SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. went public with 20 million shares of stock on this week and in doing so, received a surprise from one of its biggest opponents. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) stepped up and bought enough shares to give them "the right to attend and speak at annual meetings and to submit shareholder resolutions asking for policy changes." Stock sold for $30.56 at opening.

Michelle Kretzer of PETA says their "first order of business as part owners of SeaWorld" will be "getting the orcas out - including Corky, who has been enslaved by SeaWorld for 44 years." They also plan to "educate stockholders about how marine parks tear orcas and dolphins away from their homes and families and imprison them in minuscule concrete tanks, where they suffer from captivity-induced stress and illness."

Interesting! Will they have enough power to actually do the things they want to do?

ETA: The whales and the dolphins are the primary draw to Sea World for most people. A lot of the other animals you see there can be found at your local aquarium or zoo. I'm not educated enough to comment on how the animals are obtained or if they are living a miserable existence, but I would think that if they were removed from the park, Sea World would have a dramatic drop in attendance. It may even put them out of business.

No. Not unless they get a lot of other shareholders to agree, which isn't likely since it would effectively end the SeaWorld parks. All they are looking for is a stage from which to shout.

This is a really evil group and plain strange. If any dogs or cats are turned over to them, they put them down! they don't even try to find homes for them. They don't believe people should have any animals as pets!

The only time PETA does this is if the animals are set to be euthanized in an inhumane way (like poison or gassing), and they euthanize them humanely. Please do not blame PETA, when you should be blaming people who contribute to overpopulation.

I agree the people who don't neuter or spay their animals are as well wrong.

But for a group so impressed with themselves about loving animals to put dogs and cat down (no matter if it humane or not) without trying to find homes.......they are evil!

So with all do respect....I will continue to blame PETA.

They put down the vast majority of the animals they get. It appears that they are even against people having pets.

SeaWorld does not tear animals away from their homes. If they plan to educate I hope that they at least tell the truth.

I thought PETA was legit as a kid. I had seen some (obviously biased) kid's news article in school lauding how they did so much work to protect animals...and the I went on the Internet and their latest campaign was to get goldfish renamed as 'sea kittens'.

Lol, nope. Not legit, a bunch of stupid people who like standing on soapboxes and preaching while not really helping the cause at all.

Here's hoping their presence as shareholders doesn't cause any major problems. While I know that some of Sea World's practises are bad, PETA has the ability to make activism seem like a joke. Remove the whales? How about figuring out how to treat them humanely instead?

In general I think that what PETA does is sad. I am a huge animal lover and at first glance I was all about PETA because I thought they were saving animals and helping them survive horrible conditions and situations but as I got older and read more about the organization I was really discouraged to see what I was reading.

Is it to much to ask for that an organization to actually do something good without having their own agenda to bash people and make the public think they are doing one thing when they are not!

Okay rant over haha as for Seaworld I would hope they treat the animals well since they are the reason they have such an audience attending their parks. My friend was a trainer there and she said the conditions were great but I've never seen first hand. I wonder how much power PETA now has over Seaworld.

The "profit" from owning stock must be used for their advocacy activities.

They bought enough shares to be able to attend share holder meetings and pettition to get items on ballot to vote on at share holder meetings.

As long as all the money is spent by Dec. 31st 11:59:59 PM they are still non-profit. Rememer most Non-profit organizations still have to pay some their employees, Doctors don't work for free at non-profit hospitals. Plus any dividends on 80 shares wont be that much.

Once upon a time I bought their ideas hook, line, and sinker. The problem is the good they could do in actual places abuse is blatantly occurring gets watered down in their misguided fights against all animal use.
