Just Keep Swimming-March 31-April 7, 2013-Dining Review (updated 5/16)

:wave2:I just wanted to let all my fellow Waffle House lovers know that I thought of you while eating my hashbrowns for dinner tonight. As usual, the restaurant was grungy and the other customers one step above homeless, but it was delicious!

LOL .... they do have good food. But dang .... someone get some bleach out every now and again ......

I am so hungry after reading this. :lmao:

great reviews so far and it did look yummy.

Never tried a Waffle House and probably never will as I keep hearing how dirty they appear.

Haha. I know. These reviews make me so hungry, but I love them !! You should read the LIVE thread. Food porn 24/7, dude.

Yes, there seems to be a general consensus that Waffle House is a filthy place. Some are better than others.

For Breakfast we ate at Fairfax Fare.

I took that photo in September – don’t be fooled. This place had about 20 people in line for breakfast.

DH and I got breakfast here, the kids didn’t want anything. Well, DS ate my sausage out of my sandwich.

Egg and Cheese Muffin - with Bacon or Sausage $5.99

I got coffee and DH got some juice.

This is a good filling breakfast. Not great, but a good meal the provides energy and protein you need to tour the parks. I am not sure how many people know that this place serves breakfast, but they have these little sandwiches with egg, cheese and sausage or bacon. With a drink, it is a QS credit. You can also get a pastry, a yogurt and a drink for a QS credit.

For lunch we ate at 50’s Prime Time.

So we arrive and I went to the hostess stand and asked if we could check in early for our ADR. She said it was too early, but if we wanted to wait about 20-30 minutes we could just do that. So we decided to wait. She gave us a buzzer and before we even sat down, it was buzzing and they were calling our name. Well OK, then.

Our server was kinda funny, but he kept interrupting me as I was ordering and letting him know we wanted to split something. He did all of the antics and made the kids set the table. He was nice enough, but he didn’t listen. And he gave us some really bad park touring advice. He said to not worry about making rope drop, and then hit the parks later in the afternoon. DH and I were like ….wha? That might work OK in September, dude, but not during Spring Break. We couldn’t figure out if he was kidding or not. Anyway, he was OK.

We loved the décor though

They had these View Master thingys with the desserts inside.

I loved that.

We ordered onion rings as an appetizer, but we never got them because the waiter was too busy interrupting me when I was ordering. No, I’m not bitter ….LOL.

DD ordered Mac and Cheese

This is on the kids menu, but he got here an adult portion which was huge and she didn’t finish.

DH and I split the sampler

A Sampling of Mom's Favorite Recipes - Crispy-fried Chicken, Fork Tender Pot Roast, and Traditional Meatloaf with all the fixings $19.99

This had more food last time we got it, but it was still good. The fried chicken was my favorite.

DS got the fried chicken

Aunt Liz's Golden Fried Chicken - served with mashed potatoes, chicken gravy and southern greens $16.99

You can see here where our onion rings ended up. As a side item on DS’s plate. He shared but it wasn’t the same. Anyway, he really liked his chicken. I will say the mashed potatoes on my plate and his were cold and not good.

For dessert, DD got a kid’s make your own sundae thingy.

Which she enjoyed.

DH and I shared

Dad's Brownie Sundae - Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream, Hot Fudge, and Caramel topping $5.99

Which we loved. All-American fudgie brownie, vanilla ice cream and whipped cream goodness.

And DS got a root beer float.

Which he enjoyed.

In short, we enjoyed it, but it wasn’t as good as the last time we went. We liked our server much better that time. We would go back, because the kids like it and the food is pretty good wholesome grandma type food. And that is what it is supposed to be.

That breakfast sandwich from Fairfax Fare looks yummy. I can go for one right now.

Haven't been to 50's since '96 when they made me and my friend stand in the corner for not eating all of our veggies.:rotfl:

It was a good solid breakfast. Tasted good and it filled you up and gave you some energy. I would get that again.

They were doing all of that. Funny stuff. Our server was nice enough, he was just "off". I can't put my finger on it. I dunno.

We used to go to 50's until DS's favorite, the stack sandwich was taken off the lunch menu. He would eat that adult sized mac and cheese instead. Do you remember if the price of the kids' meal was doubled for the adult sized mac and cheese?

Thanks!

You know, I don't remember what they charged for that. I wanna say $8 or $9, but I am not sure. It was a huge portion. But it tasted OK. I helped her eat some. I think DH finished it off. She enjoyed it.

For dinner we went over to Captain Cooks at the Polynesian.

DS had a burger

DD got the kids chicken and french fries.

DH and I shared the Aloha Pork Sandwich

This pork sandwich is amazing !! A very interesting mix of flavors and textures. Sooo yummy !!!

The kids had vanilla ice cream for dessert

And DH and I had a Dole Whip.

I just love those Dole Whips !! Pineapple goodness. Yummo !!!

Great review!

Your Fairfax Fare experience was much better than the one we had in December. Both of us ordered the sausage/egg/cheese breakfast sandwich.... I can't say they tasted bad because they had absolutely no flavor at all. The muffin had some corn meal dusted on it and I added ketchup and the only things I could taste on the entire sandwich was ketchup and corn meal.

I have to agree that they don't have a lot of flavor and could have benefited from some salt and pepper, but our muffins seemed real fresh. They were a decent breakfast for us. I will also add that the egg and cheese and bacon combo tastes MUCH better on a croissant than an english muffin. We went by Starring Rolls, but the line was super long and we weren't in the mood for sweet pastries.

I'm always excited to see you writing another review, Susan!

I'm not sure what was going on at 50's but I would have been ticked (!!) if my onion rings had been messed up. They are so good.

Hey Thanks so much !! I'm glad you are following along !!

I know it. Those things are awesome. We kept waiting for them to come out to the table, but they never did. We checked the bill later and we weren't charged for them. So he just wasn't listening. Did I say that ?? :rotfl::rotfl2:

I had no idea it served breakfast. I will try it one day though.
Oh I would have said something about the onion rings. They are so good there.
Sorry your time there wasn’t as fun. Hopefully next it will be.
Captain Cook’s looked good.
