"This is NOT the once in a lifetime trip I was hoping for!" - (Baby Simba - 12/18)

The One With The Back Story

This update won’t be fun, and won’t have many pictures, but I do feel it’s necessary for me to write it so you guys know what frame of mind I was in when the trip started, as well as how my health would affect the trip.

The weekend before Christmas, Ron got sick. Based on the symptoms he had I thought it was just a cold and that he was making it sound worse than it was based on him being a man. We all know men are big babies when they are sick. ;) He got better in time for Christmas Eve. Tired, but otherwise okay. We visited my family at my brother’s place that evening. We opened our presents the next morning,

006_zpsd714b004.jpg

Then around lunch time drove to his family where we were suppose to spend the afternoon and evening. Around the end of the afternoon I started feeling very tired, so we used the excuse of the baby to leave the party early. By 8pm I was feeling so run-down that I went to bed. 8pm. On Christmas Day. Even pregnant I never went to bed that early! The next few days followed the same pattern : I would feel relatively okay in the afternoon, but felt like crap at night. I tried to rest, but I visited a friend I had not seen in months, ran some last minute errands for the trip and went to Claudia’s 6 months check-up. That one I was happy to do because we have the same doctor and she checked both of us out and gave us the all clear to fly. :thumbsup2

The other reason why I couldn’t rest that much is because we had a GIGANTIC snowstorm that week. We received close to 18 inches of snow! Couple that with strong wind, and our street looked like that (not my car or my street, but you get the idea):

snowstormdecember2012_zps2531de07.jpg

This is Otaku clearing out the snow on our back balcony. We took the picture from the window she had to climb out of since we couldn’t open the screen door because the snow was too high. That railing behind her should be around the height of her ribcage!

004_zps58448f75.jpg

While I was feeling okay all those afternoons, I had no appetite. Add that to the fact that this flu (it was not just a cold after all. Oops, sorry DH for doubting you!), ahem, made me go to the bathroom more often, and I became quite dehydrated. I waited too long to do anything about it, so by the weekend I was feeling very weak and nauseous. I was caught in that vicious circle of “I’m nauseous so I can’t eat, and because I’m not eating I get nauseous”. I was feeling so bad that I considered canceling the trip! :scared1:. I was also extremely worried that Claudia would get a high fever while on the plane and we wouldn’t be able to get her to a doctor.

So there you have it. That was how I was feeling, both physically and emotionally, in the days leading to the trip. I was pretty useless in terms of last minute packing and preparation. I’m sure that did not help some of the bad moments we had on the trip.

003_zps6d25ab4f.jpg

It felt so weird to not be excited about going to Disney. I even had no problem sleeping the night before we left! That is so NOT me. Speaking of, check out the next post to read about departure day.

Day 1 part 1 – The One When We Fly To Orlando

As I said in the previous update, I had no problem sleeping the night before our trip. So weird and unlike me! We got up around 4am the morning of. I was feeling nauseous (it doesn’t help that besides the fact that I was sick, I ALWAYS feel nauseous on early mornings and can’t eat for several hours). Somehow I pulled through and helped finish prepare our things. We left the house at about 5:15am and had an easy drive to the airport. No snowstorm today! Ron dropped us off with our luggage, we got out of our winter boots, and then he went to park the car in long term parking. He came back faster than we expected and we got into the very long line to check our bags. Security and customs (we go through the American customs before departure, love this!) went faster, but by the time we were through everything the nausea was back full force. I tried to eat a plain toast from Burger King, but it didn’t work.

*Skip this next part if you are not interested in the boring details of our flight. I’m including them because I know as the new parent of a little baby I was very curious as to how Claudia would handle flying and liked reading about other parents’ experience.*

Soon we were boarding the plane. Since I was feeling so bad Ron took care of Claudia for the first half of the flight.

004_zps0203e568.jpg

She chose the “awesome” time of us waiting for the plane to be de-iced before taking off to poo. We couldn’t get up and go to the bathroom and I knew it would be at least 30 minutes before we were allowed to. She was crying and fussing so much that we changed her on our lap. Not our proudest moment, but at least she quieted down after. We took off soon after and she fell asleep almost immediately. Yay for that! After a while Ron’s arms were starting to hurt so he tried to transfer her to me, but she woke up. We spent the rest of the trip keeping her entertained with toys while watching some episodes of Modern Family. Claudia cried a little while landing, but mostly she was a pro at flying. Also, as we got closer and closer to Florida I finally started to feel better and get excited about going to Disney. I spotted a Magical Express bus while our plane was going towards our gate and that made me happy. I got a little confused after landing as to where we were supposed to pick up our stroller so I walked all the way to the terminal, only to have to turn back and wait just outside the plane’s door. I had to wait a while with Claudia in my arms, but eventually I got the stroller back. I’m still not convinced that having the stroller in the airport made things easier than using a baby carrier would have been. My arms were busy pushing the stroller while they would have been free to carry a bag or luggage, and it was a pain to get her out of and fold to pass through security. Plus, she spent at least half the time OUT of it anyway...

