Found this upper berth photo--concerned...

I was googling away about DCL and found a blog that did a daily entry about their cruise. I saw this picture and it concerned me a bit...

Notice the bedrails don't ACTUALLY keep someone from rolling out?? However, I've never seen any pictures like this--they all look tall enough in other shots I've seen.

We cruise in April and my 6 year old is supposed to sleep on the upper berth--but there is no way I would feel safe doing that if this is what the bedrails actually look like.

Can anyone answer this for me? THANKS SO MUCH!

I believe they are adjustable kind of like hospital beds. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I found this picture online:

If you look at Day 1 on the first blog the OP is referring to, the bed rails look higher, as they do in the other links. It almost looks like they put 2 mattresses on the top bunk.

Yes, the Day 1 post says something about using the top bunk for storage and playing, and there's a picture of the mom and kid sitting on a mattress well below the rail with a poofy duvet or something across part of the top bunk. If that were spread out in subsequent pictures it could look like part of the mattress when it's not.

They will also put a full size bedrail on the bunk if you request it. Just let your room steward now the first evening. We did that even as the kids got older.

They will also put a waterproof mattress pad on the beds if you request. I always felt bad about that because they would have to remake the bed the first evening. I always requested it on the reservation but it never happened until I personally requested it.

I have the worst picture of my 5 yr old on the top bunk. Its not that clear. She did fine.

Does the full size bedrail go all the way around? My kids kinda wander around the bed when the sleep? (it's not uncommon to find them sideways or upside down)

I love the idea of a waterproof mattress. Although my little guy is potty trained, we've had a couple of instances when he is entirely exhausted that something happened. My guess is he will be entirely exhausted on the cruise. We're not going until the end of June and he's already very excited about it.

No it is a regular Graeco mesh bedrail.

I have no idea where they got the extra mattress on that bed in the picture that day, but that is not how the bed usually is. I have to wonder if they stuck something underneath the mattress to raise it up. It doesn't go above the bottom edge, so the rail is all above the mattress on the upper bunk. The rail itself is not adjustable.

There is something under the mattress to raise it up.
My kids started sleeping up there when they were young and they have never fallen out.

This was my (big for his age) 10 year old son in 09. Your 6 year old should have no issues.

Here is the bunk on the Magic in July. I think because they said they took the mattress down to the floor at night that the mattress is not sunk into the bed like it is supposed to be.

They can take that same bedrail you see on the bottom bunk and put it on the top bunk if necessary. My DD slept in the top bunk on the Magic at 4 almost 5 and at 6 with no problems at all. I'm always more concerned with the little one climbing up there to play, so we take the ladder off and place it on the top bunk until it is time to sleep so they don't climb up and goof off.

The bed comes with a small rail. If you'd like a larger rail just let them know.

My very restless sleeper, who was 6 at the time, had no problem in the top bunk on our last cruise. The rail was definitely high enough to keep her safe.

Sorry for the delay in thanking everyone! I appreciate your responses--and I appreciate the person that shared the the bigger bed rails being available, if needed!

Thank you!!

I would feel much worse if they had to replace a soiled mattress!!! :rotfl: I'm glad to know this is an option. DS4 has been accident-free for a while, but I always worry outside the house.
