Wishes Dessert Party

Has anyone done this to get fireworks photos? My family and I are going in May and one goal of my trip is to get some excellent photos from Wishes. My biggest concern is getting a good spot for the show. This would seem to take care of that and my family would be entertained with dessert!

But, I'd like to hear someone's take on it before In consider it any further. And, if you have any photos taken from that location, please share!

It is a pretty good location to photograph the show because the barrier keeps people from being immediately in front of you. So you can easily set up a tripod right by the wall. The downside is that even at the dessert party, people do line up against the railing for a fireworks spot. So you'll need to set up your tripod and camera about as soon as you get in and switch off watching the camera to get desserts. Kind of takes the fun away a little. Also, it's not a straight on view, but an angled view (sure you've realized this). And you still have to get there over an hour prior to the show, so you aren't really saving yourself any time... you just get desserts.

It's all preference, but I would argue that the better location for photos is on top of the train station. And then the bridge to Tomorrowland is also a good location. You'd have to stake out those spots, but you still have to stake out spots with the dessert party.

Thanks for the feedback. How early do you stake out your spot? Also, doesn't the flag pole get in the way at the train station? Finally, could you effectively shoot from the station with a 50mm or 18-55mm?

As already stated, the view of the castle is not straight on so some of the bursts are offset from the castle. I set up my tripod as soon as I was allowed into the space by the rail and had no problems with the crowd. The pictures below were my first attempt shooting Disney fireworks with a dSLR. I will spare you the point and shoot pictures from the year before.

I have no idea why I chose to shoot these in portrait orientation. Also there is water between you and the castle giving you some reflections. Unfortunately, there are trees also between you and the castle. So, the bottom of the castle is obstructed by the trees.

We did the Wishes Desert party during our trip in January of this year. As stated, you get the opportunity for an unobstructed view but it is off to the right of the castle. I had plenty of time to enjoy the food and then set up my tripod at the railing. I believe I was the only one with a tripod and would not describe it as overly crowded. If you want the perfect picture of Wishes, this is probably not the spot. If you want to enjoy food with family and/or friends and not have to stake out your position for photos extremely early, then the Desert party is a good deal. (except for the cost). They may have changed the policy, but in June, 2010, they were not allowing tripods at the railing. I had to use my Joby tripod on a table. I was able to get a few good shots, but it would not be my preferred spot. With the spending of the money to attend the Dessert Party, IMHO, it's better spent in enjoying the Party with family and friends. Leave the fireworks photography for another time. Besides I found the food porn photography more fun. I got to eat the subject of the photography!

Because I wasn't allowed to the railing I had to deal with the overhang.

We were there in February this year and had no problems setting up a tripod against the rail. I really liked not having to fight the crowds on the street.
