The Land, The Sea and The Dark Side ... With a Toddler! The (cruise) TR! 8/27 UPDATE!

Congratulations Shannon {on the morning sickness that is}.

DD got RSV last March, and it turned into double Pneumonia. She was hospitalized for a week, and it was horrible- praying the antibiotics do their job and Cinco gets to feeling better SOON!

Looks like you have a lot on your plate right now, and so from one mom in a similar situation to another...take it one day at a time and prayer does help. Hope your son gets better soon...sending good thoughts!

Thank you so much :goodvibes

Don't worry about this TR, you have more important things to think about. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. I hope things start turning around and 2013 starts better than 2012 ended for you all. :grouphug:

Thank you so much! I am hoping for a kick butt start to 2013 as well ;)

Congratulations Shannon {on the morning sickness that is}.

Thank you Jenn!! Sick babies are the worst :sad1:

Hey y'all, thank you so much for all the thoughts and prayers. It really does mean a lot that so many people I've never met IRL are here to support one another :goodvibes

Just wanted to stop in and give you an update on James.

Unfortunately, he ended up getting much worse. About an hour after I posted my last update he woke up from his nap. He still seemed sleepy and not quite aware of what was going on. I told Candi we should change his diaper, try to feed him and see if he starts responding better and then go from there. As soon as we took off his pants to change his diaper we noticed hives all over his legs. A quick inspection under his shirt and sure enough they were all over his chest and arms (he was wearing long sleeves) as well. A quick run through the house for necessities (insurance card, purse, diapers) and we were off to the hospital. Due to his age and the hives he was taken back immediately. They gave him a dose of steroids for the hives and let us know that we would be hanging around the ER for an hour to keep him under observation. He hadn't started swelling (thank goodness!) so far, but they said it didn't mean that he wouldn't. Once they realized the hives were going down they ran his stats (temperature, blood pressure etc) and noticed that his oxygen levels were low. This wasn't unexpected to me due to the visit to the Dr's office earlier in the day. I let them know about his visit and the nebulizer treatments we were ordered to do. The first thing they asked me is if they had tested him for RSV and when I said no they were livid. They immediately asked who his primary was and when I let them know he didn't see her, but her NP, they practically blew a gasket and left the room. A few minutes later I had to pin my poor baby down while they did the RSV swab (I swear they basically swab your brain from inside your nose :guilty:) and then again while they gave him a dose of Benadryl. At that point he was done with me and only wanted his Dada.

It only took about 30 minutes before they came back and let us know that he tested positive for RSV. They started a breathing treatment with a stronger dose of Albuterol than what we were given and left to call the Ped on duty for the night. From there the waiting game began. The first breathing treatment didn't improve anything, so the Ped ordered 2 more 20 minutes apart. While the second of those was being given his hives started to return, so we were also keeping an eye out for swelling from that. After the third breathing treatment he started to do much better; unfortunately, that was short lived. Less than an hour (they kept him for continuing observation in the ER) after the last breathing treatment his oxygen levels dropped to 79 (at the very minimum they wanted it to be at 90). This earned us a permanent room on the Pediatric floor of the hospital.

So, my baby got to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas day in the hospital :sad1: The first night and next morning he continuously kept going up and down on his oxygen levels. His blood pressure also kept spiking, but I think it was more from being scared than much else. Finally last night they were able to take him off the oxygen and he held appropriate numbers for almost 3 hours! This morning he was slightly low, but was able to hold good numbers with .5 liter of oxygen. They were content with this and released him this evening. He has to be on oxygen around the clock for the next week as well as do 2 breathing treatments each day. He goes in for a follow-up next Wednesday where we will evaluate our next step. It sounds like the option of outcomes is being completely healed and getting to stop all treatments, being improved and continuing with the oxygen/breathing treatments or lowering the quantity of them or if he has not improved or is worse he will be re-admitted for more aggressive treatment. So, we are not in the clear yet. But, since we have been home I have already seen him starting to thrive better. He is asking for food and drink versus us having to bribe him to take it and has even gotten up a few times to play with his toys. I have faith that he will get better, but any continued thoughts and prayers are very much welcomed. As I told Jenn, seeing your baby sick is the worst!

