WISH Away the Pounds--January 2013 challenge--Everyone Welcome!

Ok, the final result is in. I weighed this morning and finally the scale did move a little bit!! The total result for January for me is 4 pounds. Which is one pound less than my goal.

But overall I am happy with that and I know from the past that about a pound per week is my usual average. If I can maintain that speed up until my trip, it will put me firmly in the "normal" BMI range by then as well as past one huge milestone which I haven't been able to cross since the last millenium! So I will focus on that - but still aim to be even a little bit better!

So with that, I decided to set my goal again at 5 pounds. Maybe February will be a better month and if not, I will just be happy with every single pound I lose!

I tried the plank again. Managed to hold it for one minute - but with a lot of difficulty and having to readjust my back again and again. Just as Pam said I tended to go up with my butt.

Rose, thanks for the warning about doing it right. Getting your back straight for this is truly the big challenge as I see how you need to use all your core muscles for that.

Good morning all! :goodvibes

Welcome to the last day of the January 2013 WISH Away the Pounds Challenge!

Time flies when you are having fun. ::yes::

Please be sure and PM your final weigh-in to Rose today by 5 p.m. CST so she can update the first post and we can see all the pretty colors. :rainbow:

I thought that it would be fun to reinstate our old tradition for the final day of the challenge with the QOTD today.

QOTD Thursday, January 31, 2013: Please say something nice about the person who posted ahead of you. :flower3: If someone has already said something about the person ahead of you go back until you find someone new so we catch as many folks as possible.

It's been a lot of fun coaching this week. Don't forget to join the new thread. Although you are PM'ing your final weights to Rose you will still need to PM me with your starting weight and goal -- it's easier for the hostess if we start fresh! :thanks:

I have Flossbolna aka Magdalene. Magdalene sets a great example with all the walking and healthy living that she enjoys. She shows great determination and persistance, even when things aren't going the way she hoped. She is going to make a great coach during our next challenge. And she has a really cool picture in her avatar! :cool2:

So I just did my plank for the day and I think I need to modify my goal. I managed 30 seconds. So I'll add a second a day and then by the end of February I'll be up to a full minute.:cool1:

This is a great plan! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the pep talk ladies. I hope a Woosh is around the corner.

Question:
Do you think that your mental state can effect weight loss? I don't mean like long term like being a negative nelly or having depression, ugh how do I explain this??? More like being in a mental funk.
Today I have had an off day, just in a funk. I feel like the funk has kept me in maintenance mode for the last week. Could I be weighted down with mental crap??

Over all I felt ok this week, did workouts, felt that I left it all out on the course so to speak, logged my food, burned off any overage in calories, etc. Today, I just feel deflated. Not defeated but just deflated. I even took all my sunshine in a bottle meds. The only thing I did differently is I didn't work out today. But I did an especially long and hard workout yesterday so I figured I'd take the day off to give the legs some time to recover.

OK now I'm rambling. LOL

Tell me I'm crazy and that tomorrow will be a better day!!

Tomorrow will be a better day, Buffy. :flower3: It's still the dead of winter, your body might just need a little time to adjust to the new regime. Hang in there!

I want everyone to protect your backs while doing your planks. :goodvibes

Thank you for the reminder to protect our backs! :flower3:

Here is a link to an example of a modified plank on sparkpeople.com http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/exercises.asp?exercise=7 and a regular plank http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/exercises.asp?exercise=141

And both versions say it is important to remember to breathe! :teeth:

Not feeling very "woo hoo" right now but... but I am proud of continuing through the month :)

Woo hoo for continuing through the month even when you aren't feeling it! :woohoo:

Did a work out, C25K week 2/day 1. pushed my run speed to a steady 5 but slacked on the walk speed, 3.6 ( was maintaining a 4.0 all week). New pants kept sliding down, compression sleeves for the calves made my legs hurt worse, DD was trying to read to me but didn't know a lot of the words. Didn't go well, was one of my worst workouts to date but I mentally feel better for getting it out of the way.
I opted to also do a Galloway 5K workout, just 10 minutes. The man is trying to kill me!! Lol 5.5 run?!? Never done that before for more than 30 seconds. I did a 1/1 ratio 5.5/3.0 and it went really well. I actually could have done more if I hadn't already done a 35 minute workout already. DS16 was laughing at me because at 5.5 my pants were falling off like crazy! But he redeemed himself when he herded the little ones off to bed so I could finish.
I'm kind of liking the Galloway app better, (now that it works since I have a better phone).
10-17 minutes doesn't seem long enough though so I'm not sure what to do. I really like his commentary too. I may stick with this one for a while and see how it goes.

