"That wasn't as annoying as I thought it would be", Dream/Bahamas/2.7.13

The sailaway party was fun, had a fun feeling to it. I think if we were to do it again, we would be up on the higher deck, looking down on the action, though that might impact DS's dance floor. :) Or maybe I would be up there, enjoying myself in my way, while DH and DS could be in the thick of the action, enjoying themselves in their way.

The main party is on the pool deck, of course, with the pools all covered up. but there is the spa sitting off to the side, and I saw people in there. Now THAT would be a nice way to sailaway. On the other hand, it seemed like a bunch of random people in there, and that takes away from the "ooh that's nice" feeling. Maybe the BEST way to do sailaway would be to have the BIG suites with the hot tubs on your own private balcony! Woo! And now let's laugh at the idea of us ever being able to do that.

In a phrase I keep repeating because things just flew by, "soon enough" it was time to get ready for shows and dinner. My aunt and I had, separately, decided we did not feel like going to the shows. This worked out nicely, because it gave us a chance to hang out together, and to drink the wine I had brought for her. I helped the guys get ready for the shows (our dinner was after the shows so they were ready for dinner, too) and then they went off one way and I went the other.

Mmm, wine... If you ever get to OR or WA, pick up some McMenamins Black Rabbit Red. Tasty stuff! We had good talks, though sometimes a bit melancholy (it's hard for us to keep away from the subject of my mom/her sister and how terribly we still miss her).

While everyone else was at the show, Auntie and I checked out the open house at the kid's club. Open house is when adults can go in, even without kids. It was pretty cool! Really loud, even without tons of kids, but still seemed to be fun.

This is the hand-washing station. You stick your hands in, and it washes them for you. Not sure how it works, since there's no chance in heck I could do that. I've watched Firestarter (and read the book) too many times to stick my hand in something like that.

IMG_7761_zps2fac2664.jpg

In between show and dinner, they turned down our room. (for early seating, I assume it's between dinner and show)

IMG_7763_zpsa7fc086f.jpg

The box contained two (two?) DVC member lanyards. I wanted to wear one, but they were scratchy. Drat.

IMG_7764_zpsebcecca5.jpg

Then it was dinnertime! We had all decided that we would be on the same seating *schedule*, but not at the same table. That was a brilliant decision, as we would see the following morning when we tried to have breakfast together. The kids eat a LOT better when separated. But that first night it was hard, because all Eamon wanted to do was be with his cousins, and they weren't following the logic the grownups were explaining. Oh well.

We were all at Animator's Palate. On the older ("classic" ships), this restaurant goes from black and white to color, including the staff outfits, as you dine. On the Dream and Fantasy, it's different. I'm sure others have taken great pictures, so I won't feel guilty that we didn't take any (though actually I would have sworn I did...hmm...maybe they are on Robert's camera, which he still has not remembered to hand over, LOL). There are neat things going on with the walls. It's like the Crush "show" at DCA (and Epcot, though I haven't been to the one at Epcot), where sea creatures talk with you, move around, and interact. We weren't at a table where we would be interacted with, but from where I sat I could see the sea creatures moving from one wall area to another, which was pretty neat.

At the time we didn't feel like we were in a good spot, but gosh, we were rushed and a bit tired and really overwhelmed. It might have been a primo position; we just weren't aware of it at the time.

Our server was Leslie from India (a traditional use of the name, for the record, as he was a man) and our assistant server was Ludovic from France. Leslie ended up being pretty great, but we adored Ludovic from the start. Eamon was starving the whole trip, and got a variety of items, some from the kid's menu, some from the grownup side. I think it was weirding out the server, but oh well. And I was weirding him out because I wasn't eating huge quantities of food. I just was not as hungry as I wanted to be. I had given myself permission to gain, this is seriously what I said repeatedly, up to 15 lbs and not feel bad about it. Now, I realized later this was a dangerous proposition, as I went on the trip with all BRAND NEW clothes in a brand new size down, so if I had gained 15 it would have caused wardrobe problems. But anyway, I came back .4 lb lighter. That's how little my appetite was for almost the entire trip. And the cruise was no different.

So that first night I got the salad and the mushroom risotto. Salad was tiny. Risotto was delicious. Salty, but very tasty. And with risotto, it always looks like it's not going to be enough, but it usually is. He gave me basically a hidden mickey serving, 3 balls of risotto, and I think I got into the second one and had to give up. It was too filling.