I also wanted to give a quick update on myself.

I hinted at it in my last update, but didn't want to get into the details as I didn't feel they were appropriate with all the other news. But, in the midst of all the chaos we've been enduring we also found out that I'm pregnant :goodvibes According to my calculations I am between 4 and 5 weeks so I know it is very early on, but I made the announcement this early with Cinco as well. I strongly believe the more positive thoughts that are around for the pregnancy the better! I have to schedule my first prenatal visit so I should have an expected due date in a couple weeks. We are all thrilled including James - he goes around saying "sisser, sisser, sisser." I would take it as a sign of this baby being a girl, but he is actually saying Spencer (my Niece's name) as he is convinced that all babies are "sissers" :rotfl:

Thanks again everyone for your kind words and thoughts. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday spent with your loved ones!

Congratulations! Sorry that your baby boy is sick...it reminds me of my son at 1 1/2 months old had pneumonia and my daughter had a febrile seizure at 9 months. Both times equally scary, but like you, I had faith that they will be okay. I am sure that positive thinking can effect the outcome of health, so here are some more happy thoughts :goodvibes
Keep us updated on your health and lil mans!

How scary. I hope James continues to get better. Fantastic news on the new baby!

I'm so sorry to hear about James having to go into the hospital. Poor little guy! Glad to hear he's starting to do better. Will keep him in my prayers.

And I'm really sorry to hear about Candi's cousin.

On a lighter note....a big Congrats on your pregnancy! :goodvibes

I'm so sorry Shannon- that is the WORST!

When DD got RSV, it was horrible. She went from just being congested with a low fever to completely lethargic with a 104.5 fever instantly. We spent a week in our children's hospital and since she was RSV + she couldn't leave the room.

I strongly agree with you that Cinco being home will make him better! When DD left the hospital her oxygen stats were still low (but they made us not focus on the machine and focus more on her and her signs/breathing) and I swear the minute we walked in the door she was instantly better! Finally getting to take a real bath in the bath tub was hug for her- being home really is the BEST medicine!

Many prayers for him- and please keep us posted!

AND of course congratulations on your new little one!!! I am SO excited for you!

Hey all! I know it has, once again, been weeks since my last update. Things just never seem to slow down around here. A couple of quick life updates and then I want to jump back into the TR.

James is doing much, much better. Since he was removed from his oxygen he has seen the Doctor twice and there are no longer any signs of the RSV or low oxygen levels! Thank goodness! We are still requested to give him the nebulizer treatments if he gets extremely coughy and/or mucusy. To date we have had to do that once. There are not words for how extremely happy this makes me. I also have to say, that it has turned me into a complete worry wart and I have to make a conscious effort to not be overly paranoid now. Every single time he exhibits even the slightest sign of a cold I go into a panic that the RSV is coming back. Oy! Thank you again to everyone for your continued thoughts and prayers for my little boy :goodvibes

On the pregnancy front, I still battle daily nausea/morning sickness (which by the way should be called evening sickness in my case). It is such new territory to me because I only had one day of sickness with James. I constantly tell James (jokingly) "you need to teach your little brother or sister to play nice." I had my first prenatal visit (finally!) on January 23 where in addition to all the lovely lab tests I got my first ultrasound. Nothing beats seeing that tiny heart flickering on the ultrasound screen! My due date is August 31 so I was pretty accurate in my predictions of how far along I was early on. My next appointment is February 22 where I will get to hear the heartbeat and I have about 11 weeks to go until we find out if a little boy or girl will be joining our family.

One quick side story - we took James in the room for the ultrasound and when we pointed to the large TV they projected it on and told him that was his baby brother or sister he got the biggest smile and started doing his "Happy Feet" dance. Melt my heart!

Now back to the trip report...

Glad to hear that James is doing much better!

