Is there anything of local interest to do in St Maarten without booking an excursion or renting a car??

You can walk from the ship to Philipsburg where there is lots of shopping. In Philipsburg there is the Great Bay beach. :)

You can take a water taxi to Phillipsburg, or it's about a 15 minute walk.

From Phillipsburg you can take a regular city bus (a 10-15 passenger van) for $2 to the capital of the French side to to several other places.

A taxi from the port to almost anyway will be less than $10 a person- Orient beach, the airport beach with the 747s landing, etc.

As PP have mention it is real easy to take the water taxi over to Great Bay beach and after some time on the beach you can hit Phillipsburg for some shopping which it right behind the beach. Here are some pics of the water taxi and Great Bay beach.

I highly recommend the 12 Meter Regatta. You get to crew actual America's Cup sailboats, you never lose sight of the Fantasy, it only lasts three to four hours, so there is plenty of time for shopping. We were able to go to back to the ship, eat lunch at Cabanas and then go to Maho Beach to see the airplanes land and still be back in plenty of time for boarding.
