And it has points from 2012 and naturally the full allotment of points for the remaining years, when do you need to use the 2012 points before losing them?

What is the significance of the UY and the month? What should I watch out for?

Again you have been extremely helpful!!!

Well you need to know that you can only bank points for the first 8 months of your UY. So if it is a Feb UY, you have until the end of Sept to bank the 2013 points. If there are banked 2012 points (on a Feb contract) you would need to use them by the end of January 2014.

If you are talking Dec UY it changes a bit, as we are still in the Dec 2012 UY. You would have until The end of July 2013 to bank current Dec 2012 points. Or you could use them before the end of Nov 2013.

You could search this forum for the thread Understand Use Year. :)

It depends on the use month and if the points have been banked.

For example, if the contract has a use month of October, the 2012 points are good for vacations that occur between 10/1/2012 and 9/30/2013. You can bank them one use year ahead and if you did, the points would be good between 10/1/2013 and 9/30/2014. You must bank before the end of the 8th month following the start of your use year. So for an October use year, you'd have to bank 2012 points by May 31, 2013.

If you didn't bank, the 2012 points would expire on 9/30/2013. If banked, the 2012 points expire one year later, on 9/30/2014

Understanding Use Year

Good luck with your research.

What is the significance of the UY and the month? What should I watch out for?

you'd like to travel early in your UY (i have an oct UY and like to travel in nov/dec.)

you'd rather not travel late in your UY (i don't like to travel to wdw in july/aug/sept).

UY is mostly an issue if you need to cancel. if you constantly travel late in your UY, it makes it more of a risk that you will have to cancel and wind up losing pts as a result. (since you'd be canceling after your banking window closed.)

UY month has nothing to do with when you can call to book. nothing at all.

Basically, Use Year is the month that you recieve your yearly allotment of points. It really only matters because UY determines your banking deadline. If you typically travel at a certain time of year and you should have to cancel it would be best if that fell before your banking deadline.

For instance, I have a Feb UY, that's when the points are put into my account. My banking deadline is Sept 30 every year. Unused points must be banked into the next UY by then or they will expire Jan 31 unless you can find a way to use them. Banked points must be used by the end of the next UY they were banked into.

People with a Dec UY really just got their 2012 points a few months ago and will have to bank unused points by July 31. If you find a contract with 2012 points, hopefully they are already banked or you could have the sellers bank them for you in case the contract doesn't close before the deadline. If they are banked, it depends on the UY when they expire.

I think I've just confused myself here. :rotfl: Hopefully you will get a clearer answer from others.

Before you buy, you need to learn more about how DVC works. Otherwise, you may be disappointed when it doesn't work the way you hope it does.

Basically, points are good for one year. The year starts on the first day of your UY month and ends on the day before the start of your next UY. You can borrow points into the previous UY. You can bank into the next UY (but you have to do it before the last four months of your UY). You can only borrow one year's worth and you can only bank one year's worth. You can't bank them a second time.

If you forget to bank your points into the next UY and fail to use them, you lose them. If you still don't use them after you bank them, you lose them. If you borrow points into the previous UY and cancel the reservation, they will expire at the end of that year and you cannot bank them.

Borrowing and banking are not reversible.

One question still left after looking at lots of posts...say I buy contract with December use year no points from 2012 allotment, can I book home resort for this coming December based points I will have to use in December or do I need to have the points first to book?

After two cruises and Easter at WDW lots of chat about buying so glad so many have contributed lotsa good info here.

As long as the points will be available when the trip is planned, you can make home resort reservations 11 months out and other resorts at 7 months out.

What you need to know is that December 2013 points would be valid for travel that occurs between December 1, 2013 and November 30, 2014.

True. When you make that reservation you will be "borrowing" from your 2013 points.

Then in Dec you can actually borrow from your 2014 points to make another reservation.

Since I have a Feb UY and basically start the year with my points the whole concept of a Dec UY really screws with my head. :upsidedow

this is NOT accurate.

THIS is accurate.

if you call in jan 2013 to book dec 2013 with a dec UY, you have 3 UYs of points available to you:

1) banked dec 2012 pts
2) current dec 2013 pts (they are "current" based on dates of the stay - NOT based on when you call to book)
3) borrowed dec 2014 pts (you do NOT have to wait till your 2013 UY starts to borrow pts).

so again, UY has NOTHING to do with when you call to book. UY tells you 1) when your banking window closes and 2) when your pts are valid for stays.

even if your resale contract had no points coming till dec 2014, you could still call in jan 2013 to book dec 2013 with borrowed dec 2014 UY pts.

(the issue is that dec is super-popular with DVC owners so availability at this point is already getting limited for the smaller resorts.)

the issue with Dec UY is that a Nov 2013 trip (for example) would take place in your Dec 2012 UY. so in that case, you'd only have access to banked 2011 UY pts + current 2012 UY pts + borrowed 2013 UY pts.

people who don't throw out their ideas of calendar year get very confused with dec UYs if they travel earlier than december.

but traveling in december with a dec UY is not so bad since 1) you are in the same calendar year as UY and 2) you are traveling early in your UY, so if you need to cancel, you still have the option of banking current pts used in the reservation and have more time to figure out what to do with any banked/borrowed pts before they expire at the end of that UY.

Well, I did say that this confuses me....apparently a lot. :rotfl:

Thanks for cleaning up my mess. :)

I LOVE my December UY... have points left to use from 2011!! Whoopie!!:smokin:

Thanks y'all. Glad it is as I expected. Maybe Monday we will pull the trigger and line up a buy. The wife I suspect wants to do a big birthday with Mickey. Our pet street is Mickey but I suspect a week at the ranch will not cut it. Lol. We may end up going aback in June for our anniversary or to Land for a different view.