But, I'm sorry you're still having morning sickness. I hope it goes away soon for you. How exciting and sweet about the 1st ultrasound and James being there. :goodvibes

Thanks so much! Ginger Ale has become my new BFF :rotfl: It's as I tell my Hubs and Sis all the time when they ask how I'm feeling "I'm exhausted, naseaus, already having trouble sleeping, repulsed by most foods .... and loving every minute of it!"

I'm going to be honest, I didn't keep notes for this day (or any of the rest going forward) and since we tend to laze around a lot on Sea Days I don't have a clear memory of everything that occurred. I'll use my pictures as a guide, but it's clear that there is a huge chunk of time that no pictures were taken :scared1:

We had crawled into bed around midnight the previous night after a full day at Key West, an amazing dinner at Palo, a not-so-amazing time at Flounder's Reef and ending the day cuddling on loungers watching a movie on the funnel vision. After such a packed day, I'm pretty sure all of us were looking forward to the Sea Day - no alarm clocks, no excursions, no obligations - bliss!

If memory serves correctly we didn't make any plans to meet up for breakfast, had only discussed taking Cinco to the kiddie splash area for a while at some point in the day. I know for certain we woke up when James did which was later in the morning and for that we were thankful. After getting up and dressed I went next door to knock on my parents door and didn't find them there (this could be incorrect :confused3). Knowing that James needed to eat we headed off to the buffet to fill our tummies where, I believe, we ran into my parents enjoying breakfast as well.

If we didn't meet up at the buffet I know that my parents were in their room when we returned. I went next door to let them know that we were going to get James ready to head down to the splash area and they said they definitely wanted to join us.

James had an absolute blast playing in the water and just being allowed to run around and do whatever he wanted. Pure toddler paradise as far as he was concerned! And, seeing the joy on his face reminded me that this is what the vacation was all about.

I do have to say I have one gripe. Because of his age and not being potty trained he was not allowed to go into any of the regular pools. I get that - they are trying to avoid any accidents and having to close down the pools. It's a bummer but I understand and that's not what upsets me. What does upset me is that while we were playing in the splash area (close to 2 hours) one of us had to grab James from getting trampled from big kids at least a dozen times. I'm not talking kids that were close to his age and just bigger than him. I'm talking 10, 11, 12 year olds that were clearly too big to be in the toddler area and were not paying attention to all the little kids who were in there. In my opinion, if the toddlers can't go in their area than they shouldn't be allowed in the toddlers area. It's too small of an area and it isn't safe. James had just started walking full time at that point so his balance wasn't that great and there were kids in there younger than him who were still crawling. Very unsafe and unfair!

Moving on. As stated we spent close to 2 hours just allowing James to run around and do whatever he felt like - which was mostly run in circles around Sorcerer Mickey's hat and then run to the other end and stick his face in the fountain spouting out of the ground. Good times!

From here I know for sure we went back to the room to change and I'm almost certain I would have given James a bath to get all the chlorine off of him. At that point I can't remember if we all stopped to take a nap or not. Based on the timeline I'm almost thinking that we didn't or, if we did, it was for a short time. Regardless, at some point after we all went to lunch. Candi and I were thinking of just hitting the buffet, but my Mom had requested we do a sit down and order meal instead. We chose Lumiere's for this - not sure if it was the only option, but I'm almost certain that Parrot Cay was open as well.

On our way to lunch Candi and I stopped at the DVC desk to pick up or swag of the day. I think this day we had to answer a trivia question to receive it and Candi was the one who got it right :thumbsup2 While we were at the desk my parents decided to inquire about receiving more information about DVC to see if it was a good fit for them. Once they got all set up we made our way down the elevators to lunch.

When we entered the restaurant we were excited to see our Assistant Server, Ramon, in there. He seemed just as excited to see us and immediately sat us and asked us if our drink options were the same for lunch as dinner. When he returned with our drinks he made the comment "I guess you guys skipped the buffet since you aren't seafood fans huh?" Poor, poor Candi, I'm pretty sure he was holding back tears as the seafood buffet was basically number one on his list of hopes for this trip. I whispered to him that we could hop over there instead but he said it wasn't a big deal and he wanted to spend time with my family.

