Help! My son's birthday is coming up, he's going to be 13! Its a big deal. So i want to buy him something nice. He wants a tablet. Im thinking an ipad-mini or android tablet, like Samsung. Im kinda anti-apple, so im leaning more towards android. But i have to remember this isn't for me. Lol! Which one would you pick for a 13 year old boy?

I got my dd who is also 13 a IPAD for Christmas. It was the ONLY :rotfl:thing she wanted sooo BAD:rotfl:
She loves it.

What does he want to do with it? I have the 7" Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and I like it, though it's sole purpose for me is internet use while traveling. It's only 8GB so you cannot download too many games/apps, even if you add a mini SD because that only allows you to save photos, music, etc.

He basically wants to play games with the tablet and surf the net. That's what he would do with it most of the time.

I will have figure out pros and cons with apple and android. I think with an ipad there is no usb port right?

I have a Samsung Galaxy tab2 and DH had an Ipad. He prefers his, I prefer mine. :lmao: I wanted expandable memory and an Android platform. I've had it since last fall and I use it every day. Mainly I use it to surf the web and the kindle app, but I use the Netflix app a lot when I travel and I've been very happy with it. I actually saw the red version with case at Costco for $199 last week; I think the black was $189.

Thanks for the heads up, I should check out costco. Im still confused as to which tablet to get. I guess I will just shop around and see which is the best deal. Thanks for your help everyone!

I am ipad all the way. I have the 10" screen ipad 2 and love it, love it, love it.

However, if the ipad mini had been available, I might have opted for that one as it is far more portable and fits in my purse rather than needing a larger bag.

I personally would not be interested in an android.

My kids all have Samsung - Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablets. They love them.

Thanks for letting me know. Im kinda leaning more towards that one as its more affordable than an ipad/mini. Plus i personally love the android platform (I have a samsung galaxy s2 phone, so i can attest to the fact that samsung is great). But i have to keep reminding myself that its for HIM, not me. LOL! I will have to compare the specs between the two and see.

I have an iPad. (It was a gift, so I did not have to go through any selection process myself.) I mostly use the internet, a few games, and the book reader. The camera app is fun, and I plan to learn to use the FaceTime app that came with it as well.

It's kind of a silly reason, but I like the iBook e-reader best because of the way the pages turn. It makes me feel more like it's a 'real' book than on DH's Kindle.

Does he have any other apple products? Iphone or iPod? if so, go with the iPad. Any apps downloaded can be shared between them.

I was always anti apple but kids had the ipods and DH had an iphone. I hated it because they could share music, aps, etc but not me. I finally got the iphone and love it. when i travel for work i can facetime the kids.

We have an iPad and an iPad mini and I really love the mini. It's a great size and it's easy to carry everywhere. My son loves all of the apple products the best.

I have serious problems with the Android system. Over 40% of the apps on it have security flaws, some very serious. This is down to an app philosophy of "quantity not quality", most unlike Apple who audit their apps more tightly.

Yes he has an iphone...which is why I think an ipad mini would make sense in his case. Im the one that really wants the samsung tablet. LOL! Your right, he'll be able to transfer all of his iphone apps to the ipad. And i'd definitely be going with the mini. I dont like the size of the reg ipad, i dont think my son does either. You know what? For his birthday i will get him the ipad mini and myself the samsung tablet. Problem solved. LOL!! :lmao:

I love that the ipad mini is so portable! Love the size.

Wow good to know. I didnt know that. Thanks for your input. Something to consider. :scratchin

I love my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7", but if I was buying for my DD I'd go with the iPad Mini because she's had an iPod Touch for years and would strongly prefer a gadget that didn't require the use of a new platform or the re-purchase of apps and media she already bought through iTunes. I haven't had an Apple product and starting from scratch preferred Android, but I think once you get started with one or the other switching over becomes pretty unattractive.

If price is an issue you could always get a refurb? They're cheaper and just as high a quality as a regular iPad, coming with a one year guarantee, new outer shell and new battery.

Example: Refurbished iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular 16GB - Black - Verizon (3rd generation) - $509.

I have a killer idea.

When's your son's birthday? If it's out in time, I could not recommend the Ubuntu Tablet more. Ubuntu Touch is a free version of Linux, a graphical operating system much like iOS and Android. It's extremely pretty, very stable, universally supported and not derived from a media giant like Apple or Google. It's awesome. Check it out here:
