Probably a good idea. The last commercial crash was the commuter plane in Buffalo with 2 inexperienced pilots. The weather was bad and the pilot did the opposite of what he should have.

The airlines are making moves to get rid of the smaller regional planes and that's where alot of the inexperienced pilots are. Southwest is leasing the 717's from AirTran to Delta, Delta plans to use some to phase out regional jets, you can get twice as many people on a 717 than a 50 seat regional. So less pilots will be needed.

1500 hours isn't alot to have the lives of many in your hands.

Interesting information. It kind of legitimizes my refusal to use Delta or United and the commuter planes out of Buffalo. Let me be clear, up until now I have refused simply because I am a nervous flyer and the small planes make me worse. However, it makes sense that the inexperienced pilots would be flying them. Bleh... too scary for me.

But if you get rid of "small" planes, wouldn't that mean new (ie: inexperienced) pilots would then end up flying larger (ie: more complicated) planes right out of school?

In all seriousness.. I'm just not comfortable on them, but I'd likely use them again if that we're my only option. I don't want to see the world rid of them.

I'm sure they will reduce the number of flights. I'd rather have less options than be stuck in a regional jet. I used to fly Pittsburgh-Minneapolis alot on business and it was all regional jet. 2 1/2 hours on a 50 seat RJ was awful. They have cut down from 5 fights a day to 3 but are now using A319's and larger RJ's (CRJ900 & EMB175).