I don't recall what we had for lunch but I do remember all of us enjoying it. Towards the end of the meal my Dad asked my Mom what time they were supposed to do their DVC meet and she said she thought it was at a certain time. My Dad looked at his watch and it was already past that time; I guess my Mom hadn't adjusted her watch for the new time zone. She started to get upset and I told her it was not a big deal, to find her card they wrote on to see, they would be happy to reschedule or there was a big meeting in the lounge coming up in a few minutes. When she pulled out the card she realized that they had signed her up for the group meet after they had talked about a few different times that might work. I guess she just got confused with all the times they talked about. At that point we semi-rushed to finish lunch so that they could get there in time. Since it was open to anyone Candi and I decided to join as well. I wanted to see if there was any secret information being revealed about the Grand Floridian DVC and Candi was hoping we could get lucky enough to win the door prize. It was an onboard credit - $300 I believe.

We got there just a few minutes past the starting time and when they had us sign in Candi and I got some extra swag for already being members. We made our way inside and found a seat to listen to the rest of the presentation. A few minutes in James started getting fussy (which makes me almost positive we didn't nap before lunch) so Candi said he was going to take him back to the room to lay him down. I decided to stay behind with my parents and Candi told me if they were offering sign on incentives to sign us up to talk to someone  The presentation didn't have any information I didn't already know but I was chosen to answer a question and received a prize for it. When I leaned over I could see that my Dad was making notes fast and furiously so I knew he was strongly considering if DVC was right for them. At the end of the presentation they made one last round to make sure everybody had turned in their forms for the door prize drawing. When he pulled the card he said "the winner is from Wichita, KS" and I got so excited (that's where my parents are from) but then it was somebody else. Small world and kind of a bummer. But, Congrats to fellow Kansans :thumbsup2

After the DVC presentation I signed Candi and I up for after dinner to find out more about the bonus for adding more points and then headed back to the room. To be honest I have no idea what my parents did and I'm pretty sure we didn't see them again until right before dinner. In fact, I cannot remember a single thing that happened from that point until we started getting ready for show....

I love reading about your trip! James is so cute! You are right the cubby hands just make ya melt! I am glad to know he is feeling better:) as a pediatric intensive care RN, i see lots of RSV this time of year. It is bad. Poor guy!! Congrats on the new addition. :cheer2: Cant wait to hear more!!

Sounds like y'all were having a nice, leisurely day! :thumbsup2

The pictures of James in the splash area are so cute! And I agree with you - the splash area should have an age limit. If I remember correctly from when we sailed on the Dream, that one does have a maximum age. But, don't quote me on that.

We went on a Magic cruise last May as well. We put our six month old in the nursery twice and had a bad experience as well. We ended up showing up early the second time and found her laying on the floor sobbing while everyone ignored her. We didn't go back.

We are taking another cruise on the dream this may and our daughter will be 18 months. I am hoping it goes better.

Thank you so much :goodvibes Major kudos on being a PIC Nurse. I can't imagine how both, rewarding and emotional, of a job that must be :thumbsup2

I absolutely cannot wait to sail on the Dream for the Nemo themed splash zone. Although at that point James will be potty-trained I'm sure the next little one will love it!

I'm so sorry to hear you had such a bad experience with the nursery as well :sad2: I was really hoping our situation was a one-time fluke as I know that isn't the type of service that Disney expects or promotes of it's CMs. I'm not going to lie - it is going to be hard for me to give them a second chance on our next cruise. James will be old enough to go to the Oceaneer's Club (Lab?) but we will have the new one who will need to go to the nursery. ::nervous::

After leaving the DVC presentation my parents and I split up to all do our own thing. I know that I went back to the room to check on the boys; and, if I recall correctly they weren't napping but were just laying around watching TV and playing. If memory serves, we ordered some room service - random things including the cheese plate, my fave! - while I got our clothes out and ready for the evening. Tonight was semi-formal night which meant a trip to the laundry room was in order to get all of our clothes ironed. I think I also checked on available washers as we were in need of some clean clothes, but as expected, they were all taken. Once all the clothes were ironed I laid them out so that we could quickly change after the show. This was the one night I was really hoping to get some good pictures in the lobby so I wanted the process of changing and getting in line for pictures to go smoothly (and quickly).