As soon as I exited the “tunnel” into the airport, PopArtGal came up to me and I had my very first Dismeet! We knew we would probably see each other there as she was leaving on the same plane I had arrived in. We chatted for a minute, then she went back to her family and we left. Sorry for no picture, but as I mentioned in the intro I was in survival mode and my brain could not think that much. Plus our arms were all way too full to take out a camera. Apparently they were not too busy to take a picture of this Christmas tree though.

005_zpsa35b971d.jpg

We took the fake monorail.

007_zpsdf3dcf34.jpg

Someone looked quite sleepy. Me thinks her airplane nap should have been longer.

006_zps88d51301.jpg

We got our bags fairly quickly, then made our way to Magical Express. We’ve been to Disney 3 times so far, and every resort we’ve stayed at is in the same ME line.

008_zps3e259f1d.jpg

We had to wait about 5-10 minutes before boarding. We got a real ME bus!

009_zps68feaf31.jpg

Somewhere along the way Claudia had fallen asleep and did not even wake up when I transferred her from the stroller (a first!). (What the heck was I thinking sitting next to the window? I had to spend the entire bus ride trying to shield Peanut from the sun!)

010_zps5add5ff5.jpg

I was very happy to be in Orlando and taking ME. As soon as the bus was filled, we left.

011_zpsf2645ff4.jpg

Soon we saw those beautiful gates (sorry for the blurry picture).

012_zps74349763.jpg

While waiting they called to see if anyone was going to Caribbean Beach resort as I think the previous bus was only going there. That means we didn’t have to stop there and Art of Animation was the first stop!

013_zps1cbe1cbc.jpg

There was no line to check in.

015_zps0dd0a797.jpg

We had all gone to the counter, but the girl’s computer was so slow and it took forever (I thought of you Nermel!). They had all come up to the counter with me, but after a while Otaku left with Peanut and took some lobby pictures.

You can see more pictures in my AoA review. (You can click on the link)

Checking in was taking a long time and it was starting to wear on me. Finally the process was finished and we got our keys. Our room was ready and our requests of building 7 and first floor were met, so that’s a plus! We walked to our room, getting a glance at where we stayed during our Disneymoon along the way.

Our room was the very last one of the building, facing the pool.

We dropped off our luggage and took a few pictures of the room (more pictures available in the room review here).

We got two towel art. A Mickey head and a shell.

The girls hung out on the bed while we got situated. Be ready, here comes a couple of cute baby photos!

Up Next, Eating, Resting and Exploring

So sorry you were so sick, but glad you had a good flight, got a real ME bus and the pictures of Claudia on the bed are adorable!!!!

Thank you. That picture of Claudia sitting on the bed is the one that got the most "like" on Facebook!

I am sorry you were feeling so crummy even before your trip. :( Having had the stomach flu last week, I know it is not pleasant and I probably wouldn't have had any excitement if we were leaving on a trip either.

The baby cuteness is just too much....your daughter is absolutely beautiful and I just want to very carefully pinch her cheeks.

Sorry you had to wait for awhile during check-in...especially not feeling well. But :worship::worship: your room was ready. And what a cute room (I don't do value resorts, but I promised Mark one night at the AOA for his business trip in April). Cute towel animals.

Can't wait to hear where you went to eat and how you were feeling.

Oh my gosh.....look at all that snow! I seriously don't know that I could deal with that every Winter. But, I guess if it were where I had lived all of my life, I wouldn't know any different. ;)

Uggh, I hate that you weren't feeling well on the days leading up to the trip and during the flight. Being sick like that can zap the energy right out of you.

The girls are such cutie pies! I'm loving all of the pictures of them. Especially the ones in the new Little Mermaid rooms.

What a bummer that you started the trip not feeling well. :worried:

But your flight and ME trip seemed to go pretty well. I don't have kids myself but will be traveling with a 8, 6 and 2 year old next January so it should be an interesting change.

Love the pictures of AOA. I must stay there someday! ::yes::

Okay... Claudia is so cute! I miss my girls being that small!!! I would be completely happy with a TR of cute baby shots! That really stinks that you were not feeling well at all... I think every Dec TR involves illnesses this year! Just out of curiosity we want to go In Jan- when did the crowds thin out?

Glad you were finally feeling a little better once you were close to WDW. Love all the pictures!!!

Subbing! We leave in 18 days for our first trip with baby (7 months). It has been a sick month in our house, too. I am hoping to benefit from your mishaps. Sorry! We are also travelling with a 5 year old with a broken collarbone , so we need the baby part to go smoothly! One question... Did you use an infant seat stroller or a sitting up type stroller? Thanks!

Great start Mel, sorry you were feeling so lousy though.

Adorable pics of the girls on the bed :)

Your room looks nice! We had a quick look around AoA on our last trip and it looks awesome!