Rambling again. Hitting the shower and then bed! Have a great night!

Buffy, for starters you might need some smaller pants, girl. No falling on the TM! Galloway's programs start you off slowly to keep you injury free but you will be building up time rather quickly so enjoy the shorter workouts while you can. Also, you can adjust the speed on the app so if 5.5 is too high, then take it down a notch. It's a lot of fun and I know that you will be a success! :flower3:

My big WOOHOO is getting weighed at the OBGYN today and seeing that weight number coming down. Also losing an inch on my waist. :worship:

That is a big woo hoo for sure! :woohoo:

That is too bad about your chiropractor, Pamela. Hope that you are feeling better. :flower3:

:woohoo: for being on the wagon and in charge!

We're both guilty too of being big foodies and making it one of our only pleasures-- we need to start doing stuff that's fun. Shouldn't be too awful--lol.

:woohoo: on having more fun stuff in your life!

I am so proud of you for getting it DONE! Even if it was a terrible workout, you beat the person who never got off the sofa! Remember... this is not about PERFECTION! It is about heart, and determination, and effort!

Eating more fruits and veggies. That is BIG for us. Right now I have an eggplant and an artichoke in my fridge in which I need to sit down and learn to cook this week. :thumbsup2

Also have a mango and a pomegrante on the counter.

My big WOOHOO is getting weighed at the OBGYN today and seeing that weight number coming down. Also losing an inch on my waist. :worship:

How wonderful that you are trying so many new fruits and vegetables. Mangos are DELICIOUS as long as they are ripe.... but they can be hard to cut. I tend to peel them with a potato peeler and then cut the big "cheeks" off the pit and then cut off the smaller portions, but it is really slippery without the peel! And the flesh is really fiberously clinging to the pit as well. But it is delicious and well worth the effort!

Pomegranate.... just can't get into it. Like the flavor, but hate dealing with the pits. I know some people eat the pits, but I just don't like them.

Eggplant is so versatile! You should be able to find lots of recipes for that. My only suggestion would be to peel it. The large storebought eggplants end to have thick bitter peels and they are usually coated in parrafin. The only time I eat the peel is when it is locally grown and usually organic.

Artichokes....haven 't cooked them in years because the family doesn't care for them. And I find them to be a lot of work for a little bit of product. That said, they are fun to eat... especially if you can find a yummy sauce to dip the leaves in!

How wonderful to lose an INCH! Congrats!

Good for you for climbing back in and taking the reins!

I saw the scale finally move this week. (I am hoping my "girl" issues are resolved. Not only is it physically exhausting ... It doesn't put me in a good mental state.) So, I am proud of the times I really just wanted to eat whatever I wanted for the day ... and instead stayed the course.

Big victories for you this week!

And a small Whoo Hoo ... I ran in the rain today. I actually like running in the rain when it is warm ... and it was a balmy 65 here today. It is suppose to get cold here tomorrow, so it was lovely to get out and feel the warmth.

It is warm here today too and I was contemplating running in the rain, but the wind just picked up in a crazy fashion and it is a driving, pouring rain right now! I'll see how it looks in an hour. Glad you were able to get out!

Pam ... I am in on the plank a day. Didn't try it yet ... but I have a feeling one minute is going to be tough. I have a student that I see in a one-on-one situation for a variety of reasons and I am thinking both of us could benefit from this before we start our reading lesson. I will have to think more about this with him. If I start it, he will probably demand we do it everyday. Which could be good/bad for me.:rotfl:

What a wonderful idea! Have you ever heard of "Brain Gym" ? They use brief physical activity to help start connections in kids brains before starting math or reading activities. It is pretty interesting.

:goodvibes Rose, I am proud of you! And thank you for starting this thread. It has made a difference in my life ... you are awesome!

She is awesome!

Buffy, I went 2 weeks of not seeing anything on the scale. I was exercising for an hour just about everyday (you can see on MFP) and really watching what I was eating. Finally, my body is saying, "Oh ... you are trying to lose weight!" I just hope it continues to cooperate! :lmao:

:lmao:

I'm not sure what meds you may be taking but I did a little research on my prozac and there's evidence it slows down metabolism. I cut my dosage down to 10 mg's but I'm not willing to completely go off it.

