Port Orleans Riverside Q&A Thread 2013, Part One [Thread now FULL and closed]

We just returned from a four-night stay. This was our first moderate after staying at the deluxe level three times (I don't know if the Dolphin is considered deluxe, but I consider it to be that level). We should've faxed a room request per all the posts on these Boards, but instead we only put in a request for Magnolia Bend when we made the reservation. We ended up in AB Building 24 (Room 2436, to be specific). At first, I wasn't sure I'd be happy there, but in the end I totally loved our location! It was quiet and out of the way.

We really liked the atmosphere of the resort. The plant life and decor all made it seem very true to the New Orleans theme. We also thought the staff were friendly and helpful. We had a towel Mickey on our bed when we checked in, and got another towel animal our second day (we're not sure what it was supposed to be, but we're thinking it was two swans). We had no issues with bus service (yes, we were lucky). Our room was very close to the West Depot, which was either the first pickup or the third pickup for the buses, so we never had to wait for another bus. Yes, we had a view of the parking lot when we stepped out our door, but that didn't matter one bit. We kept our shutters closed most of the time so people walking by wouldn't be able to see inside, so what is the point of the nice view? We never heard much noise from other rooms (maybe the occasional toilet flush), and we didn't have to deal with the hundreds of high school seniors staying at MB (we got plenty of exposure to them every time we picked up at the East Depot). We took a carriage ride and rented a surrey bike, both of which were a lot of fun. Never got the chance to use the pool(s), but the quiet pool was right by our building and always looked inviting.

Now, there were a few things I wasn't that happy about. Not having a luggage rack in the room was weird to me. It might've been ok if there was any real dresser for clothes, but instead the AB rooms have a few drawers at the bottom of the trundle bed, and a couple of shelves next to the fridge area. Neither of these was suitable to put our clothes in (I didn't want to continuously have to bend down to the ground to open the trundle drawers), so we ended up living out of the suitcases...one was on the couch/trundle, and the other was on the ledge above the air conditioner. When we first got into our room, there were small hairs in quite a few areas (sink, back of the tub, on the mattress cover (the part that is beneath the actual sheets). The room was clean overall, and we didn't request mousekeeping to come clean, but I think either someone very hairy stayed in the room before us, or mousekeeping wasn't very careful. Both of our initial shampoo/conditioner bottles were missing one Mickey ear...not a big deal, but little touches count. The light switch for the vanity area was behind the cord for the hair dryer, which was annoying. I hated the shower...I had to turn it almost all the way around just to get water that was hot enough, and the "rain" style shower head just didn't have enough power (guess that's a personal preference). On our first morning, I turned on the shower to let the water warm up, went over to the sink, and all of a sudden there was water all over the floor! Turns out, the ledge at the back of the shower basically acted as a conduit for the water to run right out. After that, we made sure to aim the shower head as far down as we could, and put a washcloth at the edge of the ledge just in case. We could only plug certain devices into certain outlets because the plugs would just fall out if they didn't have a bigger side to the plug. Finally, we couldn't even use the empty outlet behind the bedside table because it was just far enough behind the bedpost that you couldn't reach it...in fact, the plug for the alarm clock was only partially in the outlet (just enough to power the device).

I guess most of these issues are really minor, and we would still definitely return. In fact, I would request AB Building 24 again because it was so peaceful and close to the bus stop. Overall, it was a good vacation, and I'm glad we chose POR.

Nice little trip report, thank you for that.

I can see how some of those little things would be annoying, but I suppose that are just that, little. Although the trundle bed/lack of shelves, is one of the key reasons we have requiested the Mansions section.

Sounds like a nice trip, if you didn't have time to use the pools, it must have been full :)

Just 17 days away, and we will be spending 2 weeks there ... I honestly like saying the new day count every day, can wait til the days left are fewer then the number of days we will be there :

Glad you had a good time !!!! .... how long til you start planning the next ??? :)

2 weeks is fantastic! If we had been there longer, I think we would've definitely made it to the pools more than once. Our Premier APs expire in June, and we're planning on taking at least a year off, but then we're thinking of going with our baby sometime in 2014-15. Seems so far away :sad1: Hope you have a great trip! :goodvibes

We are staying at the Art of animation Aug.29-sept.2nd. I was thinking of possibly switching from the little mermaid standard room to a Port Orleans riverside Royal guest room. The resort looks really neat and the walk from the bus stop looks a lot shorter (the walk from AOA standard rooms is 10 min or longer). Would anybody recommend this? are the rooms pretty neat?

I haven't stayed yet, but we just made the exact switch for our August trip. The grounds look beautiful and the rooms have queen beds (AOA have doubles). When I called to change it the person I spoke with suggested that I request Oak Manor b/c it is closer to the main areas of the resort. I also like the idea that we can walk to FQ and use the pool there. Check out portorleans.org. The site has a lot of great info and all ears.net has video of the royal rooms. Good luck!

