Oh no, quarantined!

Oh no! My mom and step dad are on their first Disney Cruise which left port on Sunday. My brother talked to her yesterday and she had been quarantined to her room for the day. Sunday night she experienced some diarrhea and went to the ship's doctor to get something to take. He quarantined her to her room and said she couldn't go ashore in Nassau the next day. They said if she did they wouldn't let her back on the ship. I feel so bad for her. She was really looking forward to this trip and wanted to see Atlantis. Today is their day at Castaway Cay, I sure hope she is able to go ashore and enjoy that! Tomorrow is a day at sea and then they are back to the port. At least that isn't the end of their trip. They will be heading further south and staying somewhere in the Keys for a few more days.

Poor mom and dad! My step dad was free to come and go, but he chose not to go ashore without her. I sure hope the rest of their trip is good!

What a bummer for them! If they bought insurance they may be able to get some amount of refund. We travel with OTC meds. I understand the ship's doctor's position it to avoid spreading illness, but if it was simply something she ate that didn't agree with her it's a shame to make someone waste a day of vacation on quarantine. I hope she's feeling better and gets to enjoy CC!

The doctor has no way of really knowing the reason for the diarrea. He is just falling on the side of caution. By the time they did any tests (if they had the capability), the results wouldn't be back before the specific cruiser the test was being done on got off the ship. And they'd have to be quarantined during that time anyway.

DH was quarantined on our Med cruise in 2010. 24 hours with anti-diarrea pills and BRAT diet, he was good to go. But they do check to make sure you are staying in your room. I was allowed to come and go as I wished. The general feeling (between DH, me, & doctor) was something he ate. So the 24 hour quarantine was just in case it wasn't. If he had still had the diarrea and nausea after that time, his quarantine would have been continued.

Yes, she said they would be checking periodically to make sure she was in the room. She was so glad they had reserved a bigger room with a veranda. It sounds really nice with a king bed and a sitting area. Not the worst place to be stuck, if you have to be stuck somewhere!

I'll have her check into the insurance. I know they bought it.

Wow seriously? Who comes and checks? The room steward? I'm glad that they do this but how awkward for him...

I hope she gets better!

Get RX before you go, wait till they get bill for Dr. Visit. That may end cruising.
Had patches and several medications that require RX with me.

They ask if you have been sick when you check in, do not answer yes. You will not go. Do not says you have a little cold, rehearse with your children. They have to go to counter to have picture taken. If you leave ship and come back your picture is checked in computer coming and going.

The story isn't over or all been heard. I do feel bad for the family, but you will probably see that the ship does a lot of special things for them. They will try to make the best of any situation. It is miserable being STUCK in a room with a verandah on a DCL ship. Just saying.... she could be at home with it.

Look for them to explain how the staff were all very polite and offered room service and extra little pixie dust stuff!

Now she will have a reason to cruise again!

Do you really think that is the right thing to do?..especailly for all the other passingers?

Wow. Seriously?

First off, the doctor visits are a set fee. It's not that expensive. I believe it's something like $150 for the visit plus medication costs. If you have travel insurance they will reimburse it. We've been plenty of times (pink eye, fever, etc.) Hasn't stopped us from cruising.

Second, if you HAVE BEEN SICK, I will hope you answer yes. They will examine you to determine if your sickness precludes you from boarding. I guess people like you are where epidemics come from.

AND REHEARSE WITH YOUR CHILDREN--for what? Lying about being sick.

I don't usually get mad at posts on disboards. I don't care about people who prefer Pepsi over Cokes, etc. But this post is just ridiculous.

Yes. By all means, come aboard and share your illness with others so they can be confined to their cabin in the middle of their cruise, at best. Incredibly selfish.

I completely understand the doctor erring on the side of caution and I support that position! I was just saying it's a bummer for the passenger. It's likely only a 3 or 4 night cruise, unlike a week or 2 where losing a day isn't as big a deal. I have heard that DCL goes above and beyond for passengers who are quarantined to try and make it a little special!

Rehearse with you children? Really? Teaching your children to flat out lie.

Not the best advice I have seen on these boards. Not even close.

I was wondering this too. :confused3

OP, hope she is feeling better and was able to enjoy Castaway Cay. :goodvibes

Not Cool! :furious:

I'm anxious to hear from her to see how the rest of the cruise is! I'll talk to her on Thursday and find out for sure.

About the checking; she told my brother there was a note on their door yesterday saying that someone would be calling occasionally to check if she was in the room.

Really? I hope I never cruise with you.

OMG - Same thing happened to us on our Honeymoon cruise (quarantined 2 nights!), and an INSIDE CABIN!! I've learned ALWAYS bring your own Imodium!! It's not an uncommon thing with me, so I didn't even think twice before heading to the doctor on board (tried shops first, all directed me to there). I was ok, not sick, but it was not fun having to stay in our cabin! I understand WHY they did it, but learned my lesson the hard way.
