Disney announces Star Wars Episode VIII to be released in 2017, Episode IX in 2019

Six months after stunning Hollywood with its $4.05 billion LucasFilm acquisition, Disney announced that it plans to release the next three “Star Wars” films in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Disney Studios chief Alan Horn made the revelation on Wednesday at the studio’s CinemaCon presentation after touting LuscasFilm as “perfect for the family imprimatur” of Disney.

Disney disclosed last October that it would open “Star Wars: Episode VII” in 2015 and Horn said Wednesday that it would be a summer release, followed by the next two alternating every other year. He also said that Disney and LucasFilm are working on other films related to “Star Wars” characters but did not elaborate as to when they would be released.

“We expect to have movies derived from that universe,” Horn said.

J.J. Abrams will direct “Star Wars: Episode VII” from a script by Michael Arndt. Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kimburg are working on scripts for the “Star Wars” spinoff films.

George Lucas’ first six “Star Wars” films grossed $4.4 billion globally and billions more from TV shows, videogames, theme park rides and merchandise.

It took George Lucas three years from the release of Phantom Menace to give us the dreadful Attack of the Clones, so taking more time certainly doesn't guarantee a better product. But I do share everyone's hope that we will get quality along with the quantity.

Well just have to wait and see if disney can keep the same craftsmanship going that George Lucas had. I believe disney will do a great job but will they change or alter anything is the big question.

I do worry they may be taking on too much. But you have a writing team and separate director this time around. Lucas wore both hats last time. Also, Disney should be able to put extra resources into ILM so they don't get over worked trying to make this many movies on top of each other. If anyone other than Disney were trying this I'd say they were trying to bite off too much.

Marvel is on a two-movie-per-year schedule:
2013: Iron Man 3; Thor 2
2014: Cap'n 2; Guardians of the Galaxy
2015: Avengers 2; Ant-man (or other Phase III movie)

So, Marvel will have 6 movies out in the next 3 years. Why is Disney/Lucasfilm considered moving too fast?

The key is to do it just like Marvel does. You don't have one creative team on each movie. Joss Whedon has 3 years to prepare Avengers 2, while having little to do with the 4 movies in between.

While Abrams is prepping Episode VII, you have another writer/director doing Episode VIII. Simple as that.

If the last three movies had the George Lucas craftsmanship that you're referring to then I hope Disney doesn't have it. They had some good parts but overall they were mediocre at best and that's coming from someone that loves Star Wars, grew up playing Star Wars, had every Star Wars toy ever produced, etc.

Lots of special effects alone doesn't make a good movie.

When writing these stories I just hope they remeber that Han does shoot first and ewoks may eat you.

By that I mean, let some of the characters have a touch of gray, not good guys are good and bad guys are always bad.

See I was never a huge Star Wars fame so maybe disney will turn it around for me

You just hit on my worry. I think Abrams is being tapped to do the whole trilogy. Same with the writers. I have nothing to say they are not. I think they got a good team but trying to pump out a movie every two years is going to be cutting it close even if the general outline for the whole trilogy is done.

And it became evident that selling volume of crappy product was really the only point to the "prequels"...

It would be tough to hold up that standard. When the bar is set on the ground it's impossible to come in below it...but I guess you could conceivably trip on it.

The special effects, frankly, were trumped by The Matrix two months before the phantom movie opened...ILM lost its corner on the "awesome" market just as Lucas lost his ability to shoot a decent scene (if he ever really had it)

My only concern is that Disney will make it more *campy* than what Lucas did.

I really hope that these films will reenergize the franchise and return to the original Star Wars format. Cute, soft, cuddly and bumbling characters need to go far, far away…

I'm telling you right now no way Abrahms does all three on that timeline. He took FOUR years to do the Star Trek sequel because he wanted it just right and wanted to do Super 8 in between. These movies do take about 3 years production to do them right. If there's a SW VIII in 2017, it won't be Abrahms directing it.

That's understandable I've just never been a huge fan of the actual Star Wars movies saw the first two and and really watched any of the others.
