Special accommodations for a guest who expects to make a lot of noise at night?

I don't think anyone should have to miss out on staying onsite because they are unfortunate enough to be inflicted with a medical condition. Honestly all OP should be expected to do is take steps to try to prevent an episode.

I agree with you! But the OP has stated that in the past they notified the front desk, and were not given much help. The best thing is for them to take the steps that they can--such as booking Wilderness Cabin, to help ease their own mind, as well as to not end up irritating other guests who may be trying to sleep a few feet away.

The OP needs to do what they can. Unfortunately it is not practical to expect Disney to leave rooms empty around them as a buffer zone. And depending on the time of year may not be at all possible.

This may approach the line of TMI and for that I apologize, but we are cementing out plans for a return to wdw and I'm getting a little anxious about a problem I kind of expect to have with the resort.

I experience night-terrors most nights and the resulting noise can be very traumatic for people in a 50 to 100' radius. This happened one night last year during our stay at POR out of a 6 night vacation but we are staying 9 nights this time and I'm really dreading this.

Would it be wise to let the resort staff know that this might occur? Can I hope to find a room on the end of a building?

I do usually bring it up upon check in but they rarely take me seriously. As it happens (I'm told this) I often do quite a bit of screaming; even worse, I make exclamations in several different voices and even speak in different languages. I don't mean I'm possessed, they are languages I personally know. Be that as it may, wild and terrified screaming in Japanese, Urdu, Korean, Bengali, and/or English (of course) can be quite upsetting to someone who is not expecting it.

I'm thinking of bringing a recording of a particularly shrill 'event' to convey the complexity of the situation to the Cast Member at check in. Or should I try to make the resort aware of this before we arrive?

I really don't know how much accommodation I can expect but it would be really nice to make it through the week without the police showing up. That was a real bummer.

Sounds like something along the lines of Tourette's which my husband's former co-worker had. My husband would be sitting at his desk and all of a sudden here "ribbit" or "gork" or whatever. Not under his control.

Now, if I were in the room next to you, I would appreciate you personally coming over to me, introducing yourself and explaining your condition. And if I'm not there when you needed to do that, call and leave a message on my room phone. Talk to me. Don't leave it up to Disney to do the "dirty work". Be a human being like I should be. We can work it out. I would know what you are going through, you would know what I would be going through. Simple.

I used to live with a boyfriend who has these, his dr had him on Xanax which did help. I definately would go with stand alone accomodations. What was not in the op's original post was if theirs are violent or not. I actually ended up stabbed (only in the hand) and the police called during one. I'm not trying to be rude and by all accounts feel everyone should be entitled to a nice vacation. I do however feel that people need to try their best to handle their conditions and if they pose a threat to other people maybe somewhere quieter and less populated would be better.

I don't think Disney should provide a buffer zone if its a busy time they are first and foremost a business. I do think the OP may benefit from letting everyone that may be involved ahead of time what the issue may be. Just because last time it didn't help doesn't mean this time it won't. This is a medical condition that no one can control. I don't think that means that they HAVE to stay in a secluded room. Its unfortunate that people have a hard time having compassionate on others regardless of the severity of the medical condition.

OP I hope you are able to have a stress free vacation!

OKW has studios as well as 1,2 & 3 bedrooms - so it would be cheaper than either FW cabins or TH (at SSR).

plus if he mentions to the front desk they can block out the 1-bedroom next to him - unless the resort is full. plus the studios are on the ends generally - few are not - but again front desk knows this and will give him a end studio.

then it would only be the rooms under him that could be a problem.

now OKW has steps - so you have to be able to go up and down steps.

plus you can rent a reservation thru a DVC member or broker and save you some money.

would recommend offsite house before fw cabins or th - offsite house is cheaper.

be sure that the front desk manager knows your problem and contacts the security - so hopefully the police will NOT be called this time.

that had to hurt!

guess mind aren't so bad at all - they just wake me up not the whole neighborhood.
so sorry:grouphug::cheer2:pixiedust:

It has nothing to do with not being compassionate. It has to do with being practical, and OP doing what THEY can to make their vacation as stress free as they can. Judging by their past experience, they can't rely on Disney, and shouldn't bank on it for future trips. Being pro-active is better than waiting and seeing what Disney may or may not be able to do.

