Magnetic dry erase board for door-why?

This is a silly ?, but packing light is important to me.... Plus, I'm a first time cruiser and am pretty clueless.

I've read that lots of people highly recommend packing a magnetic dry erase board for your cruise door so folks in your party can leave messages for you easily. Why would you need this if you have wave phones? Wouldn't it be easier to just text a message with the wave phone? We plan to have wave phones for everyone in the party.

I have a teenager and he does not always answer the phone; I am sure he is filtering dad. He also leaves the phone in the room when they are going swimming, playing basketball, riding the water ride, or pretty much anything that might endanger or lose the wave phone. The white board lets me leave message for him to see when he gets back to the room. Or he leaves message for me.

You are not supposed to use anything on the doors with adhesive as it damages the paint on the doors.

I didn't use ours I brought. I'd imagine if you have teens it is different, but for us-4 adults and 2 kids who were in the kids club and unable to wander alone, they were useless.
Also rather useless were bringing our own cups. I was picturing Dixie cup size cups and they are really the size of a small soft drink at a fast food place. We flew, so I could have saved LOTS of space leaving 4 big cups at home. DO bring the over the door hanging shoe thing. My husband and ILs thought I was nuts and I admittedly tossed it in last minute. That thing probably saved many minutes accumulated into hours of the infamous search for the little stuff you always willy nilly put down on the desk, in the bathroom, toss in a bag. I just said "Put stuff with no home in a pocket." and it was SO easy to just look in the clear pockets and find stuff quickly.

Really? I did not say I put post it on the doors. Jeeez. Where did I say that? Out of my 9 cruises, I've never put POST ITS on a door, thank you very much.

Wave phone holder bought on Etsy - used every day to hold phone/KTTW card.
Collapsible laundry hamper - convenient way to store dirty clothes since suitcases were under bed
Clothes pins - never used once
Large cups - never used at all
Flashlight - didn't need, but probably would bring again just in case
Kyss bag - used and loved
Outlet adapter - wouldn't fit in the outlets in the stateroom in the correct orientation, complete waste

We did not bring an over the door shoe holder or white board for the door and did not need/miss them. Everyone is different in what they find useful, but I would not worry about not bringing the white board.

What's a Kyss bag?

It's a bag with a chain and lock (google kyssbag). I used it as my carry on bag for the airport, and it was large enough to hold our swimming stuff for the first day on the ship. We boarded the dream at 11:30, and went right to the pool before our room was ready. Therefore we had our passports, purse with wallet, etc on us while we were on deck 11 enjoying the aquaduck and pools. I just locked it all up in the kyss bag to one of the chairs. It's very discreet, and it was nice peace of mind for me. I also used it at both the Altantis Aquaventure on Nassau and at the beach on CC for our stuff so it didn't disappear while we were in the water/beach.

That's brilliant! I'm going to order the pink one. We are doing discovery cove and aquatica before the cruise and it will come in very handy there too

I LOVE my kyss bag. Found out about it here on cc and use it at the beach/pool. I've never used a dry erase board although I have never brought one. Bringing one next cruise because there will be 3 families traveling together and don't know if there are wave phones on the ship (not DCL). Brought an over the door shoe thing and never used it. I don't bring extension cords or those multi-outlet adaptors/surge protectors or flashlights or cups(?!!) or pop-up hampers (although I like that one). I just try not too over pack. I figure we can survive a week without something. Two things I brought last cruise and used were disinfectant for the cabin and liquid hand soap (great for off the ship too).

Wave phones don't ring, they only vibrate, so you don't always hear them. We were always running back to the rooms for various reasons, so it was a central place to leave messages for each other. Used more when we travelled with relatives, but not so much when it was just our immediate family...

I don't think bahacca's comment about post its was intended to be critical. The OP is a first time cruiser and possibly doesn't know about the no adhesive policy so that is good information to provide. Also, because you didn't say where you put the post it notes, as a first time cruiser I would assume you put them on your door as well.

We didn't take one, but received one the second day as an FE gift. We put it up on our door and DW wrote a message stating we loved our room steward. And that message stayed up the entire week, we never had any need of writing anything else.

That said, we have young kids who don't roam the ship by themselves yet, and DW and I are pretty good about communicating and setting meeting places/times that we stick to. We maybe used the wave phones twice... other than that it was all just prearranging. As the kids get older, I could definitely see a benefit to the whiteboard.