Well-- didn't make it to Costco today but made a trip to Grocery outlet. I just was going to go there to get some ingredients for dinner then of course spent way too much time there--I love Grocery Outlet it's like a treasure hunt every time. Was trying to incorporate Linguisa sausages into a healthy meal and was going to make this soup with onions and sweet potatoes, never did anything like that but thought it sounded good and not too hard. Anyway copped out when I passed by the yakisoba noodles but did ok--added a whole pack of bean sprouts, mushrooms,& snap peas, to it and it was pretty good. Husband was iffy about it but you know-- if I'm going to be the one cooking dinners around here, I'll make what I want....We are really different when it comes to veggies-- he loves veggies, never was a picky kid but he likes things plain. Like he doesn't like to have anything in his eggs or on a pizza unless it is traditional ingredients-- like sausage and pepperoni on pizza. He hates any kind of different toppings...and with eggs it can only be cheese. Me I grew up not eating any veggies except corn and peas-- only starting to add some intermittently as a teen-- mostly just salads...I was an extremely picky kid. I also work in a grocery store and in the meat dept. so I'm always getting great deals on meat and cupboard type stuff--there's always markdowns and coupon deals. In the summer I love to go to the farms because it is so much fresher and cheap too but in the winter--I shy from veggies. I've decided though lately that I'll start to buy more veggies during the week to supplement my bargains--it'll give me an excuse to see my 'friend' too, but I am so picky it's going to be a challenge. After working 12 years in produce I got to be as picky about my produce and fruit as I am about my meats...plus I'm extremely frugal....to give you an idea about what I'm dealing with with the husband-- he hates roasted veggies...if it wasn't a Pleasantville staple he doesn't have much to do with it. :rolleyes2
Anyway-- like I said-- until he wants to start cooking-- he's just going to have to deal with the way I like things--eating healthier will benefit him much more than me really-- he's overweight, smokes, and has high blood pressure. We're both guilty too of being big foodies and making it one of our only pleasures-- we need to start doing stuff that's fun. Shouldn't be too awful--lol.

Glad you are thinking and trying to make healthier meals for BOTH of you! Hope DH becomes more open to trying new things! Check out the BL recipe thread if you need any ideas!

WOOHOO on 4 pounds! That is great!

Glad you are trying the planks. Try doing them in front of a mirror if you can, to help with the form. The trainer I used to work with at the Y used to threaten to put a 10 pound weight plate on your butt if you put it up during planks!

This is a great plan! :thumbsup2

QOTD Thursday, January 31, 2013: Please say something nice about the person who posted ahead of you. :flower3: If someone has already said something about the person ahead of you go back until you find someone new so we catch as many folks as possible.

I have LISA (lisa0711)! You are definitely someone who is determined to NEVER GIVE UP in this journey! And you continue to challenge yourself with all of these wonderful running events! You inspire some of us "kinda-wanna-be-a-runner" types every day! And you realized when things were no longer working and rather than sit and whine, you took matters into your own hands and restarted WW with a great attitude and had a wonderful first week! And of course, you are our "Fearless February Leader"! ..............P

Happy Thursday everyone! And happy last-day-of-January! I hope your year got off to a great start!

Surprise, surprise..... no work for me again today!

As I mentioned, it is warmer than normal here today (and yesterday), and I was hoping to dodge the raindrops and get outside for a run/walk, but a few minutes ago the wind picked up and the rain started coming down in buckets! It felt a little like a "Dorothy in Kansas" moment! But I'll give it a bit of time and see if I can get outside.

I was kind of half-planning a final January weigh-in for today, but decided to hold off until my regular weigh-in day tomorrow (especially since I had a huge cup of coffee before I remembered about the scale!:rolleyes2). Even though I can't send my weight in to Rose to count for January, I am still counting it toward my January goal, since it will be just 7 non-eating hours into February. ::yes::

Well.... I guess I don't have much to ramble on about this morning! Breakfast was delicious.... nonfat greek yogurt with fresh raspberries and a handful of high fiber breakfast "twigs" for crunch! I'm hoping to make myself a 1 Point pumpkin smoothie later today. I'll let you know how that turns out!

BBL to chat.................P

Pjlla is awesome not only challenging us but inspiring us too! I would also like to join the plank a day challenge.
My woohoo moment of the month is that yesterday I did my long walk for the week of 11+ miles and finished in less then four hours. Now I know that I won't get swept at the Princess Half in three weeks.:cool1:

Good thing I got in to see my chiropractor yesterday.......because his office burned down last night!:scared1: I saw something on the news when I was on the TM this morning and I actually paused and said to myself that the video looked a lot like Dr. H's office.....so I checked later and it was ! I feel so bad....he is such a nice young family guy. But no one was hurt.