As an aside, we never wore our dinner clothes to the show. Since we usually got snacks/drinks I was always worried we would spill and ruin them before it was time to go to dinner. Since there is enough time between the two, we chose to just change every night before dinner.

A few minutes before we needed to get to the theater we met up with my parents to make sure we could get seats together. Tonight's show was "Twice Charmed" another first for us. I think this is the show I was most excited for and it didn't disappoint! I was completely engaged from start to finish and was so glad I got the chance to see it. Cinco, however, did not agree with me and got fussy towards the middle of the show. At first he was distracted with the Mickey crackers we got for him. But, that novelty soon wore off and Candi had to take him out to the hallway to avoid him disrupting others. They did make it back in for the show's finale, but since he missed about 15 minutes of it, Candi wasn't quite as taken with the show as I was.

Once the show ended we let my parents know we were going to run to change and then head to the lobby for pictures. They decided to hit the gift shops to look around while we did that, as they weren't interested in any pictures for themselves.

When we got back to the room to change James was being stubborn and having a fit about putting his vest on. The show situation and this should have been major red flags about his mood. But, I was so set on taking pictures that I thought for sure he would be fine once we got back out of the room.

We got to the lobby and looked at the background offerings for the night and chose the one we liked best. It was the nighttime cruise backdrop and yes, it's slightly cheesy, but we still love it;) The line was somewhat long, but seemed to be moving quickly so we jumped in, knowing we had limited time before we had to be to dinner. As we moved along in line James became more and more active and fussy. He was refusing to be held, but wouldn't stay near us when we let him down to move around. He kept trying to run off and Candi was getting frustrated that he wasn't listening and wanted to just leave the line and forget about the picture. I'm sad to say that things just spiraled downward from there. The next time James started to run off Candi snapped at him, so I snapped at Candi and grabbed the baby and told Candi (I admit, with attitude) that he was just a baby and wanted to walk that he should just stay in line and I would move around with James. I quickly picked up the baby and took off towards the open area of the lobby to let him run around. Well, the baby was none too pleased that I picked him up and started screaming bloody murder. I'm talking the ear piercing, great big crocodile tears, the world is going to end tantrum type screaming. I moved as quickly as I could to let him down, but the damage was done. He was mad, he was tired, he could sense my frustration and his Dad's frustration and he was done for. Nothing I did from that point changed anything. Not letting him down, not taking him over to the windows, not pointing out the characters. Nothing!

At this point I was ready to call defeat and tell Candi to get out of line when one of the Ship Officers (is that the correct term?) came over to talk to James. I'll admit I was more than slightly embarrassed and, at first, was thinking of any way possible to quickly get out of the conversation :guilty: He was so incredibly nice to James though. He tried doing high fives with him. That didn't work. He tried peek-a-boo. That didn't work. He tried silly faces. That didn't work. At this point I was fighting back tears so hard and I think it was completely noticeable. The Officer told me to wait one second that he would be back. He came back out a minute later with a box of kleenex and told James to take as many as he wanted. If you know toddlers they love to pull wipes out of their container, kleenex out of the box etc. James all of a sudden stopped crying, and looked at me for confirmation that this was ok, but was too hesitant to actually grab one. So the Officer said, well maybe Mommy can show you how it's done. And told me to teach him. Secretly, I think he knew I needed one to dry my own eyes and didn't want to embarrass me. Once I grabbed one that was all James needed. He then reached his little hand out and shrilled with laughter as he pulled out his own. The Officer told him "you need more than one grab another" and so he did. They went back and forth on this for at least 10 kleenex. So much so, that James couldn't stop laughing when they were done. I will forever be grateful for that kind, kind gentleman and what he did for us that evening. Of course, in my current state I didn't even think to grab his name.

