Progress of the Triumph

I'm thinking that transferring passengers ship to ship while at sea is a fairly dangerous project, unless done via helicopter or something.

It is a dangerous project. The Navy can do it, but both ships have to be properly equipped, and have to have propulsion. As for helicopters, if they can land on deck, you can transfer a few people at a time. Without ample landing space it's one at a time on a litter or harness, which is not feasible with thousands of people and is a pretty risky maneuver. What would be feasible based on the number of passengers is transferring via boat, but that has inherent danger as well. I would expect if they evacuated that way there would be a number of serious injuries, maybe a death or two. Those are great odds if the ship is sinking, but unacceptable if the worst case scenario is a few days of misery.

0700 Thursday.

The Truimph is supposed to anchor off Dauphin Island, Alablama, late afternoon/ evening and await transit up the river tomorrow morning. One report said 50miles off the Island, but that seems a bit far out.

As far as transfferring passingers in the Gulf or even at anchor, it is not a good idea. It is a dangerous proceedger for exprienced people afloat and a out right hazard for people of various ages, including children.

Carnival is now giving the passingers a extra $500.00. They are chartering flights and said to be paying any unreimbersed travel expenses. There is going to be 200 Carnival employees and volunteers at the terminal to help the passigners. The passingers are going to disembark the vessel head right to buses to NO and then hotel rooms for a day before flying to thier homes.

12 cruises for the Triumph have been canceled(though April). Carnival is said they will pay all unreimbrused expenses including transportation costs.

The National Transportation Safety Administration has now started a full investigation, and along with the USCG. These will likely be tied into other Carnival Inc vessels with smiliar issues and incidents..

I'll Keep you all advised.

What about all the carnival bashing you did earlier in this thread. Now you want to keep this thread on topic after someone said something negative towards DCL?

I think you better go back and reread. No one has written anything but about the vessel, the situation, when shes coming in and the services Carnival is provided. In fact if you read you will see I have been supporting the action Carnival has taken and the reason why..................not once did I or anyone else bash Carnival.

P.S. If you wish to open a thread and discuss Carnival and other lines and their safety records, I will be happy to discuss it there.

They should be able to get in. Up until last year they used to cruise out of Mobile Bay, then Carnival left the city of Mobile high and dry and in debt for a cruise ship terminal.

We are looking forward to showing the passengers some southern hospitality. Hopefully everyone is in good health after this ordeal. There are going to be medical staff available for the passengers as well.

After all the city of Mobile is doing to help out CCL, especially considering their actions mentioned above, this is the kick in the teeth CCL's website has for them this morning, Feb 14 2013.
Nice....not!

Copied and pasted from CCl's main page:

Alabama is nice! But how about a cruise from New Orleans?
Sail from $339 Search Cruises

I'm really hoping Mobile gets another cruise line sailing from their terminal, but I hope it's anything but CCL.

Please this is not a opinion of lines thread............no koolaid, disney lovers, carnival can never do wrong, etc.... names. Just information on the progress of the Trumph and the crew and people ouboard.

As of 0800 this morning, the Carnival Triumph is under way to Mobile, Alabama, towed by 2 tugboats, one from the US and one from Mexico. She had a 4.5 degree starboard list. Due to the currents, winds and drift the vessel was closer to Mobile then Progresso and it makes sense not to fight to wind and current to tow her to Mexico.

She has only emergency power, some lighting, water and limite toilets. Food service is limited due to lack of galley power.

The Carnival Elation and Exstacy has transferred food and supplies to the triumph by meand of lifeboats.

She is expected to arrive at Mobile thursday. The port has a unused cruise terminal which will be available to the passingers and likely provide a good berth for the vessel, while the investigation and determination of what repairs will be needed.

The Mobile shipyard is nearby and has a top notch work force.

As I get more I will pass it on.

I had hoped that the ordeal would be over for these passengers today, but it sounds like tomorrow at the earliest.

I was reading an article online earlier today about the ship being towed to Mobile and the comments on the article were horrible. They were saying awful things like I think I would rather stay on the ship than be towed to Alabama. How extremely ignorant! Mobile is a very nice port city with very friendly people.

I'm a Yank but I have had the pleasure of visiting Mobile several times over the past 20 years. What a beautiful city and wonderful citizens! Very hospitable! The passengers of the Triumph are very fortunate to be entering into that port city.

As a transplanted Moblian- Thanks for the compliment! I do think it is rather ignorant of people to talk about the history of Alabama and the politics when they have never been here. This is a beautiful city with some of the nicest most accepting people I have ever met and I am happy to call it my home.

This was reported earlier about the list:

As for Alabama, I'm sure it's a great place but it does have a reputation from it's past and because of it's current politics. And I'm not going anywhere near those issues.

Just stop and think about the history of any location, anywhere you go you will find political issues- left or right. And our entire country was founded on a history that has been unfair to one group or another. Yes the south has a very marked history but it has also changed.