If the police showed up last time you stayed on Disney property, expect it to happen again if you experience another episode on vacation. Even if you have a corner or end room, you'll still have neighbors on one side and behind you, in addition to passers-by at any given time. Someone hearing an adult screaming in the middle of the night is likely to call 9-11 out of concern for your safety and the safety of others. The first thought is not going to be that it's a harmless medical condition, so let's just be compassionate and ignore it. Telling your next door resort neighbors is not likely to help in most cases. They will probably ask to be moved. It's not out of unkindness. People don't like the prospect of being bothered in the middle of the night. As others have suggested, a stand-alone unit, like the cabins, is probably your best option. I'm sympathetic to your condition. It can't be easy for you or your friends and family. As others have stated, it's really up to you to be pro-active and figure out ways to mitigate your impact on fellow vacationers. You will have a much more enjoyable trip if you don't have to worry about a potential visit from local law enforcement every night. I hope you find a way to have a truly magical trip. :goodvibes

As an adult who suffers from possible PTSD and night terrors , I want to first say I completely ephathize with your situation and though some others have had less than favorable responses I truly admire you for being so honest.
*hugs*

Though mine are not often as severe..it is a very real condition that medication cannot fix in some , nor should it need to resort to that.

I feel you have the right to enjoy your vacation just as much as anyone else and by seeking advice and looking ahead are actively trying to make those around you more comfortable is to be respected. I would call the hotel directly and ask to speak to a manager to document your requests and concerns. Perhaps they can accomodate a corner room as mentioned or if you decide to stay off site to be more comfortable for you perhaps they can offer some assistance.

Quite frankly I don't have children by choice and though I have often been disturbed by them , NEVER would I complain just because I don't like it. It's a part of staying somewhere public. And I personally would not want to feel singled out because of something completely out of my control.

I wish you nothing but a wonderful vacation :grouphug:

There is no calling any Disney hotel directly, regardless of what number you call.

You will end up at a call center. The same goes for any number you call on your in-room phone. They all go to a call center.

My concern is that it might not be harmless. I also find it odd that the op has not posted again on this subject. Hope this isn't someone trying to be funny and using a serious and sometimes very dangerous disorder to do so. Also if you notice everyone's mind went to the same place with the post title and first sentence. Just wondering how intentional this was.

I know you want to stay onsite, I know you think it's a more magical experience. But you tried it and it didn't work.

Trust me OP when I say I have much sympathy and empathy for you. I have Crohn's Disease, a chronic condition that has shaped much of my life and has forced me to alter plans in a way that I really didn't want to.

But there are so many issues with attempting to stay onsite again. Maxiesmom is right, there's little to no chance Disney could simply block out each room that borders yours. While OKW may have been a decent option at one time, since the villas were refurbished with vinyl flooring instead of carpet, there have been LOTS of complaints about how much sound carries.

And while letting the front desk know of your condition would be the polite thing to do. It's not going to help when one of your neighbors panics at the sound of your screaming and calls A) the police or B) the "front desk." Like a PP mentioned, calling the "front desk" from a Disney room doesn't get you to the actual front desk, your call goes to a call center off Disney property. So even if the real front desk knows of your issue, the call center wouldn't and would likely set the security/police wheels in motion.

We stayed in a Windsor Hills house last year and really liked it. Did we want to stay onsite? Yep, we like the Disney "magic" in its resorts. But for that trip (an extended family trip with some members of the family more cash strapped than others), there was no denying the extra space and vastly lower cost of the rental home was the right choice for us.The circumstances dictated our accommodations.

Save yourself the stress of trying to solve an impossible situation in the hotel. And once you've got your symptoms more under control, revisit the idea of staying in a hotel. Have a good trip!

 I can see what a worry this is for you traveling. It must be really stressful worrying if you'll have police visiting you in the middle of the night.

I agree with the suggestion of a Ft Wilderness cabin, maybe it would ease your stress being a bit separated from others, you could ask for an end unit.

Treehouse villas are fine for those who can afford them $$$$. :faint: I know they're out of my price range, not a practical solution for most ;)

An off site vacay home rental is another option, but I get the feeling that like most of us you want to be in the middle of the :wizard: being on site.

