Gluten Free Dining at the Disneyland Resort: A Superthread

Great stuff on here everyone! I was just coming in to browse for a thread like this!

I am Coeliac and visiting for the first time in September. So will have to keep checking on things here until then. Great to know that there are loads of options. Even in Australia it can sometimes be really hard, I find it so helpful when the waiters/chefs actually 'get it' about the no gluten thing!

Thanks for keeping people like me informed!

I don't see Ghirardelli's on the list. Has anyone eaten there? My husband is GF, but I know he was really hoping for a sundae from there if possible...

If the bars are made in a plant that processes wheat it means that they are "low gluten" and not safe for Celiacs -but can be eaten by people just avoiding gluten for other reasons (this from my dd's Pediatric Celiac Nutritionist). Even without stomach complaint from a Celiac it is still causing damage -OK off my soap box now :rolleyes1

Except that something having gluten in it and being safe has nothing to do with the plant and everything to do with the parts per million. Something can EASILY be made in a plant that processes wheat but be gluten free.

Then again, I like to live so that I actually enjoy life and not hate my life every time I have to eat out of the house so...

I am not sure why there is no Ghiradelli's on the list, maybe because they are operated by Ghiradelli and not Disney? Not sure, but in any case, I believe the ice cream and some of the toppings are GF. However, there are some toppings (such as cheesecake bits) that have gluten. Most things should be okay and it is my understanding that Ghiradelli chocolate is GF. Of course, I would ask before ordering.

Thank you! I was just afraid that since they weren't on the list that they didn't say that any of their stuff was necessarily GF! He's not diagnosed-celiac and can take chances with cross contamination, but he prefers not to if possible, because his body does NOT like gluten. (We've discovered in the past year) But his body DOES like ice cream and really good chocolate... (And he doesn't have any trouble staying thin (unlike his wife), so why not??)

According to this list most items are not considered Gluten Free/Safe, as they either share equipment/facility or actually contain Gluten.

It is my understanding that almost all of Ghiradelli's chocolate is made with GF ingredients, but on shared lines. They do wash the lines between batches, or this was the information I was told previously.

Good to know. I'm pretty sure he'll chance SF, though maybe not SE. We'll see when we get there I guess. He mostly doesn't miss gluten, but was kind of mourning the corn dogs today when we were talking about where to eat...

This was my recent experience with GF dining at DCA.

On February 9th I went to DCA with a GF friend. While our group was having a drink in the Carthay Lounge I waited for 30 minutes in line at the Chamber of Commerce where they told me that they no longer give out a list of GF options. The CM explained that this was due to rapidly changing menu offerings and ingredients, and that most places "should have 1 item" available, and that I needed to ask at each location.

Long story short, this put a lot of stress on our group, my friend was reduced to tears, and separated from the group because they felt they were having a negative impact on the rest of the group. I know they shared the Butcher's Plate at Carthay Lounge minus the crackers and then set off alone for lunch. (I ate at Cocina in DCA, and I had to wait 20 minutes just to order, I didn't ask about GF, but I would have been awfully pissed if the answer was they didn't have anything.) Later that day we were walking by Award Wieners and there was a CM out front doing line control. I asked if they had anything GF and she said yes, they have buns, it takes about 10 minutes to get one ready.

Two days later I was back at DCA, I ordered the special Lunar New Year drink at Lucky Fortune Cookery. Now, I honestly didn't expect them to have anything GF (due to soy sauce), but I asked the CM if they had anything GF and she said, "I don't know." I asked if she could find out and she said "I don't think we do." This really annoyed me because what if I had waited in that line for 20 minutes like I had on Saturday to get that answer? I didn't push it because I really hadn't waited in line that day, and I wasn't going to order food anyway.

Five days after that I was DL. (I ate at Jolly Holiday and noticed they took down the sign on the bakery case that said "Gluten Free options available.) I went to City Hall to leave positive feedback for a CM, and I asked again for a GF food list and was told they no longer hand those out. At that point I told the CM what happened in DCA when the CM didn't know what was GF and mentioned that that doesn't work when you're a family and you have to wait 20 minutes in each line to get that answer. The CM seemed very sympathetic and said he wished they had a list, but they're just not doing it anymore. I suggested that they could keep an updated database and print a dated copy on demand whenever a guest asks for it. At the very least they could put a date next to each item to show when it was last verified to be GF and guests could use it as a guideline on where to try to find that item. He suggested I sent an email to DLR and suggest that.

If anyone has had success obtain a list from guest services, please correct me, but as of February 16th I've told twice they are not providing a list any longer.

I wonder if California is really pressing down on placeses selling "GF" to be actually GF (ie not sharing work space, having CLEAN grills ect) this just happened where I live and all of a sudden (for the better for us Celiacs, maybe not so for the intolerants, and people just not eating gluten for whatever reason) alot of places are not on the GF bandwagon anymore. It is SO much safer to eat out in my city now that there is some regulation. Still I am extremely careful -Not sure if it is just Disney that has changed, or all of the State -I do not live there of course, but it is a thought. I sure hope we can eat at sit down resturants when we get there. Any feed back on that.

