I am in need of some advice on what to wear to an upcoming wedding. Here are the details:

  • cousin's wedding
  • evening wedding, formal but not black-tie or even black-tie invited
  • groomsmen, including DH who is the best man and DS, will be in tuxes, as will both fathers
  • bridesmaids are wearing floor-length gowns
  • ETA - DD is a bridesmaid (not sure how this got left off - it was in my post when I first typed it, but must have gotten lost when I edited!)
  • mother of the bride is wearing floor-length
  • I am doing a reading but am not a bridesmaid
  • not sure what other women are wearing

Normally I would wear a formal, but not floor-length, dress if invited to an evening wedding. I found a floor-length dress formal dress that I love, but I'm not sure if it would be "too much." I know that often the bridal party is more dressed up than guests, so I'm just not sure what to do.

As for the dress I found, this is it, but in navy blue:

I think that dress is exactly right. What color is the bridesmaid dresses? I would make sure that I didn't clash NOR exactly match their colors. The BMs should be dressier so it works.

It's lovely!

I just realized I misread your post. So, I'm changing my vote to "it's perfect"!

It will make for some great pics with your DH and DS in tuxes!!

I agree ^^^^ Your DH is gonna be in a tux and except for the ceremony you'll have tons of photo ops all dressed up together....how many chances do you get for that? What month are they getting married though? I don't know if I'd go with navy for spring/summer? One of my favorite dress websites is modcloth.com.

Thanks, the colors will definitely work well together. I was really careful to not pick the same color or anything that would clash with the bridesmaids or the bride's mom. Since I also didn't want anything even close to white, nor did I want black, I was somewhat limited in my color choices. Luckily, I love navy!

Thanks for the link - there are some really adorable dresses there, and some cute swimsuits, too. I've always thought of navy as a summer color - it's so interesting to me to hear that others don't always see things the same!

You're welcome...actually, there's a retro bathing suit I have "on hold" with them. I love all their styles. Your dress is beautiful. For some reason, your posting reminded me of this joke:

A couple was getting married, and it was only three days before the wedding. The bride calls her mother with some bad news. “Mom,” she says, “I just found out that my fiance’s mother has bought the exact same dress as you to wear to the wedding.”
The bride’s mother thinks for a minute. “Don’t worry,” she tells her daughter. “I’ll just go and buy another dress to wear to the ceremony.”
“But mother,” says the bride, “that dress cost a fortune. What will you do with it? It’s such a waste not to use it.”
“Who said I won’t use it?” her mother asked.
“I’ll just wear it to the rehearsal dinner.”
