Is there anything Disney gift cards do not cover?

Hi everyone! I have been saving gift cards over the last year to put on our shipboard account. I know this topic has been covered frequently, but I'm trying to make sure the gift cards cover everything. Can you use the cards for gratuities, alcohol purchases, shore excursions, Palo and so on? Is there anything they don't cover? Thanks for the help.

Anything that you can charge on you stateroom card will be covered, because you will put them on your account and they will appear as an OBC. You can also use them as a form of payment in the gift shops onboard, if you want to let your kids have a little fun shopping on a budget without having to give them charging privileges.

Actually, anything that is on your onboard account can be paid with gift cards. The gift cards are applied as a credit to the account. No way to select what things they will pay for.

You can put them on your account before you even get onboard. I had $2,000 on my account for our 7day cruise..paid for excursions, tips, store purchases..whatever.

How do you this? We just did our online check in today and didn't see an option to add? thanks! I'd feel better having it there instead of carrying tons of cards around with me until I could find a moment to get to the service desk.

I believe you would have to call DCL and have them do it for you. You could also wait until you get onboard and go to guest services desk and have them apply them all to your on board account

Also, one note here, you need to keep the gift cards that have been applied to your account until the end of your cruise. If there's any leftover credit it must be applied back to a gift card, you can't get cash.

Actually, I did have left over money after my last cruise due to a Bingo win...not a lot, but some... I just had them apply the leftover money as an additional tip to our room hostess because she was amazing..

I had to apply payments to my cruise itself through my TA and once the cruise was paid for in full then I called DCL directly to apply the rest to my shipboard account.

Last June on the Dream, we signed a slip and added the tip that way a couple of times and once we just gave him a couple of bucks. So if you sign the slip and add the tip that way then it is added to your onboard account that can be paid with gift cards.

And the room service delivery person(s) tend to be real quick about delivering and leaving, so it's a good idea to keep the cash handy to the door, so you can have it in hand when opening it.

We never purchased anything from room service with an upcharge either and were ALWAYS given the slip to sign. One night our wonderful dining server had 2 creme brulees sent up to our room and we had to sign for those also. I don't know what decides if they give you the slip to sign or not but we were always given the slip.

There are different deals people have found. I just use it as another way to save for the cruise. I buy one every month, with my groceries, to use for our onboard expenses.

I have read about the Target deal, but i also plan on having family members give my kids Disney gift cards for birthdays and special occasions. Then they will have their "own" money on the cruise and i won't say "I'm not paying for that!"

I just got off the Dream and used gift cards for almost everything. The only thing they wouldn't let me use the cards for is a future booking for another cruise. They charged the Amex we had on file.