Chat with you all tomorrow!............P

Holy cow!!! That's crazy!
I hope he can find a new office space, but all those records. It's going to be a medical nightmare trying to get it all straightened out. I'm glad everyone was ok!

I'm not sure what meds you may be taking but I did a little research on my prozac and there's evidence it slows down metabolism. I cut my dosage down to 10 mg's but I'm not willing to completely go off it.

I take Biotin, Vitamin D and Flaxseed. they really help me stay focused and the D helps with seasonal depression. Gotta love living in a cold climate.

I just bought them yesterday! They were Large, which is smaller than I have been buying. No way my thighs would fit into a medium though.

Good to know about the app. I've had it on my phone for a while but with my 3G the app would continually crash. Now that I have the 4S, it seems to work perfectly.
5.5 wasn't too high but he really did make me work for it.

*********************************************

So today started out interestingly. We had wicked winds last night so I didn't get much sleep, I was waiting for the tornado sirens to go off.
Then about the time DS16 was to get on the bus, the winds picked up to over 70 mph, so I told him he's not going outside. Then I found out the kids school had a 2 hour delay, as did mom's school. So she came over to watch the little kids so I could drive DS16 to school. Get 1/2 mile down my road and my road is closed!! Thankfully I know the other 8 ways to get out of town so we were able to get going again, but I had to rush back so mom could get to work. Now the kids are eating breakfast and we have to leave at 10:10. Of course I had grand plans this morning of cleaning and going grocery shopping but those are going to be cut short.
The kids have a luncheon today for Grandparents day, I was going to go with my parents but I think I'll skip it and go grocery shopping.

OK off to PM Lisa and Rose. No woosh, holding steady.

I hope everyone has a great day!!

DD found a link to the story last night. Apparently the fire was called in less than 15 minutes after I left the office on Tuesday! I originally thought it was something that happened during the middle of the night. His "corner" of the building seemed less damaged (in looking at the news footage) but the report says that they are calling the building a total loss. I hope and pray that he had good insurance.

DD also creeped around on FB and found him and we were able to send him a message that way. He is just such a nice young with a young family. I hope he isn't too freaked out by this and that he is able to find new office space really soon! Guess DD doesn't get her "feel good adjustment" before States in 2 weeks!:(

Glad you are taking the extra D. I was doing well with it for a while, but have slacked off lately. Thanks for the reminder to start it up again!

We had some of that crazy wind a little bit ago, but it seems to have died down. Glad you are all okay!! I live so far out in the boondocks that if any one of the first 4 roads I need to use were closed, I'd be cut off! There is a non-town maintained "road" (more like a trail) that we have been wanting to talk to the town about fixing. In an emergency we could get out of our neighborhood on foot with that if need be. But it is in such terrible shape that the only things you could drive down it might be a dirtbike or ATV. Cars, trucks (i.e. firetrucks and ambulances) couldn't pass it. It has been neglected too long.

A few years ago during one of those crazy ice storms, we were very nearly trapped on our mountain. But I braved the tree limbs, etc and managed to get out to a main road, although it was tricky!

Anyhow.... glad the storm sirens didn't sound for you. It's nice to sleep in for a 2 hour delay, but it really throws the whole day off kilter!

Well.... the wind died down and the rain has let up and the sun is shining brightly.... but the temperature has dropped 15 degrees! I am NOT going outside for my walk! Well....maybe. The sunshine and fresh air is SO tempting! Maybe I'll do one loop around my neighborhood and see how it feels. If I am cold I can come home.... but if it seems okay I can venture out!

Earlier, when I was looking out the window at the weather I saw something rectangular and black on the deck.... praying that it wasn't what it looked like, I went out in the rain to grab it.... and it WAS what I was afraid it was.... a SHINGLE! YIKES!!:scared1: Not sure exacly where on the roof it came from. I went into the attic with a flashlight and looked all over and didn't see anything wet, so that is good. But obviously a new roof is much sooner in my future than I had wanted!:furious:

Do you think I should call the insurance company and try to report it as wind damage? I will admit, the roof was on my "radar" as needing replacing in a few years, but I was thinking maybe 5 years from now. The house is just barely 19 years old this May!

