Nemesis Challenge 2

Throwing this out there to any N.E./CT DADS.....

On Saturday March 23, 2013 there is a 5K run in Hartford, CT at 10am. This run is to benefit the families directly affected by the tragedy in Sandy Hook. It is being called Sandy Hook: Run for the families.

If there is anyone interested please let me know. We could create our own team and run as a group, or run individual. After the run we could go grab some lunch and have a beer. Unfortunately, I can't hang out all night, I have to work but I should be available till 3 or 4.

There are 6500+ people signed up and they are expecting over 10,000 runners. According to their website there are going to be 3 separate self-seeding corrals. Not sure what the times will be but I could imagine sub 8min, sub 10min, everyone else. Believe me, it is going to be a cluster at the beginning but it will be a good experience for all you running dads to get a race under your belt. :goodvibes

Ok, I'm in! Trying to register. Do we have a team yet? I could create one. How about the Biergarten Bums?

Alright, I pulled the trigger and registered. Team name: Biergarten Bums

Just booked a room at Saratoga Springs for January 8th - 14th of next year. Hoping to switch to either BLT (convenience for Bambi and the kids to get over to MK by 6:00am then to Epcot for the finish) or OKW (to save some DVC points).

Anyone else going to be in Disney World that weekend? ;)

Would that be marathon weekend?:confused3 If yes, then I am planning to be there running or not(still working on the leg). If not, then no. I'm pretty sure I would be divorced if I planned to be there twice in January.:lmao:

Yes, that's marathon weekend. The half marathon is January 11th, where I'll be defending my crown as Nemesis Challenge Champion.* This thread was getting a bit stale and I thought I'd try to inject a little bit of life into it.

*There is no actual crown. But there should be.

I haven't decided where I will be staying yet.I was kind of waiting to see where the crowd was staying and then I would decide.

Well then, YES, I plan to be in attendance. Not sure where I would be staying yet as I will be traveling solo unless I can convince grandma to take the kids. I don't have DVC:sad2:, so where would you suggest is the best to be around the guys?

I'm not sure if I'll be going or not. I've been 3 years in a row and DW would like me to take a break from it. I might wind up going down for a quick solo trip.

How far in advance do you need to book a place for marathon weekend? Also, with the 1/2 marathon on the 11th...what sort of things lead up to that and when should someone plan to actualy get into town?? Shari and I will be making a quick trip without the kids.:rolleyes1

Well the dvc filled up pretty quick once the registering for the marathon n opened. Not sure about other resorts. I am also waiting to see what others decide to do as far as getting in town and length of stays. I am thinking though for me I might get in on thurs and leave sunday night. kind of the same as I did for the convention. But I guess a lot of it will depend on how long others are planning to stay

Well, it sounds like I will be there. Most likely solo-ish. DW's 60+ year old aunt has decided that she is running the half with me. This is before I had actually decided for sure that I was going to run so I guess that means I'm running. She is not a runner but is super fit. She teaches about 15 Zumba classes a week.

So I will be there but probably w/o the family this time. Hopefully she will take someone with her. The reason she's going is because she has never been to WDW. I will be either staying solo at a value or looking for a roomie. Or if I get my way booking something via my own DVC points although that's along shot at this point.

Not really sure. It's still pretty far out for people to be planning and booking, but I like to book as soon as I have my dates set so I don't forget later. :lmao:

I'll be there teaching some kid a lesson!

Marathon weekend is pretty popular, although 2014 probably won't be quite as big as 2013 since it's not a big anniversary or anything (last year was the 20th anniversary of the Marathon, so Disney did a huge marketing push). Registration opens in early April, so I'm guessing that's when a lot of people start booking rooms. Doesn't hurt to already have a room when that rolls around. If I am remembering correctly, Disney pretty much sold out every room in its inventory that weekend.

(Everything from here down is based solely on my experience this year. Disney has been known to change how things work, but this will give you a good idea of what's going on)

As far as other things going on - there are really only 2 things you need to do. Pick up your race packet and run the race. Packet pickup is done at the Health and Fitness Expo at ESPN Wild World of Sports. This year, packet pickup ran Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Clearly, Saturday will be too late to pick up your race packet, so you will need to do that Thursday or Friday. Disney has buses running from all Disney Hotels to ESPN, but not to/from the theme parks. You can also drive there and park for free, but it's a mad house. Both times I was down there this year the parking lot was full, overflow parking was full and they were parking people in overflow overflow parking. Basically, Tampa.
Anyway, your race packet consists of 3 things - your race bib, the commemorative long sleeve t-shirt, and a large, clear plastic bag. (The bag is for race day bag check. Put anything in it that you will want immediately after the race. A change of shoes, socks, etc.) The bib gets pinned to your shirt, and the commemorative shirt is for wearing constantly after the race, on the plane ride home, at work for the next week or so, etc.
The Expo is also where you would change your corral assignment if you want to submit a time from a 10k or longer race that your run after November 1.

Saturday is race day. If you're staying at a Disney hotel, you should be on the bus by 3-4am. If you're off-site and driving plan a little more time than that. 20,000+ people are descending upon Epcot and many of the roads on property are closed.
I wouldn't fly out on Saturday after the race. Being squeezed into a cramped airplane seat can be very bad for your legs after that much work. So if you wanted to make a very quick weekend out of it, you could fly down Friday morning and back home on Sunday.
But what's the fun in that? With this many DisDads coming down, there is bound to be something EPIC going to happen. :thumbsup2

The timing sounds about right. I was thinking Thursday to Sunday as well and will most likely be solo or maybe with DS (not sure I can get him out of school for the couple of days). Depending on flight costs, may stay another day or two. From here it may be less expensive to fly out on a Monday/Tuesday. I'll check when the flight windows open.

We've done Marathon weekend as an adults only trip for the past 3 years. So far we've stayed in the Contemporary in 2011 (non anniversary year), POR in 2012 (half marathon anniversary) and Polynesian in 2013 ( marathon anniversary). We usually work with a travel agent for these trips as our agent's agency usually books a block of rooms at a group rate that has a pretty substantial discount. In 2011 we didn't book until August or September. In other years we've booked earlier as our agent usually sells out of their discounted rooms. For two of the trips we've travelled down on Friday and come back on Monday and on one trip we went down on Thursday and came back on Monday. For me I would rather have more time after the race than before the it. The day before a race I have to watch what I eat, after a race I tend to relax and enjoy things more.
