I'm sure this topic has been done a million times but I am assuming we won't be able to use our phones or have wifi? I'm sailing May 10th on the Magic.

WiFi is available on the ship for a cost ($$$). Your Phone will work, but you will be roaming on Cellular at Sea while on the ship. In port, you will be roaming on what ever network your carrier has a roaming agreement with.

The ship has wifi at a cost and cellular is @.49/min by cellular at sea:thumbsup2

I believe Cellular at Sea is $2.49 per minute on most carriers for voice calls and data is charged as used. Check your carrier's coverage areas but you should be able to get cell phone service while in port in Key West and Miami. Nassau would be a roaming area with international charges on most plans.

Thanks! Any idea about how much wifi would be? I can talked pretty fast for $.49 a minute

WiFi pricing on cruises of seven or more days is as follows:

Pay as you go - $0.75 per minute
100 min for $55.00 ($.55 per minute)
250 min for $100 ($.40 per minute)
500 min for $150 ($.30 per minute)

Another wifi option is to find places in port. Other DIS'ers will know places in the ports, so will CMs onboard.

Are these areas free?

Does anyone know if you need to put the international plan on for Bahamas or cruising in general? I have AT&T. I'm not looking to actually use the phone, but in case of emergency I usually add the international plan so I can use it if needed.

I have the Standard International Roaming from AT&T on my line. It's free and will allow you to use your phone if necessary at roaming rates. I also turn off International Data Roaming on my iPhone so I don't get any unexpected data usage. I leave my phone on and don't have any unexpected charges on my wireless bill.

BTW, wifi at sea is TERRIBLY slow. You cannot do skype or any wifi based voice calls. Also, there's almost no free wifi at any ports today.

Nassau for example has, but it's almost useless. Your best option is to find a local place or coffee shop (ie Starbucks) - if you buy something, they will give you a wifi code good for the day.

These rates are for using WiFi on your own device (ipad or iphone/smartphone), correct? What about the internet cafes/computers on board the ship? Is the pricing for those the same? Are all WiFi packages pre-paid?

Can I ask...if not by cell phone, how do most people communicate while at sea w/family?

Do you mean with family back home or family with you? Back home, most people don't at all. Maybe an email or two, or check in with free wifi in a port. As for family traveling with you, dry erase boards on doors work well and you can leave cabin to cabin messages on the phone.
