2013 BOOK CHALLENGE! Are you in?

I need to update and keep losing track of my number!

I finished #5 that I was working on - Gift of Fear, Gavn DeBecker - very interesesting read about behavior of criminals and how intuition and true fear can help save you.

I forgot to list #4 - Sara's Game - it was ok, I think it was a PixelofInk book. It was a quick read with lots of action but predictable in spots.

Next up - #6 - The Scorch Trials, Dashner - #2 in YA series after Maze Runner. I didn't like it as much but reserved the 3rd book from our library. The series is about life on earth after dramatic changes and a group of kids who are put through several challenges without knowing their purpose. I look forward to hopefully reading a good ending about the motivation of the group controlling the trials and journey.

Into the Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes.

I'd have to say this is my favorite book so far this year. I was obsessed with reading it. The plot drew me in immediately. Cathy meets the man of her dreams - he's handsome, successful, and her friends adore him. But then things begin to go horribly wrong driving her to the brink of insanity. But nobody believes her side of the story and she is left alone to deal with the madness. The book was gripping and disturbing at the same time. Many times I wanted to fling the book away from me, but yet I couldn't stop myself from reading it every spare minute I had.

I was ready to give this book 5 stars until it ended. I was waiting for some huge twist, but ended up a little disappointed. I don't want to give anything away so I won't say more. But I was one of the few that liked Gone Girl's ending so I guess my preference for endings isn't the norm, lol.

Next up:

#9 Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple

This book has great reviews and has made it to several "top books" lists, but I don't know. So far it's not grabbing me. I do NOT like the writing style at all. It's a mixture of letters, emails, notes, etc. Gosh, just tell me the story like normal authors do!! lol

Anyways, I have a HARD time quitting books. I'll read another 30 pages or so and see how I feel then...

So how was this book? I like her Rizzoli and Isles series.

Keeper of the Bride by Tess Gerritsen
I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads - I liked it but didnt' love it. This one of her early works that is often dubbed a "romance novel" especially because it was published by Harlequin. That being said, the romance didn't bother me or detract from the compelling detective/mystery aspect of the story. Unlike many of her books there is minimal medical information -one character is a nurse but no real medical details. While I like her Rizzoli and Isles books much more, I would not hesitate to read her early works based on my experience with Keeper of the Bride.

Shroud for a Nightingale -- P.D.James

This book was like pulling teeth for me. My first good old fashioned murder mystery --- too old fashioned -- I knew who the killers were before page 50 -- just didn't know why they had done it -- that was revealed in the last 10 pages of the book. Had to make myself finish which is why it took 16 days -- I would pick it up read a few pages then lay it down -- I just kept repeating this pattern til yesterday. SOOOOO glad its done. I have one more book by this author but I'm going to wait on that one for awhile.

I'm starting All the Pretty Girls by J.T. Ellison for my next book.

The Beautiful Creatures series is on Kindle special today for $2.99 each. What do you guys think? should I get all 4 of them? I don't usually like sequels because sometimes I think the author drags out the storyline. I just finish 11/22/63 and loved it and was looking for something a bit lighter and easy read.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the P.D. James book. She's one of my favorite authors. Shroud for a Nightingale was one of her first books; maybe you'd like one of her later efforts more? I did feel that she got better with age. Her latest, I think it's called Death at Pemberly, takes place in Jane Austen's era, with her characters Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy. I love Jane Austen, so this book was a double treat for me.

Just finished defending Jacob- had read it after it first came out, but had forgotten it mostly...lol! Really enjoyed it, but it also made me really sad. Trying to decide what to read next- almost feel like it should be something light and fluffy, everything has been so heavy lately!
That was book #8 for me.

Just finished Defending Jacob. I really enjoyed it. Was surprised by the ending. Didn't see it coming. I give it 4/5.

I'm at deep creek and didn't bring any actual books with me (Killing Lincoln) so I started Reflections in You instead. It will be finished by the time I leave on Monday. According to the "time to left in book" on my kindle I only have 3.5 hours left. Btw, I love that feature!

Book #20 The Litigators by John Grisham
I didn't care of this one 1 1/2 stars - just seemed to drag on and on - feel like it should have been a novella - condensed version of the story may have been easier to swallow. I haven't read a Grisham book in a long time; I was disappointed with this one.

Up next The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson, I loved the first book in the series and I'm looking forward to reading this one.

Death at Pemberly is the other book I have of hers. I love the characters from Pride and Prejudice so I was very excited when I found it. I'm still excited to read it -- just going to read some other stuff first and maybe I can be more fair when I read it.

#13 The Cruelest Momth by Louise Penny. Chief Inspector Armand Gamach and Inspector Jean Guy Beauvoir are called back to Three Pines to investigate the murder of a participant in a seance in a "haunted" house. The story is always good. but I salivate at Penny's descriptions of what they eat! I want to be invited to eat at the homes in Three Pines, and especially at the bistro.

I'm going to get off the Penny train and read something different, but I don't know what yet.
I'm flying back to Washington later this week so I'm saving my friend's book til then.
