Edge vs. Vibe for 14 year old

We are taking a cruise to Alaska on the Disney Wonder this July.

Our DD is 14. On the Disney website, I noticed that 14 year olds can go in either Vibe or Edge. Have any of your kids spent time in these clubs? Are they really very different? Would my DD be able to spend time in both clubs or would she have to pick one to stay in? Are Vibe and Edge really that different from each other in terms of acitivities?

Vibe hands down is better then edge more fun better facilities all around better.

Hi we just came from the fantasy with a very shy 14DD we had her try first the edge open house and she made friends there. The girls are younger and she liked it better. She is also not into boys yet and didn't want to be around boys that were a lot older. But it's really about how your daughter is.

It will depend on your DD. They can't go back and forth endlessly, but they will let them try both out before she decides. My DD stuck with the Edge on the Fantasy. She had just turned 14 and wasn't interested in the High School scene, though the Vibe looks awesome. She will still be 14 when we go in 10 days. Not sure what she will do, but it is only 4 days. I'm guessing she will get her last bit of time in the Edge before she doesn't have a choice.

If you check out the Dis Meet for your cruise, you can get an idea of the ages of the other kids going. I suggest she get in touch with others kids her age beforehand. This will also help her decide. HTH

DD14 is really not into boys yet. She enjoys group activities, crafts, music, theater, science, learning new things etc.

From what I've read, it seems like there are more organized activities in Edge and more free time in Vibe. Is that correct?

Also, on the Alaska cruises, do they have a naturalist give talks to the kids or have other types of activities related to the natural sites that the kids are seeing on the cruise?

Can kids attend the talks that are given by the naturalist on board or are these talks restricted to adults?

Just a note for others...most cruises this is not allowed. Yes it happens occasionally, but most of the time the kids are required to choose one or the other for the duration of the cruise.

Really? I know it's not allowed in Oceaneers club/lab, but the cast members had no problem with it in the edge & vibe. I had no idea...

Actually, 3-12 yr olds are allowed in both the Club and the Lab and they do go between the 2 regularly, particularly on the newer ships that have a easier connector but even on the classic ships all they have to do is ask a CM to escort them to the other location.

If choosing between Club/Lab and Edge or Edge and Vibe, most kids are asked to make a choice. They are allowed to check out both spaces, but not usually allowed back-and-forth for the duration of the cruise. If there aren't many kids on a particular cruise, or not many of the tween/teen age groups, they may be allowed to utilize both but it's not a good idea to board the ship expecting that to be allowed.

What about my 12 year old daughter. Can she participate in both the oceaneers club and the Edge club? Or will she have to choose one or the other.
She was hoping to still do a few activities in the younger areas with her siblings but still able to be with the Tweens as well.

As noted by PP, any child in the "cross-over" age groups will, in most cases, told to try out one location before going to the other. But, generally, will have to choose one or the other. SOMETIMES, if one of the clubs involved is not particularly full, DCL will allow back and forth privileges. But don't count on it.

We are just off the 3/16 fantasy western and the 13 year old boy in our party was allowed in both edge and vibe all week AND his 11 year old sister did several activities at the Oceaneer lab even though she was not registered there (and it was not open house hours).

The club rules seemed pretty flexible, even on our sold out sailing.

That is correct. I went in 2011. However, there were some activities during the time I went on my Alaska Cruise. For the naturalist, I don't remember going (I was 16 at the time).

It'll depend on your daughter. If she's not in high school yet, I would reccomend Edge. Talk to the counselors first.

They gave our 12 year old a wrist-band to wear only if she decided she wanted to go with her 9 year old brother to the Lab - she decided to stick with the Edge, but it was nice to have both options.

Last August on the Dream, DS then 11 started at lab. But on day 2 he wanted to go to edge. It was a 5n so he had extra time. He kept the wristband until the last night in case he wanted to go back to lab, but never did. He did not need to take it out to go to edge.

This last February on the wonder, now 12, he went straight to edge. He was given a paper wristband to wear. But there were other kids his age with bothe wristbands on. Note that this was during KSF around presidents weekend and the ship was full of kids. They said over 1100.

On the Wonder, my boys preferred the Vibe over the Edge (they were 13 and 14 (turned 15 on the cruise) at the time). The counselors let the younger one go to the Vibe so they could hang together but they did ask him to check out the Edge first. They have a list of all the kids onboard by age so after he checked out the Edge and decided he'd rather spend time in Vibe with his brother, the CM marked him as a Viber.

I will say that on the Wonder, the Edge space is not nearly as cool as the Edge space is on the Magic (unless they've done something to it since June 2011). My boys both loved Ocean Quest space on the Magic (now Edge) and were disappointed to see how different it was on the Wonder - it's partly why our younger son chose the Vibe.

My boys enjoyed hanging out in the Vibe as there was plenty to do even if there weren't "organized" activities - there was always someone there to play cards, do puzzles, play video games (guitar hero, mario kart, etc.) - don't kid yourself if you think teenage boys aren't as interested in video games as tween boys are...

Plus there were "out and about" activities that they could participate in - not sure if they still have that program or not, but at that age they had it for 10 - 14 year olds so the boys would participate - they did ball games on the sports deck and even had a swim party after hours at the Mickey pool.

Anyway, since you'll be on the Wonder, I'd have her check out both spaces before deciding - and talk with the counselors. It's important to go to their "get acquainted" time on the first night - I know for the Vibe, that's when they 'vote' on their activities for the week.

My DS will be 14 on our next cruise and it's great he'll be able to try them both and see which one he prefers. As he is now, sometimes he prefers to hanging around youngest kids, sometimes not. It's a great option for that age group and they'll feel super special because of it.
