The jabead Family went to Disney World! 3/23-3/30/13 COMPLETE

Some day I am going to get to go to the Tea. It is just not something that DS wants to do! He would if I asked but knowing that he would be uncomfortable, I will wait until DH can go with me in the future!

Glad you two were able to get there nice & dry! We were wet enough for all of us! :upsidedow

That was so nice of the good folks at WL to arrange for the transportation to get to GF! Glad you were able to keep your tradition alive! :) Crazy rains! I remember seeing Vicki's photos and that was just wild.

Do they accept TiW at the GF tea? It may be on my radar for December....hmmm... ladies tea. Sounds good!

Barb: I'm so glad that you shared your proud mom photo of your DS and his girlfriend. They look so lovely!

That was so nice of the CM at WL to call a cab for you :)

Looks like your tea at the GF was delicious. In the UK Scones would always be served with a fruit conserve, nearly always strawberry, rather than lemon curd so you certainly went for the traditional choice!

Brenda, I am pretty sure that they do take TIW (think I read on someone else's review)

Great Review of the Garden View Tea Room.

DD & I have also made it a mother/daughter tradition to go to the tea. We love it.

I am going to take the suggestion to substitute the shrimp tea sandwich for another but I really like the egg salad, so I am going to trade for that one. I also like that you went ala carte. We have a plan to do this also but DD is 11, so she is still going to get the Mrs. Potts tea and she is picky. So it is all good. I want DD to try the scones this time. So I plan to order a plate of scones for her.

I can't wait to return!

:goodvibes

I can confirm that they do indeed accept the TIW card at the GF Tea.

Ladies tea sounds so fun!!! We have to do something fun like that.

Barb- love your son's girlfriends dress! So pretty.

And that lemon curd was amazing. I as well could drink a glass of it!

i took barb's advice & substituted the salmon & got an extra pear & gorgonzola sandwich. it was great advice from barb. :thumbsup2 the pear & gorgonzola sandwich was delicious.

I love GF tea! It's a tradition now for me too. The lemon curd is absolutely divine. Apparently it's the GF Head pastry chef's family recipe. I could eat a bucket of it. :)

I am definitely going to give the lemon curd a try next time. I'm not a big fan of lemon generally, but I need to satisfy my curiosity. I figure that if I don't like it, I can always switch back to the tried and true strawberry preserves, right? ;)

It looks like maybe we should add a ladies' tea at the GVL as an option for a DISmeet in December. What do you think, Linda? :)

Actually shrimp salad is what they used to have as part of their 5 tea sandwich assortment at the Garden View and it was always good. This last visit though it had been replaced by the smelly salmon, which was not good at all. Not sure if the change is a permanent one or temporary. And of course, there is also a possibility that we just had a bad (old???) batch. On a positive note, at least it didn't make us sick...which I was a little afraid of. :crazy2:

We used TIW on our visit. :)

Looks like you already got your answer Brenda. I think I should go back and add that valuable piece of information to my review, as the Garden View tea is one of those iffy places that you wouldn't assume offered the TIW discount since they are not on the DDP and as far as I know don't offer any other discounts like AP or DVC.

Yay for the pear & gorgonzola! :cheer2: But I have to ask...did Rachel substitute too or did she give the salmon a try? I'm very curious to know if we had a bad batch or if their salmon salad always tastes "like a barn smells". :lmao:

Our original plan for after our tea was for DD and I to take the monorail to the Polynesian to meet up with Vicki (GoofySon'sMom) and Andrew. My DH and DS were to drive from the Wilderness Lodge and meet us there as well. However, during our tea, I received a text from Vicki saying they had been forced to return to AoA to dry out after getting caught in the storm at Magic Kingdom. Consequently, they wouldn't be able to make it for our DISmeet at the Poly. But don't worry folks, 'cause neither rain, nor wind, nor soaking wet clothes would keep us from meeting. We would just have to wait a bit longer. ;)

But with the Polynesian DISmeet cancelled, DH picked us up when we finished our tea and we returned to the Wilderness Lodge. It was about this time that DH told me that he didn't want to go with us to dinner that night because he wanted to stay in the room and watch the Illinois basketball game (NCAA tourney). Being the good wife that I am ;), I not only let him off the hook for dinner but I also offered to go down to Roaring Forks to get him something to eat while he watched the game.