Robert got the black bean patty, which is generally held in disdain on the Cruise forum. When he tried JUST the patty, he agreed. When he swirled it all together with patty, salsa, sauce, etc, he said it was quite tasty. He did give suggestions, like they should use a touch of habanero instead of the chipotle. I was in the restaurant biz when chipotle really came into fashion, and it was used then as a way to add a little heat along with a really unique flavor. Alas, the chipotle, he said, didn't make sense in this dish. A tiny bit of habanero would, Robert says, really bring out the flavors while not adding its OWN distinct flavor (like the chipotle does), and with just a tiny bit it wouldn't be horribly hot.

He and Eamon also tried the truffle pursiette thingies, which were like ravioli with cheese and truffle (oil?). E liked them, but didn't go that far out of his comfort zone after.

At some point during the meal, family found us, and after dinner we all met up at their table and made our way out.

But before that happened, while chatting with our server, he expressed concern that I hadn't eaten much. Since I had liked it, that wasn't the problem, but in that conversation I did ask if Indian food was at all possible. He seemed thrilled at the idea, and said he would get a low-spice curry going for me the following evening. How exciting!

For the cruise, Robert was still injured and was going to bed early. I know that my peer-cousin (as opposed to cousin's children, who are my first cousins once removed, and are Eamon's second cousins) and her husband and I went wandering the *next* evening, but I think this first night we all had a relatively early bedtime.

As always, I will update if I figure out that I was wrong about that. And hopefully I'll be able to find Robert's camera soon and see what gems he's got on there!

I am most pleased to announce that more pictures were found, and the post including pictures from Animator's Palate, along with some more info, is found here for your reading pleasure. Enjoy.

How nice that the guys did things together and you were able to hang out with your aunt.

I would not use the hand thing. Nope, no way.

Why two and not three lanyards? That made no sense to me.

Did you have to dress for dinners?

So glad someone else wouldn't be able to use those hand washers.

I have no idea why they didn't give three lanyards. The scratchiness helped us all feel better about not having one for each of us, but still. It was odd.

With the 3 night, no, there was no formal night. The last night, which for us coincided with Royal Palace (which feels fancy), was an optional "dress-up" night, but there was no need for anything more. I did wear dresses each night, and the guys wore slacks and nice shirts (and nice shoes, too), so that was fun.

Although I would have liked a formal night (b/c I have dresses that would work and would fit me), I know Robert was VERY glad to not have to buy a suit or buy/rent a tux. He's doing so well with WW, but is still nowhere near where he wants to be, and doesn't want to buy expensive clothes that fit him *now*. It's hard enough to get him to get new jeans (which, for his size, run around $50 on sale), let alone something fancier.

I caught E's cold, and I'm really not happy right now. He was doing some self-led learning work earlier, and then because I was cleaning the other day and unearthed some stuff, he found an old scrapbook set I bought with him in mind.

It's a little one, and I had already stuck pictures from his first Disneyland trip in the package, so now he's putting it together with the stickers from the pack and all that. I was giving him instruction and he started glaring at me, LOL. He knows perfectly well that this was bought for him to do, and he wants to do it! Turns out that this is a nice, quiet, not-too-talky (b/c my throat hurts) way of spending an afternoon!

This was our Nassau day. Extended family had no interest in getting off the ship, but I had read that there were self-guided things to do and we wanted to go ashore. We got a slow start and then thought it would be nice to have breakfast with family.

They were at the breakfast buffet at Enchanted Garden so we met them there. They'd gotten a nice big table for everyone. On vacations, I find it interesting to see what everyone eats. For us, we do have treats, but we have to make SURE that we have real food, too, or there are meltdowns. We try to maintain good blood sugars, basically. But other people have very different opinions, and we saw more than one child throughout the cruise having, quite literally, bacon and donuts for breakfast! Now, for an omnivore, I'm sure there's nothing tastier than that combo. But it would be horrible for us, in terms of freakouts and nasty moods later on.

We were trying to give the cousins time together, so Robert and I went to the buffet and got E a plate. He hated our choices. I ate a bit (had Cream of Wheat, which I never have at home and I don't know why! Love it!) and took him back through. The little stinker chose almost the exact same items that we chose. When we went back, they had cleared his not-very-touched plate so we couldn't show him. Oh well. After that 5 minutes at the buffet when he felt in control, he ate it all up and was happy to do so.