QOTD: About Buffy (BernardandMissBianca)! You are a ROCK STAR! You are a fun (and funny) busy Mom who gives SO MUCH to her kids... but you still find time to take care of yourself and visit with us here! You have NEVER given up on this, despite setbacks. You keep us legal here on the Dis when you wear your Mod hat.

You ARE a runner! And you've got the medal(s) to prove it! And we LOVE it when you are here more often with us, although we understand when you are busy.

Pamela, it is not uncommon to have a shingle or two get blown down in high winds. I have many contractor clients and have also had that happen to us personally. Our house was more than 20 years old and I was waiting to hear that new roof was needed but they simply put a couple of new shingles on and told us to call back them back in 10 years. I would wait on calling the insurance and call a roofing company that you trust since a little repair job will likely be less than your deductible. They will be busy with the storm and I'm sending you oodles of pixiedust: that is all there is to it.

Pamela, already talked about me so the next person should go further up the list for their answer to the QOTD. :goodvibes

I don't know enough specifically about any of you to give a special mention (but this will change as we go through the months I'm sure)

Big thanks to Rose&Mike for setting this up, and for welcoming little old me from the UK, and thanks to all of you for taking part. Without you all, this thread and challenge is nothing. I'm really enjoying the motivation that you have all given me in January, long may it continue. Will try to get more on board with QOTD in February :)

And the shingles keep falling like snowflakes! I'm up tp 10.5 now! I called the insurance company, but won't file a claim unless necessary. With DD heading to college in the fall there isn't really any $$$ set aside for a roof!

Power keeps fluctuating here from the wind. It actually went out once or twice for a second or two while I was on the TM. That was interesting.:rolleyes2

I also finished watching a documentary I started a while ago...called "Vegucated". If you don't want to even consider becoming a vegetarian or vegan, DO NOT WATCH IT! It is very compelling and to me, who has been considering going vegetarian, it was very affirming that this would be a good decision for me. No commitment yet, but the wheels are definitely turning.

Need to finish my lunch and fold laundry before picking up the kids and running DD to the eye doctor..............P

Don't know much about you yet-- hope to get to know you the next challlenge-:goodvibes

Well did my weigh in today and am officially down one pound for the challenge. Just pretend I had a typo(drop the 0 at the end) and I made my goal lol. I know I'm retaining water due to PMS but maybe next challenge I'll be more realistic-- I guess I forgot how hard this is.
Well-- better go work out so I have plenty of time before work.

QOTD:
50sjayne: You are wonderful in caring for your cats - and they look so cute in your signature!

So, I could not do the plank thing for more than 30 seconds today as my abs are so sore from yesterday. But I did it twice for 30 minutes. Hoping starting tomorrow it will get better!

I also was reading around the WISH board today and came across about someone mentioning something called "30 Day Shred". I thought that sounded interesting and I researched it a little bit. I ended up ordering the DVD from Amazon and am now very motivated to really get that 20 minutes workout in every day starting Monday! I also found the level 1 workout on youtube and just did that. I felt good as I was able to keep up with it, so I guess I am reasonably fit. But it was a great workout!

I wil be away this weekend, visiting my sister in Berlin. Already bought some healthy snacks for the 5 hour train ride as I tend to feel like I need to snack constantly when I am on a train. So, hopefully the weekend will not be too big of a set back!

Not sure how much I will be able to post over the next day, so everyone: have a great weekend and motivated start into the next month!

Final Statistics For January
The final update of the first post reflects participants who submitted at least one weigh in update throughout the challenge.

Total lost: 256.7 pounds!!

% to goal: 67 (as a group we reached 67% of our collective goal)

% lost as a group: 2 (This means as a collective group we lost 2% of our weight.)

It has been my absolute pleasure to host this month. This new format was so much easier to host and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. I thought we had some great discussions and lots of positive support. I am looking forward to hosting again in April.:goodvibes

I am handing the reins over to Lisa and sending her the spreadsheet. Hope everyone has a great February!

Everybody got their moving buddy? Hold hands, stick together, and let's get ready for the big move to FEBRUARY and the new thread for the Feb. challenge!

Stupid wifi at the Y not working again, so I am in the Dunkin Donuts lot!:lmao: DD forgot the book she needs to read for Economics tomorrow so her dear sweet Mom bought it on the iPad so she can read it on the ride home. Yup...I'm the best!:thumbsup2

Fingers crossed for a good weigh in tomorrow! So far I am not scheduled to work, but we will see what the morning brings! TTY tomorrow on the brand spankin' new thread! .........P
