Question about wines in the Mara:

Does anyone know the price ranges, and does anyone have any recommendations? I cannot drink white wine, so I need to stick with reds... Any favorites? Planning waaaay ahead for our August 2013 stay...

Thanks!

Ugh! How did I forget to take that tour?!?!?

I'm really mad at me.

Perhaps you were commandoing in the park? :rolleyes1

Is it (the Culinary Tour) still offered for free? I noticed a "for fee" symbol next to it, on our Activities Schedule for our Marathon weekend (2013) stay? We never had time to check it out, but I'm wondering if there is now a fee for this tour? Thanks!

Yes, I did it today. Just show up at the Boma podium at or a little before 4PM. We got a taste of Soup and a ZD, then they took us over to Jiko for a taste of their bread and dip service. Just like everyone has reported. I'm glad I finally got to do it!

Awesome, Alison! Glad you and Fran are getting to experience the *wonderfulness* of AKL/AKV!! :cloud9:

Since you are staying at Kidani, you and Fran should try the Culinary Tour at Sanaa and, of course, report back.

Oh, that's terrific! Soup, zebra dome, bread and dip. Heaven!
Really need to make a countdown ticker.
Thanks so much!

No more time left. :sad2: Tomorrow is our last night and then we head to BLT. But I heard that the one at Sanaa is a "cultural tour" not "culinary". I will report on the "night vision" tour. I need to get going to wake Fran up so that we can report for that one!

I can't wait to hear about the night vision tour! Is it a tour or do they just lend out night vision goggles? My DS (7) loves animals and will love this. Are there any other animal experiences/tours at AKL that a 7 year old can participate in? My DH or myself would join him, of course!

The night vision viewing is in an area just past the smaller spa. You stand there and look at the Savana with the goggles. The CMs there are very nice & great to talk with. One was from Ghana, the other from Entebbe. They very very nice.

There is also a new night vision safari. It is for guests 8+ and is ~$75 per person with a portion going to the conservancy fund. Here is my DD (12) Reilly's TR on it.

Heather

The night vision safari is extremely fun! I went on it with my dad, and we had a great time. We had to be at the Kindani Village by 9:45. We had a bit of trouble arriving there; the instructions on getting there were foggy. After we arrived (at Sanaa, the Indian restaurant), we checked in and waited for about five minutes. A guide came and escorted us to the safari truck outside. The guide (Jay) made us all feel at home by telling us a little about him. He worked at SeaWorld for 20-ish years, then came and worked here at Disney for 4 years. We came out to one of the plains behind the Village, then Jay handed out the night vision goggle-type-things- which were basically were glorified binoculars- and explained how to use them. The truck started up again and we were on our way, feeling heavily like secret agents. The night vision goggles allowed us to see wildebeest love in the distance. It was disturbing. (that was my dad, putting in his unneeded two cents) Now where was I? Oh, yes. We drove through a gate, then another. Jay told us that was just in case an animal did manage to get through, it could be stopped. He told us a story of a giraffe which waited by the gate, and would try to storm it. At that point, I started to get a little chilly. There's a word of advice; bring a jacket and/ or a blanket. We drove through the other set of double gates and went on our way. Zebras were the next sight we saw. Some sort of "Mountain zebra"; I'm not really sure. A bunch of antelope creatures, some ostriches, then back to zebras. A little pause with no animals, then more zebras. Right next to our truck. It sounds like a cliché, but they were so close if I reached out my hand I could have touched the nearest one. Giraffes came next, four of them. Two laying down, two standing up. As we slowly drove by, three of the four were looking at us. The other one? Staring up at the sky, and licking the tree it had decided to wrap its neck around. We did a loop, and went past a pond with a lot of birds. The types? Um... I'm not actually sure. Some type of pelican, I believe. We re- did the loop and went back around. As we got closer to Kindani, it got quite a bit colder. I think it was mostly the windchill. All in all, the night vision safari was a fun and educational expierence. I would definitely do it again.

I'm not sure that your son could do any of the tours at the resort yet. I think there is a minimum age and that might be 16, but don't quote me. I don't have kids so I don't really pay attention to those sorts of details. This was a safari on a truck on the grounds of the resort, but he could certiainly go to the outloook and use the night vision goggles there.

We've done that, too & it was awesome!

But Alison and Fran are taking the Night Vision Safari! It sounds really cool!!! Can't wait to read all about it. :goodvibes

Js and Ks,
We just got back from this and it was an awesome experience. There were supposed to be four people on our safari, but the other two didn't show up, so we had our own private safari! It was cold, so a lot of the animals had gone back to the barn, but we had a great time.

I will report more over here once I get to that part of my TR, but if you have specific questions, I will do my best to answer them!

Hello to all :) :) We will be traveling to AKV Kidani Savannah view, staying in a studio. It is for my 36th birthday and it will be my 3yoDD, my DH and me :) I cannot wait. We will check in on 2/23 & out on 2/25. There is so much info on these threads and I'm sure the answer I'm looking for is out there, but I'm going crosseyed reading all of this - LOL :) At any rate, this will be a surprise for my DD and I would like to have the best Savannah view possible from our balcony. Can anyone suggest what floor and room would be best for this? I would prefer a dedicated/non-connecting studio room; they seem to be quiter :) Also what is the difference between a deluxe studio a studio, if any? Any help here is much appreciated!! thank you :)_

I'm sure you'll get better answers than mine, but I can tell you that it seemed like huge groups of animals were always on the Kidani side of the Sunset Savannah. :goodvibes

I hope you have a wonderful trip!!! :cloud9:

I'm definitely jealous re : private safari. Especially as I was supposed to go with DD and not DH. After a concussion though, DS was 'mommy needed ' so I sent them. Can't wait till October when we go back. Is it wrong to book both night vision and sunrise?