After that, we went off the ship, and they did...I'm not sure what! :)

I was fascinated by the AquaDuck, and I'm starting to think I will have to have a do-over just to go on that. Think they would let me run onto the ship while they are in port and cleaning, before embarkation, just to ride it? Nah, I don't think so.

IMG_7767_zps2db4ebb0.jpg

Of course, it's possible I never did go on it because I kept looking at it from underneath and it freaked me out!

IMG_7768_zps624483c9.jpg

The view of the port area while walking towards that very area.

IMG_7771_zps9dad82df.jpg

Those are very common pictures.

I know that Robert has pictures of me and E in front of this, but for now, it's just the ship.

IMG_7772_zpsadfaad0c.jpg

I didn't even see the dude in this picture until after I put it on photobucket. What IS that area? I've named it Dream Prisoner, LOL.

IMG_7773_zps808614a3.jpg

Pretty.

IMG_7774_zps4f23718a.jpg

OK so now we get to the "why'd we do that?" part of the trip. Getting off the ship in Nassau with no group and no excursion and with an 8 year old and a camera and all that? Not a great idea. We were just overwhelmed with the number of wannabe tour guides offering their services, and for some reason Robert let me go ahead of them. I say "for some reason", but this is just how he does things...I joke sometimes that he is using me to clear any landmines in front of him, because wherever we go, he ends up behind. He says I walk too fast, but he keeps up perfectly, just 2 feet behind me. It is infuriating, and it wasn't good while we were just trying to get out of the port area, because I'm bad at saying "NO" to people who are so pleasantly wanting to talk to us about the tours they could give us. But of course it just wasted their time as well as ours. But he never did walk in front of me. :rolleyes1

I wanted to do the walking tour found here. I had a little map printed out. But I guess I should have really shown the guys what we were doing, because they had very little faith in me, it seems. Especially the kidlet. The bad sidewalks, lack of street signs, and disrepair of lots of the areas we were walking past just got to him, and we hadn't gone all that far when I gave up.

So we did see Parliament, but we didn't see anything else. Well, except this.

IMG_7775_zps6ba28ace.jpg

I have now added in Robert's pictures of Nassau, and you can see that post here.

And here is a study in ships.

I told my husband there was a Starbucks in Nassau, and he got super excited! So I think we will have to hunt that down when we are there.

I have been on a weight loss journey for the last 8 months or so and understand the not eating a lot at one sitting. There is no way I will be able to eat three course meals. I will be lucky to eat a salad, a small meal and small, small dessert (I love sweets!). I too thought about giving myself permission to gain on the cruise but think I will try to maintain overall. Since I am generally an early riser, I will try to walk early before the family gets up (I can get good pics that early too!) Any other tips for maintaining would be helpful.

Love the TR so far.

Congrats on your weight loss! I had every intention of using the fitness center every day, but time just got away from me. I couldn't wake up early (the rocking of the ship was so soothing), I felt lazy... And I was full all the time. It was crazy. I saw others eating these big meals, and I kind of *wanted* to do it, but I just couldn't. If there's a next time, I'm going to use that fitness room!

Are you a walker or a jogger? If so, look into the Castaway Cay 5K! There's a whole thread dedicated to it on the main cruise forum. I did get up early THAT day, and was so glad I did.

I think I already mentioned it, but we never got food at Cabanas, nor did we visit Flo's Cafe or any of the other places. I guess being on the concierge level made that easy, since we could grab little snacks here and there, and get cappuccinos. I guess when I say I don't remember eating elsewhere, that's not totally true because of the lounge. But their snacks were little, and we would just run through there, basically.

I guess I have no tips. :) Eat how your body wants you to eat, exercise if you can. Drink lots of water b/c that food is SALTY. Have fun!

ETA, I wish we'd gone to that Starbucks! It was on the NICE road. It might have made things brighter for us. As it was we just felt bummed out. I felt sad that I wasn't trusted enough to lead us somewhere without people being complainy-pants, they felt sad that their usually trustworthy tour guide was apparently trying to get them killed by traffic or mugged, and we were all just disgruntled. Some magic coffee would have made everything better. :)

The walk back to the ship is a long one. Especially when you've had two bottles of water and didn't visit the magic-coffee place with bathrooms. :scared:

Because of this, I got to take pictures of this bathroom (E says it was on Deck 4) because there was no one else there. :)

IMG_7778_zpse67aed7b.jpg

Stall door.

