Port Orleans French Quarter Q&A Thread, New for 2012 (thread now FULL and CLOSED)

We had a fantastic stay back in January! It was our first family visit and we have Disney fever now. We are a family of 5 (the youngest was 2 at the time of our visit). Planning our next visit for late 2014/early 2015. Will we be able to return FQ with our boys (ages 10, 7 and 4)? We used an air mattress at our last stay for one son because the youngest wouldn't use the pack n play.

You can't stay in POFQ with 5 unless one is under the age of 3 (or you get two rooms). You can stay in POR in the Alligator Bayou section with 3, though.

Any recommendations on rooms/buildings for first timers here? Not first timers to Disney, but will be our first stay at the FQ. We are going to have 4 adults and 2 children (children will be 6 and 9). I am already going to request connecting rooms which does make things difficult to get a better view when asking for an upgrade at check-in. Seems like a few of you have gotten upgrades without even asking which is nice. Anything special I should request? For repeat visitors, where did you find you liked being the most on property?

We like building 4 because it's near the bus stop and food court. Nice view of a beautiful court yard too, your kids may like a pool view room. Or water view on the river.

Well, boo. We really liked FQ and thought POR was too spread out. Thanks for the response!

Hi gang,
I am a newbie to this resort, I have 4 million questions. We are a CBR family, but looking for a new resort. It will be me big kid at heart, wifey, 3 kids, boys age 13 and 3 and the princess aged 18 months.

1. Does the French quarter have a arcade?

2. Have you ever have any problems with seating in the food courts, crowds? What about size of food court, is it big enough?

3. Did you find the rooms big enough?

4. Did the food court offer different choices or variety?

5. Is there anything that the resort does not offer that you missed or is not available at French quater that was a must have and offered at riverside?

6. anyting you think I should know about this resort

Thank you all!

If you definitely want to change your dates, do it now anyway. There is no charge from Disney.

You can then see what offers come out closer to the time - but if any do get released, jump on them quickly as POFQ does not always have as much availability as other resorts.

Andre

Thanks for advice Andre.

Another quick question - it was mentioned that if you add a package to your room only reservation they refund your room only deposit and you have to pay the package deposit?

I've never done it, but that would make sense as the room-only deposit is just one room-night, whereas the package amount is probably more than that.

Hi Mr FDNY!

I will answer your opinion questions:

Based on the two little one's ages - you may still prefer CBR as the kiddie pool there with the pirate ship is pretty awesome and better than the POFQ or POR kiddie pools. But if you want new place, we loved POFQ with DS7 and DD5 last march. They enjoyed the POFQ waterslide and pool with no complaints. Your eldest might find the slide theme a bit too young for him whereas the POR slide is not much bigger but less cartoony of a theme. Depends on the kid. My kids are not yet at the "I'm to old for that" stage (fingers crossed).

2. Went at Spring Break so busy and no problems with FC seating. Plenty of options for us for the few meals we had there over 8 days - 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 1 dinner. Po boys were tasty, breakfasts were fine, chicken meals good. We enjoyed the beignets!

3. Yes - four of us though, you have an extra little one :)

5. An evening walk to/from POR is nice. We had a food court dinner there one night at the make your own salad/pasta line which was good. Shopped in the gift shop which is larger and the kids played on the playground. One visit was fine for that. Very fun and low key if you like exploring a bit after a busy park day. Never went in the POR pool though might when we go next time if time allows.

6. No quiet pools which was not an issue for us. Everything is close which we loved. Smores/campfire is fun as is the evening movie with beignets. Boat to DTD and POR was very enjoyable and relaxing. Buses were rarely shared with POR so only one stop which rocked(we went during SB tho). I love the feel of this resort better than POR which is also very lovely - my comparison is POFQ is "urban" new orleans and POR is "suburban" or even rural New Orleans/south. I am an urban girl :) CBR was also very nice when we stayed but the walk to PRoyale across the lake was alot for a quick AM trip before buses to park rope drop. And the multiple bus stops did not appeal which are two reasons I am hopeful to stay at FQ again in October and not Riverside. But if Riverside gets a better discount, we will stay there happily.

Enjoy the trip whatever you do!

DS16 and I will be staying at POFQ for the first time 8/23-9/1. So excited as we usually stay at POP. I'm having my knee replaced on 5/7 :worried: I still hope to go on our trip, probably with a scooter. Should I wait and just do on-line check in to request close to main building/food court/buses and first floor or should I go through Disney reservations now to say that I will probably be disabled when we go?

Thank you!!

I booked today for mid-May, 4 nights at French Quarter in a King room. Hubby and I are excited! We are hoping this will be a more laid back, relaxing trip. (What are the chances?) This will be our first POFQ stay.

That's correct. The reservations are handled by separate departments for room only and packages.

A room only res requires pre-payment of your first night (so for a value or mod in most seasons is less than $200, for a Deluxe it will be much more than $200). The balance is due when you stay.

Package deposits -- stays of room plus tickets and dining if you opt for it -- are $200 with the balance due 45 days before travel.

If you have a room-only reservation that you convert to a package, they will refund the original form of payment (takes 8-10 days, may take 1-2 billing cycles to show on your statement) , and then you will be charged a new $200 deposit.

I would definitely contact them in advance. Sounds like it will be longer distance walking that'll be your problem, so you probably won't need a fully adapted room with roll-in style shower, but I'd have thought a "Florida Special" room (i.e. with extra grab-bars next to the bath, etc.) might help you. Those rooms are indicated with red room numbers on my floorplan maps. I'd suggest calling the special assistance line on 1-407-939-7807 and see what they can get set up for you to make life easier.

Is it warm enough at the end of February to swim? We normally travel in the summer months, but I'm planning on running the Princess Half in February so we are doing a family vacation then! I think my girls would be disappointed if they could not avail of the pools!

when is the entertainment schedule for may likely to be out? My kids are desparate to know if Wreck it Ralph will be showing at the resort! Thanks

Depends on your luck, and how hardy you are. It might be mid/upper 70s during the middle of the day, or it might be 40s-50s. The water is heated of course, but the air isn't...
