Just found a bunch of old "mixed tapes" and other cassettes.

I am having a blast going down memory lane. I found a basket of old tapes, and thankfully still have my old dinosaur of a tape player. Hysterical! It's amazing how I still remember the words of songs I haven't heard in 20+ years. These tapes are from when I was my daughter's age, way back in the late 80's and early 90's. A lot of them were taped off of the radio, and it's so funny to listen to old stations that aren't around any more, and old commercials for places that don't exist. Wow, do I feel old!!

Some of my favorites were 10,000 Maniacs, Depeche Mode, OMD, The Bangles, They Might Be Giants, Tears For Fears, The Cure, U2, INXS, etc. I'll bet a lot of you younger DISers haven't heard of some of them.

The very best was when all of the sudden a song came on, with MY 13-year old voice singing along with it! My girls and husband were dying! I thought I was such a fabulous singer.

These tapes remind me of old boyfriends, dear friends, high school, etc. I kind of wish I had a cassette player walkman so I could listen to them while I work out.

I have a box of mixed tapes in our basement. When I was in college, my BFF & I used to create a mixed tape at the end of every semester, filled with songs that would remind us of our adventures This was the early-mid 1990's & filled with a variety of stuff we listened to: Grateful Dead, Phish, The Monkees, Tom Waits, Lemonheads, The Pixies, The Pogues, REM, Sarah McLachlan, Natalie Merchant, & some popular radio songs. Someday I'd like to convert these to CDs because we no longer have a cassette player & I'm afraid the tape might be fragile after all these years

Funny to see this - I got rid of a bunch of old mix tapes last Summer. Def Leppard, Guns N Roses, The Bangles, Metallica, Tears for Fears, INXS (might have to fire up youtube and listen to some INXS!), Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Stryper (anyone remember them) ... I could go on and on! Lots of memories there - concerts, being with friends, high school, etc.

I used to have a ton of mix tapes. DH even made one for dd17 for our first trip to WDW when she was three. It was a long car trip from MN to FL.

We were cleaning the basement about 3-4 years ago and came across all of our old cassettes. We kept a couple that we couldn't get on CD and a couple of the mix tapes. We threw hundreds of tapes into the trash.

I consider my Ipod, my modern mix tape!

ETA - Stryper is one of my guity pleasures. My kids laugh as I sing along with "Calling on You" at the top of my lungs!

My gosh!! I remember sitting by the radio for hours waiting for a song to come on so I could hit record lol!! I recently found a huge box of notes between friends and I from jr high and high school. With all this texting to kids even write notes anymore? Lol oh the deep dark secrets in some of those

True dat! And woe be unto you if you accidentally dropped one of those notes and they fell into the wrong hands! Especially if they mentioned the boy you liked by name.

We are moving and while clearing out stuff I've found over 300 tapes - mixed ones that I did from the radio and pre recorded. 1980 on

Some many memories brought back, just looking at the jackets and the play lists.

No idea what to do with them though as I only have a walkman which I could listen to them on .

Haha! It's a WNY thing. I begrudgingly made the switch to 98.5 when Magic 102 switched to more adult contemporary stuff. But Sandy Beach really takes me back!!

I've kept a bunch of them. And I do remember sitting by the radio - especially the top 40 countdown on the weekend! I even have one old Christmas tape that my brother and I made from actual vinyl records. You can still hear the scratchy sound.

lol - to the pp, it's not a regional thing at all. I have a stack of tapes from WLIR in the 80's. Now, a couple of my favorite WLIR dj's are on Sirius/XM's First Wave channel, and hearing their voices takes me right back.

LOL! I have a couple tapes from WLIR. My oldest tapes are from college station 88.7 WNHU in 1983, University of New Haven's radio station. One of them has How Soon is Now? From The Smiths when it was first released.
