2013 MED Cruise - flight layover

Has anyone ever had a layover at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, Netherlands? Are there any "hoops" you have to jump through when transferring to a US bound flight in Europe? Barcelona to Amsterdam to Detroit.

Hi there,

I have travelled through Schipol a few times in the last couple of years and found this to be an excellent airport. One thing to be aware of we had to go though security at the gate, however this is the standard stuff in every airport nowadays. If you do have the time try and take a 20 mins journey into the centre of Amsterdam, the trains are directly below the airport and very frequent and cheap and easy to do.

Hi, we had a layover in schiphol with a 13 month and a 3 year. It was fab, no problems at all. When we checked in at Cardiff (Wales) we asked for our luggage to be checked straight through to Salt lake City. We had 3 flights in total which was, Cardiff to Amsterdam. Amsterdam to St Pauls Minneapolis and St Pauls to Salt lake City. We did this as return journey and all was fine, even with 2 little ones in tow.

Schiphol is my home airport....

If you arrive from Barcelona you likely arrive at the terminal the farthest away from the terminal you leave from. So be prepared to a hike ( there are moving walkways, so that helps).

At the gate there is a security check where the questioning everybody before the carry-on bag check, you aren't allowed any fluids after this point so it's different then in the states where you can buy your drinks after the security check and bring thise deinks onboard. The checkpoint at Schiphol for flights to the US is at the departure gate so if you see a huge line at your gate don't worry that is people waiting for the check...

There are a lot of shops and foodplaces at Schiphol.
If you are a smoker; Schiphol has designated smoking areas so you don't have to go outside.