IMG_7779_zpsecbd6e09.jpg

A little dizzy in there!

IMG_7780_zpse508adf7.jpg

Oh, I should mention that our first day (partial day) on the ship was pretty hard for me. I felt the movement like crazy. I was rockin' and rollin', and wasn't sure it was going to be a fun time for me. I was trying to make the best of it, but wowza it was really messing with my equilibrium!

Thankfully my aunt and I did the Open House for the Club, because we met a lovely CM there who had time to chat. The most important bit of info he gave me was that on this cruise, that first day is the worst. That once we got further out it was all going to calm down. This helped me emotionally that night. And he was very correct. Now, he'd been on the Dream during Sandy, and while the Dream didn't make the same decisions that the Fantasy did, it was still rocky on the ship. So he knows that things *can* be bad, but on these dates it shouldn't be like that.

Next morning I woke up and everything had calmed down. Whew.

More bathroom.

IMG_7782_zpsab978bc2.jpg

IMG_7783_zps4cf9af60.jpg

Since we were back on board, E wanted to get to cousins immediately. We made that happen, and dropped him off at the Club/Lab. There was a strong expectation, and several conversations about that expectation, that he would in the Club/Lab until we picked him up for the show. (I think he had a quick snack in the lounge, or he wasn't hungry)

With this unexpected kid-free freedom, we didn't know what to do! Since we hadn't been to that Starbucks, we went up to the Cove Cafe (I think that's the name) for some caffeine and snackages.

Only one goody was picture-worthy.

IMG_7785_zps44dbb25a.jpg

This is more about the chairs than my coffee.

IMG_7786_zps28eeac36.jpg

So empty, so luxurious...

IMG_7787_zps66a44336.jpg

OK, iphoto is freaking me out. It wants me to label a FACE in that photo. Whimper. There's no face. And the spot where it says is the face is up towards the ceiling, to the right. iphoto is scaring me right now. I think it sees ghosts.

Back to relaxing.

IMG_7788_zps1cfe1519.jpg

Caffeine hit, and we went wandering. Turns out I had gone to the art gallery with cousin&hubby the night before (forgot until just now), and I wanted to show Robert. This is one of the cooler things IMO. Sure it could be basically and crudely made at home, but you'd have to have a really good person for the matting!

IMG_7789_zps0fa4ef0f.jpg

IMG_7790_zpsbc1b27d8.jpg

to be continued...

Aha! Robert has his camera, and we'll be dealing with photobucket for awhile. Woo! New pix!

Here are some non-story-line pictures of the ship that Robert took.

IMG_2094_zps204d6e5e.jpg

I realized while getting these pictures organized that I hardly feel like I was in the atrium (or whatever this pictured area is called), even though we entered that way. And it's because we had the concierge person hovering, our family was there (yay!), and suddenly everyone's rooms were ready. When I'm overwhelmed like that, my surroundings disappear. (though as a sidenote, I've noticed if I can sneakily cover my ears, the overwhelming feeling fades and I do a lot better...it's one of the reasons I tend to encourage ear plugs to be carried when you have kids in a group that get really wild or whatever when it's loud and crazy around them...it really does help dampen things so you can BE there)

Forgetting about the picture with me. Maybe later once I figure out if it's properly cropped.

Robert found some pictures on his phone, and it's very timely of him, too.

Too bad your guys are party poopers. I am not one for organized tours, but I also don't care for the locals being pushy.

That light is amazing! Thank you for the upholstery. I really enjoy seeing that sort of thing.

I'm enjoying reading along! Well, not really enjoying hearing about your MIL and her continued shenanigans.

I just typed out a long paragraph that illustrates how strongly I can relate to that issue, but it really REALLY would bring this thread down. Maybe that' why I'm so quiet about this topic. So maybe at a more appropriate time I'll share, but just understand that I completely get it.

