Disney dining discounts ..TIW, AP, AAA, Disney Visa...ques and answers

been crunching numbers to see if purchasing the TIW makes sense for our trip during Thanksgiving this year...I currently have a premier AP..

have priced out which restaurants we plan on eating at (meals only, not alcohol) and come up with around $650.00.

is my math correct???

$650.00 food x 18% gratuity = $767.00 x 6.5% sales tax = $816.00 - $100.00 for TIW card grand total would be $716.00 so I would save $66.00???

know I will have some discounts with my AP, just trying to if it really makes sense to get the TIW?

Thanks :)

Bottom line is you need to spend $500 (if DVC or AP) in order to pay itself off. I don't see where you have added your 20% off in your calculations. You have taken off $100 though?!? The $100 should be added to your total, it's the added cost of purchasing the card. Then you take 20% off every bill you get. That's where the $500 comes in. Savings will cover the card purchase after $500 spent. So according to your total, you will save 20% off your $150 (650-500) or $30. That's your savings after recouping the $100 spent on the card. From this point on, you are saving money every time you use your card.
Hope that helps and doesn't confuse you more!

ETA - check out the breakdown of savings in post #3 of this thread!

thanks, I did miss taking out the discount...thought I had followed the math from post #3 :rotfl:

okay that makes more sense to me...guess I'll be saving money since we will be closer to $650...thanks for your help!

I have a technical question:), we will be using the TIW card for the first time next week:cool1: and I was just wandering if you have to tell the server (at a TS) when you arrive or just when you pay the bill that you are using the card ???

Thanks !

Whenever you want, either before or after when presented the bill.

Assuming you would have tipped 18% anyways you would save 20% of the $650 = $130 + 6.5% tax = $138.45 less $100 to purchase = $38.45.

I always get TiW because I have multiple trips. I have not really paid attention to AP discounts. I think many are just lunch.

I loved getting AP discount just about everywhere at DL last summer.

If it's $650 at restaurants that participate in TIW then that works. Just make sure you're not figuring the discount out with restaurants that don't participate. And of course make sure you look at the website to see the counter service places you can use it at!

For people with either AP or DVC discounts being possible, make sure you know exactly where those discounts are found and if they work for you. It's possible you could be dining exactly where you can get those discounts, and maybe that would work best. Doesn't work for me, but it's good to know!

this will be our only WDW trip this year but think getting it will make sense and are meeting friends too, so can share the discount with them!
DL does have lots of food discounts with the AP!

yes they are the restaurants on the plan! been double checking everything to make sure it will work out...as I said above will be sharing with other friends too, maybe I'll ask them to chip in on the TIW cost!
