Just because they automatically charge them to your account doesn't mean you don't still hand out the tips to the staff personally.

I'm not a big fan of all these tips
I am a person that tips well for things done for me. What I do not like is all cruise lines have turned it into the pay for the people. If we do not give them these tips they do not make any money.

PP may want to pay cash.

PP may want to pay cash.

then wouldn't it be easier to just apply the cash to your on board account instead of taking it off and putting the cash in envelopes? just curious because I have heard several people say they do this and I just can't understand how it is better. seems to me it would take longer to have guest services remove them than it would to have guest services apply a credit. if you want to add extra to the envelope its easily done.
I look at it this way, cruise lines want you to pay tips so employees get 'paid'. either we do it this way or they up the cost of a cruise and you pay it anyways. some of the lines are already doing that. i'm sure the cruise line knows who leaves tips and who doesn't. you can say I paid in cash but the person would know if they got a tip from you or not and i'm sure its probably reported and recorded somewhere.
NOT looking for a debate or to get flamed, just sayin......

Anywhere that a tip is expected does this. Have you ever worked a tipped job? I have many friends who are waitresses who say it is almost impossible to prove their tips didn't equal minimum wage because their boss claims the pocketed money with out reporting it.

Also some places (Starbucks I know I worked there) report their tips and take out the tax for them. However Starbucks just does a standard .50 an hour. Well for weeks I made less than .50 an hour in tips there was no way for me to get that back from the company.

If they weren't charging tip they would just add it to the cost of the cruise an inform you tipping is not necessary as it is included in the price but that you may tip above and beyond I you so choose.

I was just reviewing my cruise documents and included in this packet is an option to prepay the tips a certain number of days before the cruise. It also gives the option to do nothing and have them added to your KTTW bill 3 days before the end of your cruise and also to go to guest services at any time to pay or adjust.

It appears the default is still to have them charged after sailing, but perhaps so many people were wanting to prepay they made it an option? I know the last night of my last 7 day cruise the GS lines were really really long, and most of it was tip adjustments.

We almost always settle our on board account in cash. I earmark OBC for tips first. When I get the tip envelopes, we usually add cash to them, and then go to GS to put cash on our account for our expenses anyways. There's no way I'd remove the tips just to put all cash in the envelopes (especially since OBC covers our tips).

So answer a PP's question, yes, it's easier to just add cash to your account.
