Official Castaway Cay 5K Thread

That's really true,isn't it?
It's all about the journey. :drive:
Those are the kind of thoughts that are great to read!:thumbsup2
You're right, that it would certainly be against everything that's Disney to make someone feel bad.
I guess it's time to work as hard on thinking positive as I do on walking...

Wish I could have all of you waiting at that finish line.........:cheer2:

We left WDW on the morning of the Princess 1/2 marathon to head to the ship for our cruise (Feb 24). At dinner that night we found out one of our tablemates ran the race that morning and then got onboard. She was quite tired and had to leave dinner early but she was very excited about the race!!

I'm looking at this in steps,so as not to feel overwhelmed by too much too soon.

The fact that I was able to start AND finish the Key West 5k, has led to my confidence that I can finish the CC 5k. Then, after a few more 5k's (thinking about the RunDisney food/wine festival 5k in November), I'm hoping I'll be able to walk a half marathon and since I've been reading so much about the Princess one,I think I might make that one my inaugural half marathon.I want to be able to finish it in a time that's not incredibly embarrassing.

Just not sure what year that will be in...but it's a goal....can't think of anything cooler than walking through WDW at night.......: characters cheering you on........:

if you're even one second over, the dreaded bus gets you. It's preferable to throw yourself off the bridge than suffer the embarrassment of a bus pick-up. So I've never had the guts to even try it.
<clip> Is it a kinder,gentler atmosphere?????

YES! Kinder, gentler and magical. I can tell you from personal experience with people I was coaching last year at the 5K's that I have seen Disney give golf cart rides to people struggling in the very back rides up the course a bit and drop them off again to give them a bit of a boost in getting to the end. When the route goes through Epcot they close part of an out and back down at a certain point giving the people in the very back of the back a shorter course to complete. Everyone gets to cross that finish line and have a medal put around their neck. :-) It's kinder, gentler and MUCH more supportive.

It is a little stricter with the Halfs because they are on the roads, but this is Disney, it's not about shaming the penguins. I've had friends who have been swept, and all of them have said that it was a supportive environment. Plus, when they stepped out of the van, there were people there to put a medal around their neck too. Though there are plenty of elites on the course setting records and winning cash prizes, runDisney is about getting out there and having fun, about trying your best and loving the journey. No worries about having to dive off a bridge.

I did the WDW half in January and then went back 4 weeks later for the Princess half! I'm not a "runner" but I trained for 6 mos and I'm so glad I did! My finish time wasn't great but it's all about the experience. I stopped numerous times for photo ops and potty breaks. ;)
Now I'm addicted to RunDisney and I'm going to DL in August to earn my Coast to Coast medal! I did the Castaway Cay 5k in January. No medal but it was still fun and I highly recommend it. No time limit. Lots of different ppl all going at their own pace. ;)

Thank-you very much for that info. Between you and that great Firefighter,I can honestly say my anxiety has been " swept away".
Being picked up and dropped off further down the course is beyond supportive, kinda unbelievable!
When walking the KW 5k,there was a man on a corner with a piano on wheels playing great boogie woogie music. Further down the course, there was a HUGE,about 8ft. Tall, juke box playing AND blowing bubbles. Some of the volunteers wore costumes while cheering us on. Every couple of minutes I could laugh and smile and it made me less serious and concerned about my performance .....helped me to lighten up on myself. I can only imagine how amazing it must be to walk or do a run while totally surrounded by all that Disney!!!!!!:cloud9:

I'm running the 2013 TOwer of Terri 10 miler. Super excited.

I hope to be doing this race too. We did the 2012, but DH ran with a significant fever (yes, tried to talk him out of it, but he didn't want to let me down), so the afterparty wasn't the best for us, though it looked awesome otherwise. Looking forward to a healthier experience this year!

Hey-I am curious about the 1/2 marathon weekend. We are thinking about doing the family 5k next year that is in the early morning same day this cruise leaves, that way my daughter can participate. But how hard core are they about getting you off the course if they think your pace isn't fast enough? My mom has a bad knee, but can still walk at fairly good pace, and wants to do this with us. I am going in search of other RunDisney threads right after I send this. TIA!

My daughter and I basically walked the 5k because I wanted to be rested for the Princess half the next day. We walked about 80% of it and jogged nice and easy for the rest. We stopped for quick photos and one long line for Donald and Daisy. We finished in exactly one hour and there were plenty of people still on the course behind us.