And so that is why my next dining review is titled,

Dinner for One from...

First a couple of menu pics...

And a few display case pics...

A few of the Roaring Fork cupcake offerings...

Carrot cake, Chocolate, and S'mores

I'm still kicking myself for not getting one of those S'mores cupcakes!!!

But DH said he wanted something light and since he had enjoyed my Colony Salad from lunch so much ;), I decided to get him a similar salad which was listed on the menu at Roaring Fork.

Wilderness Salad with Chicken, Walnuts, Apples, Cheddar Cheese, and Croutons
His Rating - 3/5

He said this was good but not nearly as good as the one at Liberty Tree Tavern. Of course, his opinion may have been negatively affected by the fact that Illinois got beat by Miami that night (63 - 59) and their season came to an end. My DH claims that the victory was stolen from Illinois by a bad call from the refs near the end of the game. So I'm thinking that perhaps his dinner that night may have tasted a bit like sour grapes??? ;)

Next up: The rest of the family has dinner at Tony's

I am enjoying reading along. I don't have a daughter to go to the GVL Tea, my DH and I come in May, maybe I can convince him to go along..doubtful

Too funny! Enjoying the reviews!

Mmm

More food from the Lodge :)

The carrot cake cupcake from there is yummy

I will PM you later with some December ideas but I am thinking I should set up a traditional English tea for all the ladies at GF :)

I have lurked for awhile in your threads and I am really enjoying your family one. WL is my dream place to stay someday and I love seeing all the on site resturants.

My last installment ended with our early lunch at Liberty Tree Tavern. Since we had already checked off everything on our Magic Kingdom list, we decided it was then time to head back to Wilderness Lodge for an afternoon nap. As we were walking down Main Street to make our exit, my family took note of how crowded the park had become while we were inside LTT having our lunch. I know this because on the bus back to our resort they actually thanked me for making them get up early that morning in order to avoid the massive crowds that had now descended upon Magic Kingdom. ;) Oh, and though we didn't yet know it, they actually owed me a double-dose of gratitude for our early arrival (which then allowed for our early exit), because the sea of people we had just seen on Main Street would soon be replaced by a sea of water...

Picture borrowed from Vicki's (GoofySon'sMom) Dining Report
(If you haven't yet read this installment of her report, which I will title "Hang on to your balloons!!!" ;), be sure to do so. Here is the LINK.)

Meanwhile, we were happily napping in our room at the Wilderness Lodge and with our drapes closed, were completely oblivious to the storm which was developing. My phone alarm went off 15 min. before we needed to leave for our tea (DH had agreed to drive us to the Grand Floridian). DD and I had just enough time to change clothes and then the three of us were out our door and on our way out to the parking lot to retrieve our car. However, upon reaching the lobby we stopped dead in our tracks when we saw what was happening outside. This was not the usual quick and light rainstorm that we have experienced many times during our trips to Florida. You know, the kind where you pull out your umbrella and continue on your merry way :umbrella: and then before you know it, the sun is shining again. No this was the "Mighty winds a'blowing, sideways deluge" kind of rain that no umbrella could possibly protect you from.

The kind where you end up looking something like this...

(The picture Vicki sent to Rachel that afternoon for the Live Thread)

So needless to say, I made a quick about face and headed directly to the Guest Services desk to change our reservation to another day. I then soon discovered that there were no other available times that would work with our schedule. While I was breaking the bad news to DD, the Guest Services CM called over a manager to see if there was anything that could be done to remedy our situation. We were then pleasantly surprised when the manager handed us a voucher for a complimentary cab ride over to the Grand Floridian and promised to call over and let them know that we were on our way. And so, with the help of a little pixie dust, we arrived for our tea 45 minutes late, but more importantly we arrived DRY! :thumbsup2

But let me back up just a bit to explain the reason behind this dining choice. Having afternoon tea at the Garden View Lounge has long been a tradition for my DD and me. Our first time was in Nov. 2007 and we were celebrating my DD's 18th birthday.

