Special accommodations for a guest who expects to make a lot of noise at night?

This may approach the line of TMI and for that I apologize, but we are cementing out plans for a return to wdw and I'm getting a little anxious about a problem I kind of expect to have with the resort.

I experience night-terrors most nights and the resulting noise can be very traumatic for people in a 50 to 100' radius. This happened one night last year during our stay at POR out of a 6 night vacation but we are staying 9 nights this time and I'm really dreading this.

Would it be wise to let the resort staff know that this might occur? Can I hope to find a room on the end of a building?

I do usually bring it up upon check in but they rarely take me seriously. As it happens (I'm told this) I often do quite a bit of screaming; even worse, I make exclamations in several different voices and even speak in different languages. I don't mean I'm possessed, they are languages I personally know. Be that as it may, wild and terrified screaming in Japanese, Urdu, Korean, Bengali, and/or English (of course) can be quite upsetting to someone who is not expecting it.

I'm thinking of bringing a recording of a particularly shrill 'event' to convey the complexity of the situation to the Cast Member at check in. Or should I try to make the resort aware of this before we arrive?

I really don't know how much accommodation I can expect but it would be really nice to make it through the week without the police showing up. That was a real bummer.

If you know it can be "traumatic" for those next door & further, then it is the height of an entitled attitude to stay at a public hotel. :(
A heads-up to the desk staff doesn't begin to cover it.

So she or he (sorry didn't look at your profile) never gets to stay at a hotel? What about screaming babies?

Babies may be annoying, but aren't traumatic. Don't know about "never".

OP, has your therapist not talked to you about ways to handle these situations? I assume that if you have these occurrances on a regular basis that you are in treatment. Perhaps your doctor would be willing to prescribe a medication that would enable you to sleep through the night while on vacation. And not traumatize your neighbouring guests.

I guess I'm not sure what the resort could actually do for you, except maybe note it in your reservation so that if someone calls security and complains they know beforehand that you have night terrors and that's why someone is screaming in your room. Unless they have soundproof rooms I don't know about!

If you do get the night terrors, do they go on all night or just for a few seconds before someone wakes you up (or you wake yourself up?) Are you sharing a room with someone else that could help you out if there is a problem?

Sorry you have to stress about this...

I wonder if you could have it noted on your reservation so that when the assign your room the hotel can attempt to leave the room next to yours (maybe even over or under) unoccupied.

One solution might be to pick one of the many options in orlando area to rent a standalone townhouse or even house

That was actually my thought. Is there a sleeping pill that might help you get through the night without an episode?

Have you considered the cabins at Fort Wilderness? You would have your own building.

have you consider offsite in a house - then you could be loud -

if you really want to stay in a hotel - then would ask for a back area room - these (unless peak season) are less in demand. Now the hotel might not let you because it means that housekeeping will have to go there too.

have you consider OKW - it is a DVC resort - it has condo - studio - but it has several building that are alone - here a map

http://www.wdwinfo.com/resortmaps/okwmap.htm

like 55, 11,40, 22 in your case

are you still in the military - then Shades of Green is a military resort at WDW.

you aren't the only one - but wake myself up before others - besides mind is a medical problem - your sounds like a real life problem.

sorry you are going thru this.

If your dr. can't do anything to quell it, the best thing you can do is get a rental in a home or something where you are not on top of other people.

Seriously, I am sympathetic to sleep disorders because I have serious insomnia bouts.

But think of these families that spend years saving for their big Disney vacation, only to be traumatized every night by someone screaming bloody murder next door in the middle of the night-- spending an hour trying to get their only toddler back to sleep because of it-- only for everyone to be cranky and tired the next day.

I feel for you and how it's a pain to find other accommodations but that's so not fair to do to people around you.

I don't get the advice for you to stay away from hotels altogether, especially since you don't have the night terrors every night - so you don't even know if it will be an issue.

I agree that if you can afford it, you may feel better in one of the cabins or even in a treehouse villa. We stayed at the THV and loved it! They are a bit more private than even the FW cabins. If you stay in a regular room, try for one on the top floor and on the side. That will lesson how many people can hear you.

Do your best to work around the situation and not intrude on other people, but in the end, you deserve a nice vacatioin too. :goodvibes

I have to agree. You have no way of knowing how booked your resort will be. And to expect them to leave a bunch of rooms around you unoccupied is pretty extreme, and may not be possible.

I really think you should look into a Fort Wilderness cabin. You will be in a separate unit, and less likely to bother anyone else. I think it is up to you to figure this out, and plan your vacation in a way that your screaming will impact as few people as possible, and not expect Disney to somehow fix it for you. I'm am very sorry you have to deal with such a scary thing!

My cousin has terrible night terrors too and he is on some type of medication for it. He no longer has these episodes at night, which were very terrifying for others around him. I'm not sure what you want the front desk to do, they can list it on your reservation but cannot ignore it if heard ( meaning even if it is listed they may still need to come and check up on the situation, make sure there is nothing really going on, not that these terrors are not real), more of a safety security thing.

agree - mind is generally relative to stress - so WDW might be a good place for you - now there is stress - but WDW is different.

that say if you fear something the more likely it is to happen.

I think the suggestion of a cabin in Fort Wilderness of a vacation house rental are good ones. I hope you find a solution that works for you :)

Agree with renting the cabin or house...my experience is, at least in values and moderates, that the walls are somewhat thin and you can hear things like toilets flushing in the next room. families in rooms next to yours, myself included, would be terrified to hear an adult screaming in the night. I would probably call 911 if I heard this.

I do not see how Disney can leave rooms empty next to yours, especially if the resort is sold out as they often are. The cabins or rental home is a great suggestion.

Good luck.