I hope you can find a solution you will feel comfortable with, and enjoy your vacay! :goodvibes

I am not - did you see the first replies - take about negative. He may have left the Dis forever - hope not - he has a problem - so quit making the guy feel bad.
My opinion.

these are some nice houses that rent about the same as a moderate - the further away the cheaper the rental price.

I am not trying to make anyone feel bad. I'm sure some people don't realize what night terrors are. I do I lived through them. For those that don't.They are very realistic nightmares. The person doesn't usually even remember having them. They will scream and thrash and yes in some cases become violent. But they're are ways of treating them. Some drugs and even hypnosis and acupuncture have proven very successful. I'm not saying don't go on vacation. I'm saying rent a house or condo and consider other people not just yourself. Mainly though you should get help for you and your family. I'm still not sure this is for real.

It would be nice if the Op came back and responded to all of the posts in the last day. A little feedback might prove helpful in giving the OP advice that he would find the most helpful. :confused3 My eyelid always starts twitching when a thread opens up with rather dramatic content, and then the OP isn't heard from again.

:thumbsup2

I've been an apartment/condo renter my whole adult life, and I've heard quite a bit from neighbors. I always appreciated knowing what was happening rather than being mystified.

I think it was a different person who mentioned police being called. At least I only read about police in a post by someone whose ex got terrors, stabbed her in the hand once, and on that occasion police were called. I don't think I read police in the OPs post.

OKW wouldn't be appropriate; you can hear everything in those villas.

If I were in such a position I would definitely want to rent a house.

Thank you for the great replies (even the critical ones). I promise I'm not trolling or trying to have a laugh about this. I do have a weird sort of humor about it but I didn't intend the title to be taken as a joke.

What I suppose I really needed was a sounding board to get a sense of just how much is too much to ask of Disney.

To answer some questions that have come up...
I'm a guy. Married, 2 cool kids. Sleep issues since a rather unpleasant event a decade or so ago(it's not tourettes). No it's not the fun kind of TMI, sorry.

Yes, my kids fully get the whole experience. It sucks but we deal with it openly and it's not the traumatic experience you might imagine. In fairness I think I have suffered greater mental anguish changing their diapers.

The night-terrors happen most nights but most times it's just a choked scream that may only wake myself up. When it's not ... well, it's pretty bad. From an outside perspective it would be a really hard thing to listen to.

Medication is an option but it would involve taking a hypnotic like Ambien before bed then waking up 5 hours later to take a tranquilizer (like Klonopin) otherwise the Ambien wears off enough by morning and I actually am more likely to have an episode. I have no issues with RX therapy, best improvements to my quality of life have come out of a bottle of some sort, but there's such a thing as too much.

Campgrounds (even in a cabin) are actually a really bad idea. It's counter intuitive really. You think more space between you and others would be a good thing. But it's open space and sound travels really easy out in the open.

To make one point a little clearer. The staff at POR are always awesome. I wasn't complaining that they didn't take me seriously only that it's a little much for a CM to take in and the default human reaction seems to default to some version of, "Oh don't worry about it, you'll be fine." Which I will be fine, I've done this before and I'm always fine. Someone in the next room who is hearing what they think is a drug deal gone bad ... they may have a different opinion.

The thing is, if everything goes right we (my wife and I) can head off an episode and everything is copacetic. Maybe it's a sense of entitlement to want to stay at a resort, but I always couple it with a responsibility to do everything possible to prevent my problems from disturbing someone else's vacation.

But I'm not perfect and with a longer stay planned I'm getting worried. I'm at the point where I will probably rent a portable sound booth (there is a professional audio-video rental in orlando) and set it up in the room. It is still cheaper than renting a house.

Or if there are any other practical suggestions I would love to hear them.

I'm sorry Minnie Mum. I work as a structural artist and I happened to wake up this morning with a head of steam so I spent the whole day in my machine shop. I have a rule that if I get 3 hours of uninterrupted work done I turn off my computers and just keep at it because it's obviously going to be a productive day. Today I was down in the dungeon for 16 hours or so with breaks only for eating and fist-bumping my kids when they got home from school.

Glad you were able to come back and provide everyone with your feedback. I hope you'll be able to find a workable solution for you and your family.