AB1_3364.jpg

My parents took this picture at some point - the Gentleman who saved our night is the one on the end next to my Dad.

I repeatedly thanked the Officer for his kindness (and took my Dad's camera with the above image to the Guest Services desk at the end of the cruise to tell them my experience and how incredible he was) and headed back to the line to find Candi. When we got there we were only 3 people back in line. I apologized for my attitude and told Candi all about what just happened. He said he could see us talking to him and was happy to see James laughing and calmed down. Out turn in line came very quickly after that.

DMG-120521-Ship8x10-43973.jpg

When we looked at our pictures that night Candi apologized for getting frustrated over taking them. That he is glad I remember to push to capture the memories and have "such an obsession" over pictures because time really does move quickly and it's so easy to forget how little Cinc used to be. As a side note, this picture is now enlarged and hanging over Candi's desk at work :thumbsup2

By the time we finished up with our pictures it was time to head into dinner. It was a quick hop over as we were in Triton's tonight. I was so happy our rotation had us here for semi-formal night, it really does help to set the mood! As always, the service was great and we all enjoyed our dinner. And, I'm thinking food was part of everyone's foul mood as we all had much bigger smiles after the food hit our bellies!

With dinner complete we had two more things we needed to accomplish that night...

Just subscribed. I have a little one that I'm hoping someday we can take on a DisCruise. We had one booked for May but had to cancel because daddy got deployed. Keeping my fingers crossed and living vicariously through your TR.

That was so nice of the officers to try and help with James! You did end up with some nice family photos! :thumbsup2

Wow ... 6 months since I've updated this TR ...how is that even possible? In so many ways it feels like those months have flown by in the blink of an eye. And, in others, it seems like time completely stood still.

I do desperately want to finish this TR for so many reasons. Mostly because it was my little man's first Disney trip and I never want to forget those memories. Sadly, I fear that some of them have already been forgotten since it has taken me so long to get it in writing :sad1:

I am currently uploading the remainder of the pictures to my Photobucket account (yep, over a year since the trip and that hasn't even be completed) and then I plan on hopping in full force to get this done. If for no other reason, so that it's there for me to look back on.

So, what have we been up to since February?

We celebrated Easter - which was a big hit for James. He loved everything about it from getting to dressed up, to going to Church to hunting for Easter eggs.

My belly started to grow

We found out that our sweet little nugget is a baby girl!

Then just a few weeks later (on Mother's Day) we got one of the biggest scares of our lives when we thought we were going to lose our sweet Eliana. I spent 4 weeks on bed rest praying daily that she would pull through and allow us the blessing of having her here on Earth with us. It was a long, trialing, emotional moment in time for our family. Not only did we have to live day by day waiting to hear how our baby girl was doing, I had to also deal with James being away from me 4 days a week because I couldn't care for him while Candi was at work. Then for another 4 weeks following my bed rest I couldn't lift him, run around with him, lay on the floor and play with him ... definitely the moments when it seemed like time just stopped and nothing seemed real. Thankfully with a lot of prayers and faith everything healed itself and our little Ellie is continuing to grow and thrive in my belly.

In the midst of that we celebrated Father's Day

Grandma came to visit ... and help out ... and fly kites

And once we got the all clear we threw caution to the wind and started treating every day possible as a celebration.

We had ice cream dates

And baseball dates

And movie dates

And lunch dates

And shopping dates

Heck, we even played in the rain

And had lots and lots of snuggle time

At one point we even packed up and got away for a few days (I'm hoping to do a mini-TR of this as it was such a special time for our family)

Through all that the tummy continued to grow and grow and grow

And I truly am thankful for each and every inch and pound because it reminds me that our little girl is also growing

And, in a very quick, short synopsis that brings us to now. Where we are counting down the days until Eliana makes her big debut. Only 4 days away from my due date!

Oh and we might be counting down the days to something else too ...

So Glad to hear that everything is okay!! Love the pictures of James and can't WAIT to see your pictures of little Eliana!

Congratulations again!
