Another possible drowning - Disney Fantasy ******UPDATE

I just heard that a boy was taken off the ship and sent off by an ambulance. He's around 9 or 10 yrs old. The parents were paged and they all left in their bathing suits. They apparently have 3 kids in total I think. Anyway, They were doing CPR on him for a while.

This freaks me out, considering the tragedy that just happened at Pop Century a few weeks back when the 13 yr old boy died.

I read this on another thread, in case your wondering.

Prayers for that little boy and the family. I cannot imagine what they're going thru. It breaks my heart.

*******UPDATE as of Easter Sunday morning: The child is now in stable condition. Great news! But lets continue to keep the boy in our prayers so that he makes a full recovery.

Someone who was at the pool had posted that the parents were not at the pool with him but came running over as they were working CPR on him. The parents nearly fainted. I seriously cannot imagine what theyre all going thru right now. I hope to god that little boy pulls thru. So tragic.

Are children that young allowed to swim without one of their parents?

It would be horrifying to be paged to the pool area and find out your child drowned.

Yup. Theyre allowed to swim without parents on the cruise ships and disney resorts. There's no way for the lifeguards or staff to track which kids have parents present, and which dont.

This is the 2nd drowning at disney in the month of March. They really need to be more strict at the disney pools. Not sure what they could do thou.

Apparently there's no lifeguard at the Fantasy pool but there is one at the slide. That makes no sense to me. So who cares if someone drowns, its more important that someone gets on the slide safely??? I really dont understand.

I think the slide lifeguard is to make sure the the kids wait to go down til the area is cleared. Because otherwise they would just go in and pile on top of one another. Yes this could be very dangerous if people got on the slide too close together.



This is so tragic! Seriously though, the PARENTS need to be more strict and watch over their kids more closely. Just because it's Disney and a family cruise doesn't mean there's not natural dangers. Unless he was in the kids club at the time, the parents should have been watching him, especially at the pool. I really hope this kid pulls through! I can't imagine being anywhere near this.

I'm not really sure how Disney could be 'more strict' at their pools. They provide lifeguards, not much else they can do. Perhaps parents need to be around.
It's a very sad thing to have something like this happen. It's awful. I can't imagine what that poor family is going through. But, sometimes, accidents happen. They are no one's fault....they just happen.

I actually get why they stand at the slide, i was just speaking out of frustration. It doesnt make sense to me as to why they'd only have someone monitor the slide and not the pool. I know its dangerous to have kids pile up on one another, but wouldnt it make a heck of a lot more sense if someone was actually watching the pool at the bottom of the slide? cause then they'd be able to watch the ENTIRE pool at the same time!

I agree. I hope these two cases are an eye opener for ALL parents at disney, and everywhere else. Even thou you think your kid is a good swimmer, even if he's older like the 13 yr old and the 9 yr old, you just never know what can happen if you leave them alone. Be careful.

Do you mean the person at the top of the slide should stand at the bottom instead? Not sure how they'd be able to direct traffic on the slide then. Also I don't think they could watch both. 2 would be helpful but on the ships there is limited staff (they have to sleep there so limited room).

I hear ya. I just wish there was something more they could do to prevent future tragedies from happening. But your right thou, parents need to be around more I suppose.

Yeah I don't know what they could do either. I mean the only way to prevent drownings 100% would be to not have pools...

Oh yes I agree! Parents need to be more responsible and not leave kids alone to swim.

While on vacation, its just my son and I. Granted he just turned 13, but I still watch him like a hawk!!! When he swims, I swim! Im extra careful on vacation because well, you just never know. Anything can happen.

Parents need to be the utmost responsible people/person for their children. You can't just leave them at any pool anywhere at 9 or 10. Not really Disney related at all.

I saw that post. Just heartbreaking. Praying for the boy and his family.

I use to be a trauma volunteer, called to scenes, hospitals by police, fire, er staff, etc. My last call was devastating for me that I had to stop. It was a backyard drowning. The girl was 8. Parents said she could swim. They were having a BBQ, just their family. The mom was inside doing the dishes the window looking right out at the pool, feeding the smaller daughter, the dad was at the grill - right next to the pool, the oldest daughter by herself in the shallow end of the pool. And she drowned. I stayed at the home with the sister, playing with her, distracting her as their parents left to the hospital. The 6 year old sister took me to her room to play, she shared with her older sister. She looked up at me and asked me "Is sissy coming home? I don't think she's coming home."

It was shattering to walk right into their nightmare, seeing everything just as it was. Steaks, juice, towels, lights on the pool. At the time my daughter was 8 too. When the parents came home, they told their child and the crying was something I'll never forget. I was also helping family members, aunts, uncles, grandparents.

I did many calls, suicides, accident sites, even was with an elderly wife at the bedside when her husband passed in the hospital. But this one devastated me. All I could think about was my daughter and I cried for weeks.

this is so sad! I seem to remember a set of rules posted by the pools on the Magic and Wonder that said kids under 14 have to be supervised in the pools. If the parents were not there that is their fault. If you want Lifeguards on the pools 24/7 expect the price of the cruise to go up because they would need even more crew to do so. Not Disney's fault solidly the parents fault. Not only that boy's parents but the parents of the other kids that were jumping in the pool. Again if I remember correctly it says no jumping or diving into the pools. Same reason.

So very true! When I was between 1st and 2nd grade, I was in the same position. While floating around at a lake with a swimming beach, two men who were playing tag along the beach tripped over me and ended up sitting on top of me. Luckily, my father noticed that I had disappeared and rushed to the water to pull me out.

Were it not for his attentiveness, I wouldn't be 68 now. (P.S. - That rather put me off water sports for good!)

The DIS never disappoints. Posters enjoy kicking a person when they are down...then pile on. It makes me sick.