I'm living vicariously through you on your cruise. Did I mention that I canceled ours? I couldn't justify the cost, especially when it didn't include airfare, tips, excursions, a hotel room the night before, transfers, etc. We can go to Mexico, stay in a hotel for 8 nights, with airfare and all meals and drinks included, and even adding on tips and excursions it will be half of what the cruise would have cost. The cruise will be cheaper at a different time of year, so we can do it one day. But for the time I wanted (my birthday) this is just a cheaper option, especially since I was/am really worried about seasickness.

****

We are staying at POR in two weeks, just for one night, in a Royal Room (surprise for the kids). Any tips or suggestions? We really won't be there much, but we have the option of driving or taking the bus to the parks (Epcot and MK). Do you recommend one over the other?

Aw, major hugs for canceling your cruise! It IS a lot of money, though. So are you going to Mexico for your birthday, or was that just an example of what you could do with the money?

The royal room was very pretty; check out the wallpaper borders up near the ceiling, especially the ones in the bathroom. And look at the sink fixtures as well. And be CAREFUL walking over the blue "marble" thing that separates the vanity from the bedroom.

I was just about to give you thoughts on the food court, but I am unqualified to do that, I've just remembered. :) It's really nice in the seating area, though, if you do manage to find something to eat! And POFQ is a lovely walk away, if they have anything suitable diet-wise.

The main pool is pretty great, but the quiet pool near Parterre and Oak Manor was gorgeous and looked like that old Ban du'Soleil ad with the woman swimming.

If where your room is is important to you, even for the one day, check out the official POR thread on the Resorts forum. There's a guy (I assume) there that can hook you up with fax number to the assignment team. :)

I'm really sorry you get the issues with MIL. If you want to post about it, post. Maybe we can just tell people to "skip this series of posts!" if we're going to chat about it. I know I thought about erasing most of my response to Michele, because I went on such a rant about it. I was all embarrassed. MIL still hasn't actually told us that she's driving. Nor has she asked for money, however. Which is good, because she raised children who will have strings attached to money (just like she did to them), and one of those strings is "you are not to drive when you have 1/4 of your vision gone and the potential for further strokes is high". Call us crazy....

Too bad your guys are party poopers. I am not one for organized tours, but I also don't care for the locals being pushy.

We've talked about the party-pooper thing since then, and I think I needed to communicate more (I was trying to be all "tah dah, surprise!" about it, which was a big mistake in retrospect). But nothing was going to solve the issue of Eamon simply not having had experiences in towns like Nassau before, other than having experiences in towns like Nassau. But on the other hand, there *have* been incidents like muggings there, especially with ship tourists, so it's not like there was NO danger. And with Robert as injured and slow as he was I know he didn't feel as capable as he normally does.

I looked through his pictures, and discovered that we did see a few things. We just didn't realize it at the time. Welcome to my world of oblivious-sightseeing.:wave2:

Enjoying your trip so far, hope you continue on. :goodvibes

I will! I got Robert's pictures on photobucket, but since I switched to the NEW website (aka "beta") it doesn't have all the features I liked. Like being able to put them in time order or alphabetical order. Or any order. :headache: Which is becoming an enormous headache, quite literally, for me.

I can't help it...that chandelier is so beautiful. I need to see it in person.

It is pretty. Going back to my "oblivious sightseeing" comment about myself, though...I didn't actually appreciate it until I saw it in the pictures. How do I do that? :confused3

Well, I'll just go back to "a 3 night cruise just isn't enough time". Rush rush rush.

I have a nasty nasty cold, which I do not recommend. If anyone ever saw the Third Rock From The Sun episode where the aliens catch their first colds and are absolutely mystified and horrified by the whole thing, that's how I feel. I feel like it's my first cold ever, and it's all horrendous. Tried to get Robert to stay home from work today to take care of me (I'm such a stereotypical *male* when it comes to being ill), but he had a language thing to go to, to give him and his coworkers some useful phrases and a background in Cyrillic streetsigns for their next series of trips. He didn't want to miss that.

What a great photo!! You look fantastic!

And yes, Mexico instead of the cruise. Not my "Dream Trip" but still will be fun, and a nice change from Disneyland where I will be overthinking every dollar we spend. We will be staying in an all-inclusive, so I don't have to give any thought to paying for food!

Thank you for the tips on POR. I'm looking forward to trying it!

Liking the trip report, good job. As for the picture of the submarine tower in the ground at Port Canaveral, the Navy has a sub testing base at Port Canaveral. On my last cruise there were two subs docked as we were going out of the port to sea.
