BOG - anyone else hesitant about the menu??

I would love to try BOG (if I can get an ADR) for our November trip, but am hesitant because the menu is worrying me. I'm an adult and admittedly a picky eater. I am very content with a burger, fries, and shake at Sci-Fi or the pasta bowl from the POR food court. Has anyone else had similar worries about the BOG menu and been pleasantly surprised? Would love to hear what you ate!

No. It's a themed restaurant that sprung forth from "Beauty and the Beast", specifically the "Be Our Guest" song that features gourmet food. Do you really think that burgers and food court pasta would complete that theme? I'm sure you can find what you want at Cosmic Ray's. There is no rule that says that every new restaurant, no matter how popular, should cater to the fast food, cafeteria style eating.

They have "regular" type of food too. The cornish hen was basically roast chicken and the steak seems pretty regular too. I think there is something to order for all types of eaters.

I can understand where the concern comes from, but definitely don't miss out on the meal because of it!

The cornish hen is great, although very bony, it's a lot of cutting to get the meat off.

The pork dish was absolutely amazing, it was spiced, which I loved, but I'm sure you could get it without!

There's also always the kids menu to ask about, which will have less "odd" items. When we did the QS lunch at BOG I'll admit that both of us ordered off the kids menu because we didn't like the sound of the adult menu, stuff like Mickey meatloaf and a carved turkey sandwich.

Also just consider lunch, there's more "normal" options on it I guess?

I am SO looking forward to sampling the menu at BOG- we plan to go for both lunch and dinner. I love that they have an inpark restaurant at MK now that serves something other than the same ol' same ol'. And as some of the PPs have mentioned- I'm sure you can get the pork chop served without sauce, the cornish hen is just a minnie chicken, you could get the salmon with a different vegetable, or the steak without the herbed butter.

But if even this is too adventurous for you, the Plaza serves burgers.

Although it's not a huge menu, I thought that it looked like it had something for everyone. I would think that a steak and fries (pommes frites on the menu) would be pretty normal. If you just want the experience of going, maybe just order dessert or get something off the kid's menu. If you feel bad about taking an ADR for that, go during lunch hours.

Being a very picky eater myself, I always have to make sure I can get things plain. For lunch the steak sandwich was pretty much just steak and bread. Yum! It did have some leafy stuff on it but I scraped it off and it left no taste. At dinner I forgot to ask for butter sauce on the side of my steak but it was ok. It was just salty. Not too much else. The fries at lunch are just your regular Disney fries. At dinner they are more of a steak fry. Dont worry. I think you will be fine!! And the chocolate cupcake was really good. Hope you can get a ressie. The atmosphere is awesome!!

I've been to BOG for both lunch and dinner.

For lunch I had the Braised Pork, French Onion Soup, and Lemon - Raspberry Cream Puff. All were quite excellent and relatively simple.

For dinner, I had the French Onion Soup and Potato Leek Soup (both delicious, though I'd lean towards the Potato Leek), and the Thyme-scented Pork Rack Chop (was a little under-cooked for my tastes - would ask for well cooked).

The Pomme Frites were quite excellent, so I'm sure that the Grilled Strip Steak with Pomme Frites would be very good.

The lunch menu offers more traditional options, so that may be a better option than the TS dinner; additionally, the QS price difference will be noticeable. That way you can still experience the amazing atmosphere of BOG without the more eclectic dinner menu.

DH is a very picky eater and was nervous about the menu but I still made a reservation for dinner.

A few days before this reservation, we ended up trying lunch…he got the steak sandwich and fries…he just scraped off the greens…said it was really good. I am mildly picky….as long as they have a beef or poulty dish, I’m good to go but will get sauces on the side because that is usually where I have a problem….not liking a sauce. I got the turkey sandwich (without the mustard) and fries which were good. The turkey was real carved turkey not deli meat. DD6 got the kids turkey sandwich. She usually won’t eat sandwiches but she loved it…said the tomato on it really made the sandwich taste good. :lmao:

Because of our excellent experience with lunch, DH wasn’t as nervous about dinner. He had the steak which came with steak fries and said it was really good. He just pushed aside the greens that came with it…I think DD6 and I ate his veggies. I had the hen which just tastes like chicken, it’s just a really tiny chicken and the potatoes and veggies were good. DD6 had trouble picking something from the kids menu but I reminded her that she liked the turkey sandwich at lunch and the turkey meatloaf was just turkey….she actually liked it and ate most of it.

Since the other two meals were so good, we went for lunch a second time. DH got the steak again, DD6 got the turkey sandwich again but I got a salad and French Onion soup. The soup was better than I expected…it isn’t a beef broth based soup but more of a veggie based soup….it was still really good. DD6 had a few spoonfuls and liked it too.