The only thing that would have made it worse is if it had been the stomach flu. That's what I was afraid of the most! I'm sorry you were sick, even at home it sucks.

LOL. I'll very carefully pinch her cheeks for you. ;)

Obviously the rooms at AoA are small, but they are the most beautifully Disney themed of all the resorts. I'm glad you are giving it a try! Plus, they have family suites if you prefer.

Well that was one of the worse snowstorm we've had in years. I had seen that much snow before, but not many times. I may be used to the snow, but I still hate it and would move down south in a second if it were possible and if it didn't mean being so far away from the rest of my family.

That's exactly it. Being sick zapped all my energy, both physically and emotionally.

Thank you! :cutie:

It sucked to feel sick and not be excited about the trip. I'm so glad the flight and ME went well, it helped make me feel better. That should be fun for you, to see WDW through the eyes of children. :cutie:

Oh yes, you must stay at AoA. It's wonderful!!! The pics do not do it justice.

I'm in! I read your last TR and loved it :)

:welcome: I'm glad you decided to post instead of just lurk. :goodvibes

Thank you! Well, most babies don't stay as small as Claudia for very long. She's special. :rotfl: I know what you mean though. You're in luck, there will be lots of cute baby shots. I know, everyone seems to be getting sick this year! Whether it's in TRs or on Facebook, that's all I hear about.

I had done research about the crowds and both people who had gone before during that time as well as Touring Plans' crowd calendar said that the crowds would thin out starting on the 2nd. That was not the case. :faint: I think because the 1st was a Tuesday lots of schools did not go back until the following Monday. Also, Disney had a discount starting on the 2nd. My theory is that those two things are the main reason why the crowds did not thin out until the weekend (Jan 5 & 6).

Glad you were finally feeling a little better once you were close to WDW. Love all the pictures!!!

Oh man! I feel bad for you, what with the sickness and broken collarbone. I won't have time to write many updates before you leave, so it won't help you much. You should send me a PM (private message) and I'll try to help you as best as I can. As for the stroller, check out this post from my PTR. It shows what stroller we brought. We bought it specifically for the trip. She had never been in it before, but we loved it! You can't really use one with an infant seat, because you need to fold it every time you take the bus and it would be a hassle. An umbrella stroller is the way to go, unless you want to rent one (we almost did that).

Great start Mel, sorry you were feeling so lousy though.

Thanks. After feeling so bad and having it almost ruin our trip, I'm never skipping the flu shot again!

AoA is amazing! It's is so well themed and totally Disney. We loved it!

Ugh I'm sorry you guys were both sick before your trip! Especially you though, still not feeling well while traveling, that's the worst! :(

Glad to hear Claudia did a good job flying! She's so cute! Love the pics of her on the Little Mermaid bed! Isn't that room so adorable?

Hi! I just found your trip report and I'd love to hear about your trip with a little one! We took our daughter when she was almost 2 and it was kind of a disaster. We went when she was almost 3 and it was awesome. Now she's 4 and we have an infant, but want to go back! While we're deciding, I'm reading trip reports to get my Disney fix.

Definitely NOT the way to start a trip . I'm so sorry that you guys had to be sick!

WHOA. Now that's some snow! I've only seen that much snow once in my life when there was a freak blizzard here in GA. Everything shut down for two weeks!:rotfl:

Otaku likes the thumbs up, I see:thumbsup2. All the kids at Julia's school are favoring the peace sign these days:lmao:. Kids crack me up...but I guess she's a young lady, really!

Those Claudia pictures are just for me, right:love:? Such a cutie pie! Can never tire of seeing that sweet face!

Oh man, that darn flu! It has been an awful winter for illness so far! I am bummed to hear you had to take it to Disney with you! :(
I am glad to hear your flight went well though! Uneventful flights are the best! And changing poo diapers on a plane.......:rolleyes2 I hear ya there LOL!!!

Claudia has sent us into cuteness overload! What a sweetie pie, I know this report is going to be full of sweet pictures! :lovestruc Otaku seems like a wonderful big sister! :goodvibes Love AoA too!!

Mel I'm so sorry that you were feeling so poorly. (I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who gets too excited to sleep the night before a trip though).

I was sooo confused about where to pick up the stroller the first time we flew with Maddie. I went all the way up, then tried to go back down and security stopped me. OOPS!

Oh those pictures of Claudia are just precious! I'm with Kathy-I'd love to *safely* pinch those little cheeks, and probably *safely* eat up her little hands and squish her little legs too.

Can't wait to hear more!

:welcome: We did stay at two wonderful resorts! I'll probably start my TR by doing a review on both, as I wait for the photopass CD to arrive. :goodvibes

Awesome! Sounds great!!! This is my first time reading one of your TRs so im very excited! :goodvibes

Thanks again! :wizard:

Hi Mel

I'm back along for the ride. Sorry to hear things didnt start off too well, your flu sounds awful.

Claudia seems to have grown so much - she is gorgeous. Love the photo on the bed.

Hope you are all doing okay and looking forward to keeping up.