My very happy DD donning the birthday tiara she was given by our server.

From that time on we were hooked and have included a mother/daughter tea in our plans during every Disney World trip since.

And so, this was our 6th time having Afternoon Tea at the...

Here are some pictures of the menu we were presented...

Since we had already had our lunch, we decided not to have the "Grand Tea" or "Buckingham Palace" like we normally do.
Instead we ordered from the a la carte menu...

We each started with a pot of tea and a plate of tea sandwiches...

For our tea, we both chose our favorite, which is one of the Garden View Lounge's Signature Blends...

Princess Breakfast Tea for Two

Of course, when sipping tea in a lovely and sophisticated place like the Garden View, it is mandatory to raise your pinkie. :lmao:

And here is a picture of the tea sandwiches...

5 Assorted Tea Sandwiches - Pear & Gorgonzola, Curried Chicken Salad, Salmon Salad, Egg Salad and Cucumber & Watercress - Our Rating 4/5
(and as a bonus you receive a delicious little sweet onion tart)

These were all very good, just as they have always been, except for the salmon one. It has replaced the Shrimp Salad in the assortment, and it was not a good change. :sad2: My DD described the flavor of the salmon as being "like a barn smells." :confused3 Now I'm not entirely sure what she meant by this, but I can tell you that this sandwich smelled and tasted very fishy. :crazy2: Next time, we will definitely be requesting a substitute, which for me will be my favorite...the Pear & Gorgonzola. :thumbsup2

For our second and final course, we shared one a la carte order of the Freshly Baked Scones...

Our Rating - 5/5

We each received a plate with one scone and two small bowls, one with a scoop of Devonshire Cream and the other filled with Strawberry Preserves. While you are given a choice of Strawberry Preserves or Lemon Curd, we have always chosen the preserves. However, after hearing from emmebear and Rachel on the Live Thread that the lemon curd is heavenly here, I think next time I'm going to give it a try. But regardless of which second topping you choose, you can't really go wrong here once you have generously slathered that Devonshire Cream on your scone. The preserves or lemon curd are just "icing on the cake".

We were too full for the strawberries & whipped cream, English Trifle, or assorted pastries which are usually part of the next course. So I will finish this review with another picture of my DD...

No tiara this time, but still looking very happy!

And with that, here ends another Mother/Daughter Tea at the Garden View, which was Practically Perfect in Every Way. :goodvibes

ETA: Although the Garden View Tea is not part of the DDP and as far as I know does not offer any other discounts (like AP or DVC), it does accept Tables in Wonderland for a 20% discount.

Next up: Dinner for one from Roaring Forks

My DD have been having tea at the GF annually since she was 3 years old. I have to dig up the pictures of her on our first trip there...
But we love it and she requests it every time we're in WDW. We are heading back this August and of course we have tea booked! Your review has made me want to try the scones and I am happy that it is possible to substitute the sandwiches if you don't like one. Thank you!
(Going to look for that picture, now...)

Yay for the pear & gorgonzola! :cheer2: But I have to ask...did Rachel substitute too or did she give the salmon a try? I'm very curious to know if we had a bad batch or if their salmon salad always tastes "like a barn smells". :lmao:

I had it but I don't remember it tasting bad. It was my least favorite but it wasn't overpowering fishy smell, haha.

Ladies tea in December, I have my pinkies manicured and ready for this!!! :thumbsup2

My condolences for the Illinois loss but at least your DH has a nice wife who delivered dinner!! :)

We tried one of those S'mores cupcakes last September, but thought it was just OK. So I am not sure if you were missing anything.

Of course being English I have afternoon tea served from fine china every day ;)
I think it sounds like this is the one event that is a must!

Some of you may have noticed that the Live Thread was closed tonight. I have sent a PM to a couple of the moderators to inquire as to why it was closed but I suspect that since the thread just reached 250 pages long that that might be the maximum length for a thread here on the DIS. If so, I guess I will be forced to start a new thread, which is ok except at this point the thread is locked so I can't even transfer anything over (like the Table of Contents pages) or do any edits to the existing posts (like the April/May Game totals). UGH! :scared:

So anyway, please stay tuned while I figure out what's going on. :confused3