I just want to add that the lunch fries (which look like the regular Disney fries) and the dinner steak fries had a unique flavor. :confused3 I am guessing it is from the oil they use to fry them. At first, we weren’t sure if we liked them but after a few bites, they were really good.

Those who are looking for a burger and fries are not going to find the burger at Be Our Guest.

I've only had the chicken (they call it a "hen" but it's just a small chicken) and it's a rather plain roast chicken with potatoes. It was good but bland. So I would say that nobody should expect fancy gourmet fare either. No idea about the steak but it looks pretty plain, ask for it without sauce.

I, too, have been real hesitant to eat here...I'm a little picky but my oldest DD is very picky. Even after looking at the menu, both my teen DD's wanted a dinner reservation here, so we did book a dinner for our upcoming trip in August - I hope it's worth it.

My main hesitation for trying BOG (aside from the near impossibility of getting an ADR) is that I'm a bit of a signature snob when it comes to restaurants with gourmet theming.

That being said, I love many of the non-signature dining experiences at WDW. I love many of the character breakfasts. I love 'Ohana and Kona. I love Via Napoli. And I really like 50's Prime Time. I'd like to try Biergarten, Hoop Dee Doo, Teppan Edo, Sanaa, and Boma.

But none of these restaurants are trying to be gourmet (their themes don't require it) and I don't go into these places expecting gourmet-style food. But if I go into a gourmet-themed place, then I do expect food of at least a nominal gourmet-esque quality. And I view BOG as a gourmet-themed place.

In that regard, my experience with gourmet-themed non-signatures at WDW has been one of disappointment. In order avoid disappointment, I've learned to stick with the signatures (which usually meet, and sometimes exceed, my expectations). This has conditioned me to base my frame of reference of gourmet style with signature quality. Given that frame of reference, I'm highly skeptical that I won't be disappointed with BOG.

I am in no way a 'gourmand', but I know good food when I taste it. I recently dined at Be Our Guest for dinner, with a party that consisted of three adults, a three year old, and a 14-year old girl. All loved their choices, which were grilled chicken for the 3-year-old, pork chop for the teen who loved it and she is very picky, and ratatouille, mussels, chicken, and salmon for the adults. Everything was we'll-prepared, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Can't wait to eat there again. I had the salmon and it was excellently prepared.

We are facing the same issues in July. We are really excited to see this restaurant, but my DH is a very picky eater. Even though we are going to be on the dining plan, he is planning on getting the French Onion Soup and paying out of pocket for it. He will probably get something at Cosmic Rays after.

I have been a bit hesitant about the menu at BOG. My husband and daughter are extremely picky. I know that myself and DS can find something to eat here because we are less picky and more open to trying different foods.

I plan to have DH & DD get the plain steak at dinner minus the vegetables. DD will also eat potato leek soup (go figure). They will also eat the desserts - Chocolate cupcake and the lemon cupcake.

I expect DS to order the Salmon. He loves it. I am thinking about the pork or sharing the salmon with DS. If I got the pork, I could give DD the baked mac & cheese. There are also rolls with butter, I know they will eat those.

DH keeps saying he will not like it. It drives me crazy when he says this because I just want him to try it because he might like it. I want to eat at Beasts Castle and get a picture with him. So I really want DH to be quiet and do it for me. So I guess the reason I have been hesitant is because DH says, He will not like it.

Good Luck! I say give it a try!

:goodvibes

isnt it sad that he made up his mind before even stepping foot in the place?

I have always told my kids-- to at least try a food before making a decision based on how it sounds.

when i showed them the menu-- many people poo poo'd about pomme frites ewww. until I showed them its French Fries.. (LOL)

I suppose this all might depend on your definition of gourmet. (or gourmet theming :confused3) Gourmet usually relates to those with a discriminating palate (probably the opposite of what Americans refer to as a "picky eater");a connoisser of fine food and drink involving high quality and skilled preparation. One might expect this at a signature restaurant.

I don't know why anyone would expect this at a regular TS restaurant. You would definitely be setting yourself up with unrealistic expectations. BOG is not a signature. It is not "gourmet-themed"(if there even is such a thing). It is French-inspired. Just like les Chefs de France is French (but hardly gourmet). I would be quite satisfied if this restaurant delivers what it advertises- rather basic everyday French styled cuisine that one might find at any neighbourhood bistro in France.

I would encourage you to go, and if you want substitutions or accommodations (sauces on the side), then ask for it. You could also try letting the server know that you're a meat & potatoes type person and see what s/he recommends.

DH is sort of a picky eater. He likes all kinds of things (Indian, Moroccan, Thai, etc) but he kind of has to be conned into trying it for the first time. Once he does, he's usually hooked. We have done very well both in the States & abroad putting our meal in the hands of servers/chefs. I'm not sure how this would go at Disney, but it might be worth a shot?