We have two river view rooms booked for early June. I noticed that the cm making our reservation made a notation for adjoining rooms. We REALLY want to be in a mansion building and I'm wondering if the adjoining rooms note will decrease our chances. While we would want to be in the same building, adjoining rooms is not a concern. I'm just wondering if I should ask them to remove that notation from our reservation.

46 days :yay:

We are starting to do the same thing, cycling annual passes. Getting APs for this trip, then taking another before they expire, waiting a year, and doing the 2 trips almost a year apart again, but getting to use the APs twice.

That is part of our plan, having enough time to take a day out of the parks (or only spend a couple hours in the parks) so that we have time to enjoy the resort ... but I know its tough to be able to come up with that amount of time. I am lucky that my job allows that flex.

How weird?? I have 198 days until our October trip to POR and I just received my Magical Express packet in the mail??? I have never received it this early.

I've got about that long and I just received a really nice booklet in the mail outlining out trip and various options for enjoying it, but it wasn't the ME packet.

I'm looking into flights for our August/September trip. We arrive on 8/31 and leave 9/8. I'm trying to decide on either a red eye flight on Friday evening or a morning flight on Saturday. The red eye lands at MCO around 9:30/9:45 am after leaving Phoenix at 11:45 or so. The Saturday flight would leave Phoenix around 9am and arrive at MCO between 4 and 5:30 pm. Part of me thinks if we take the red eye we can hang out a full day longer but I'm concerned about what we would do between arrival and being able to check in at 3. Is there any chance of getting a very early check in? I know we can have our luggage stored and hang by the pool, explore the grounds, etc. But it would be nice if we could check in early and have a nap.

You can check in the moment you arrive at the hotel, if the room is ready, you'll get it then. If not, they will page you when it is ready.

I did the same thing a few years ago. I arrived at the GF at 9am and checked in. The room wasn't ready, so I went to MK for a while. I got a page around noon and was able to go back and get the room key. (and take a nap. :))

Although the trundle bed/lack of shelves, is one of the key reasons we have requiested the Mansions section.

I agree, it's the one big thing that they didn't think through properly with the refurbished rooms. All of the Port Orleans rooms now have only three storage drawers (compared with 4/5 before the refit). Alligator Bayou suffers the most as you also lose the large countertop area and the luggage seat, yet you can have more people in the room.

We REALLY want to be in a mansion building and I'm wondering if the adjoining rooms note will decrease our chances.

Don't worry, there are just as many connecting rooms in the mansions as there are in the AB section, around 50% or so.

By the way, I assume you meant to request CONNECTING rooms (i.e. with an internal doorway between the rooms) rather than just adjoining (meaning next door, or very nearby) rooms. Might be worth checking that.

We are going on our first WDW family vacation with 2 and 4 year old DD in October. The 4 year old will turn 5 during the trip. Any suggestions for a POR 1st timer? Best rooms to request with small kids, special birthday requests to make, etc.
Thanks!!

Def make it known on your reservation (and any ADRs) that its your DD's Bday, sometimes magic happens when you do this. We put that it was our honeymoon on all our ADRs last year, and some of the restaurants did some really sweet stuff.

As for rooms, thats a tougher call, I am sure the Royal Rooms would be a huge hit, but I am always wary of spending extra money on stuff like that for very young kids, as I don't think they actually remember them, so its a bit of a waste. But your 4/5 yr o ... might be at the point she would remember. Hard call, I am sure a Royal room would make for great photos though.

Otherwise, maybe Aligator Bayou, if the DDs are giving you any issues about sleeping you could just use the fold down bed and separate them...

I agree, that is weird!

I would like 2 more POR ME tags since we are going to take advantage of our free luggage on United, but I am hesitant to call and request them this early. Oh we'll maybe I will get another ME package when it gets closer, LOL.

Hello all,

I have just returned from 7 days at POR. We loved the resort!

We had booked a Royal Room with garden view and I had sent a fax asked for a 2nd floor corner room. We were in Oak Manor building 90, near the fountain and the movies at night.

The only downside was mousekeeping for us. We did leave a tip everyday. Upon our arrival, the toilet handle was broken, so the toilet didn't flush. The fridge in the room didn't close, so nothing stayed cold. And we found stuff from the previous owners (wallet, cosmetics, etc.) The fridge and toilet were promptly repaired, but I was getting worries that the front desk would find us very annoying to keep on calling back. On another day, they left no shampoo, no coffee cup and soap. We had to call back once again.

Other than that, the grounds were beautiful. The activities at the big pool were fun. The room was beautiful and big enough for 3 adults and a child. We enjoyed our location and the possibility to have a drink in our corner table looking our the windows to the courtyard.

Everynight, my daughter would start her fireworks... and so did my mom!!

We enjoyed our stay and I would definitely recommend it to everyone.

You will only get one per person; you can request more after you receive the package.

You cannot call ahead of time and ask them to throw a couple of extra ones in your package.

For future reference, you don't have to worry about "bothering the front desk" calling back multiple times. Your calls, just like calling from home or work, are routed to a call center that routes your call to the correct department. You are never talking to the front desk - ever.