As for waking the half, I would say train, train, train! The sweepers are nice, but firm. The bus will park itself in front of you on the course and then that's it! I would have been pretty disappointed in myself personally if I hadn't finished because I was getting my picture taken. If all you want is character pics, it's much cheaper to buy a park ticket ;). That said, sometimes you just gotta' jump in and give it a try! And I think Disney is perfect for a first-timer. Very relaxed and newbie-friendly. It was the hardest thing I ever did (well, after childbirth) and the most personally rewarding, as well. Amazing experience! You never know what you're capable of until you try!

And I'd love to hear everyone's experiences/bragging after they do the CC 5K. It's no small thing to commit to 3.1 miles while on vacation!!!!!!

Nice job on the video!:thumbsup2

Thank you for doing this! I thought the video was great also.

I am NOT a runner but am trying to get into it to do the Tower of Terror 10miler. I can sometimes walk fast than I run. I am building up to this trip with some 5kz here at home and knowing how this is was great!

:thumbsup2

I am doing the TOT also - we have a Great Aloha Run which is 8 miles and I usually walk that just over 2 hours but just under 2-1/2 hours - depending on the day. I figure if I can walk this, then I have a shot of getting my time up so that I can use the restroom and take pics with the characters :lmao: and won't be swept (my biggest fear). After hearing about it from you all, I am gonna keep my course - here's hoping I start actually running soon instead of walking fast:rotfl:

all your positive feedback reminds me of someone (minnelor) who passed in one of the tornados two years ago and was very encouraging to me - thanks for keeping the spirit.

THANKS!

My 1st time on the Dream, we didn't know anything about the CC5K until after it had been run.
We are going on again this April and I am so looking forward to this and will be crossing the finish line even if I have to crawl over it :) I've never slogged (that's what I call my slow jogging) in that kind of heat/humidity before.

Hey we're on the same cruise :) My daughter is an avid runner and is plannign on doing the run, I want to do it with her but I don't want to be the last across the finish line. I am not a runner but I can walk. My son my run too.

Look forward to meeting you PlutosMom319 pirate:

Being last is better than not starting at all. You should do it. :)

I am thinking about doing the CC5K, but I am not a runner what so ever (partially due to injury that prevents me from running), so how bad does it look to walk the 5K?

With the exception of chasing our dog when it escapes I have not ran in 22 years and even then I never did more than 1 mile in high school gym class. I really want to do the 5k though. It will be just a few weeks after my 40th bday when we cruise. I downloaded one of those 5k training apps for my phone. I also went online and ordered sneakers. I have not worn sneakers in 10 years. I will let y'all know in a month how I am doing.

Do not be afraid to repeat weeks! If you can't move up to the next level, don't. Just do that run until you are OK. There are so many systems in the body that are going to be doing things they haven't done in a long time. Let the heart, the veins, the arteries, the muscles, and the lungs all get on the same page.

It took me longer than the prescribed time to do the couch to 5K, and I was the better for it. And I could not believe how much it helped my weight loss efforts! (but my body has ALWAYS loved running more than almost any other activity)

I apologize if this has already been asked, I skimmed through the threads and didn't see it anywhere...

My husband is so excited to run the 5K, but we've read that the path isn't well marked. True or no?

Thanks!!

No it's not really marked, BUT they showed us a map on the screen for quite a bit of time, and described the course, and it's not really *hard* to work out where you should go.

That said there were several runners going the opposite way on the loop than we were all supposed to go. That kinda bugged me; not sure why, but it did.

People walk 5ks all the time. There were certainly some last time I ran it.

ITA.
I started C25K in October, just before I turned 38. I was always athletic as a kid, but could never run. CC5K gave me a goal, and I decided I was going to to it :thumbsup2. C25K was perfect for me, I ended up doing the running sections very slowly (4.5mph), but finished every week. After I could run 5K (in over 40 mins), I started working on speed. Now I can run it in about 31 mins, hoping I can break the 30 minute barrier on Saturday when we are at Castaway Cay ;).
The other important things for me were stretching and a good recovery plan. I find chocolate milk really helps me rehydrate after a workout, and lessens the post-exercise muscle aches, but there are lots of ideas out there on running websites.