I think that if you tell them you're GF when you make the reservations for table service then they will be adequately prepared. At least at the table service locations they are much more open to removing items from dishes than at a lot of the counter service locations.

I completely understand why they might not want to hand out a list promising GF items at a location (dated 6 months in the future), give people a sense of security and then have an issue come up. (Cross-contamination in a dedicated fryer comes to mind.) But if that's the case there needs to be more information available from the CMs taking orders, because guests are relying on them to get the right information to the kitchen.

I agree with you - I am gluten intollerant - meaning it bothers me if I eat too much, but I am not out of commission if I eat something that "may contain wheat" - it is something that certainly can have an affect on me though if I do not limit my intake.

For me, I am not too concerned about cross contamination but for true celiacs the last thing you need on your vacation is to get sick!

Dietary restrictions is a giant pain, for those who have allergies or sensitivities and also for many establishments. I think most any place that says they have GF foods, they still come with the disclaimer that while they do their best...stuff happens!

I guess that is why the list is no more - thankfully you can always ask - I found the CMs during our last trip were fantastic - sometimes it took longer, but heh, that was fine with us.

Shailaine -that is our big fear -cross contamination -I am laid out in bed for well over 24 hours from next to nothing, and that is nothing on my kiddo who will end up in hosptial for the same. We will be eating from places made for Celiacs on our entire trip down to Disneyland (driving from Canada) and home, as well as our two days off in the middle of our stay but our 5 days in the "house of mouse" scare us all! Hope we can eat safely!

P.F. Chang's in the Garden Walk have several GF dishes and they were good. I am sure you will find enough but you will have to look for it. If you are driving, there is a Whole Foods about 20 min from DLR that has lots of GF products just for in your room or as snacks. Good luck!

We were there Feb 27th - March 1st. We were sad about them not giving out a list anymore too! That being said, we had a decent time finding stuff DH could eat. We had brought a TON of snacks with us and only ate 4 meals and a couple snacks in the park. There was always someone able to help us; they usually brought the chef out to talk with him. (We only ate counter service) He had a burger (on a GF bun) at the Taste Pilot Grill. He had the pork loin at Flo's (without the Coca Cola BBQ sauce). He had a chocolate chip cookie at Jolly Holiday Bakery (pre-packaged) that was very tasty. And at the Lucky Fortune they brought a chef out both to talk to me (when I was ordering mine and was just asking about GF for him - he was across the way getting the kids' meals) and then to talk to him when he went back to get his food. I think all of their meat/veggies/rice was GF, they said, but none of their sauces. They did have a citrus sauce that could be used as a "dipping sauce," and he ordered that and said it was decent. It wasn't as smooth sailing as we expected, but thankfully we didn't have any bad experiences like a previous poster. :( It was easier for us because as a small family on our own, we worked around what he could eat, and sometimes ordered from different counter service places and stuff. He is not celiac (at least not diagnosed - we will have to have private insurance eventually, and try to avoid official diagnoses for now) but seems to be super sensitive to gluten. It doesn't lay him flat by any means, but it's bad enough that we try to be pretty careful with cross contamination at home and in food choices. He didn't have any stomach issues while we were there, thankfully.

THANK YOU for this thread!!! Our whole family is newly GF and it is HARD to eat out! I was so worried about missing out on everything at Disneyland when we go in Oct.! Thanks to this, I can see we will have to miss out on very little! Even lots of dessert options! YAY!!! :cheer2:

Well, darn it! I am sad to hear they are not offering the GF sheets anymore. And I must have spoken to a misinformed CM, because on my visit in March I asked I they were still available and was told they were! I didn't bother getting the sheets because the ones I have were dated into summer.

I would caution anyone who is in the planning stages to use this as a guide ONLY, since it appears that Disney cannot guarantee suppliers.

It will be more important than ever for GF folks to come back and share their experiences so that we can help each other out.

I think it is strange that DL is not giving out sheets because I thought I had read that WDW had just started giving out sheets for GF very recently. I may also try to email special diets and see if they have recommendations. To those planning trips, you can contact Special Diets by email (address is in first post) and see if they give more information.

I hope we can post our experiences and maybe find a way to organize and link to them in the first post. Let me know if you have ideas or suggestions!

I just spoke to one of the Disneyland Chefs this morning -I feel so much better about it all -he explained to me why they have pulled the sheets but honestly I am not going to get into here on the board. It is just about safety for Celiacs, (of which we have two in our family now). It all made alot of sence to me -anyway, he basically just said that people just need to ask to talk to the chef of "lead" at the counter service or sit down resturant -and for sure if you are making a reservation let them know if you have more than one issue (like my family). Other than that all is good. It would seem, but I am not there of course. I do look forward to hearing what others have to say about their experience before I go as well.

^^ that's how I always understood it to work I didn't know about gluten free sheets until just now.

This way is a lot safer I think because then you're not risking hidden gluten and cross contamination. Also you don't have to find something on the menu at table service restaurants, the chef will come up with something for you. Just be sure to let them know when you make your reservation and again as you're seated. Disney is very accommodating with dietary needs from what I can tell.

I made a last minute walk up reservation at Wine Country Trattoria so I just asked if they had gluten free pasta I could sub and they do. But my waiter really wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to be reactive to any cross contamination by doing that.
