Say Bye-Bye To The iasw Goodbyes

Is anyone just a smidge disappointed that Disney's fancy new addition to IASW is technology that Universal has used at ET for the past 20+ years?

I was thinking about that as I was reading it too. I do think it is a pretty cool concept (and a change that I really am not too upset about), but it certainly isn't new.

I'd LOVE to see this technology used in Turtle Talk with Crush. My kids would be super excited to have Crush call them out by name!

Something tells me Disney wouldn't be investing in this new technology and spending money to make changes to rides unless they were quite confident it would work. So I for one am excited to see what it's like.

Meh, I'm not jazzed or angry about this but what I do feel is that I want to smash all these stupid ipads people insist on using as cameras and video!!! (and this isn't a random rant, there's an ipad in the video)

Curiously gutted by the end of these stupid sparkly signs. :(

Must be because I was obsessed with iasw when I was little. OBSESSED.

Bah. I love the goodbye section.

I'm all for cool new tech and experiences, but this particular change makes me sad somehow. Too bad it couldn't be done without sacrificing a signature feature of the attraction.

Completely agree.

That was my first thought! Put the ipad down!!!

I rode IASW on Friday, and it was so sad being in that room with a black curtain/wall. Even though I knew ahead of time the scene would be gone, it just bummed me out.

I have to say that the new addition does not sound as bad as what I was worried might be coming. I hope it will incorporate the original look/feel of the space and the different languages. But given the consistent failure of Test Track's new RFID technology, I'm not holding my breath that this will work even 75% of the time.

I was about to say something about how there's no way they'd have time to name everyone in the boat, so you couldn't know whether it is actually working or is just spitting out a default list of names, but then it occurred to me - what if it's not talking to you, but just putting your name up on a screen with all the goodbyes? That would get around the mispronunciation issue, and would allow an entire boat to be recognized at once.

I'm imagining what this would look like some more, and while I still think it's not as bad as what I was worried about, I predict that the overall effect will clash badly with the rest of the attraction. It just seems odd to go from the classic, tactile, 3-dimensional ride to 2 big screens. I hope I'm wrong, though.

One more thing - on Friday, I noticed what appeared to be 2 NexGen poles installed about halfway down the first ramp, before you round the corner. They were covered up. I noticed the same thing on another ride, but I can't remember which one...it must have been Peter Pan or Haunted Mansion. Not sure if this is related to FP+ or the new exit effect.

ugh...lame!

I love the goodbyes in various languages. So do the kids. Makes it fun to guess the language.

*sigh*

Kids will love this, and I think it is cute, too so even big kids love it. :thumbsup2

That would be great! I could see these new magic bands being used in so many ways!

IF it works. And IF it works consistently. If it doesn't, then you'll have a minute or so of riding through a black tunnel...towards a bright light....

:thumbsup2 We wont be wearing the wristbands, they'll be in our bags ect so I'm not sure this would even work for us. And I know we'll forget to "wear" them just to get this last part of the ride at the end.

I'll miss the simple end to the ride, loved that room!

The Yeti says hi.

(Or would if he could move.)

;)

I...actually don't have a problem with this.

1) I do.
2) Disney is putting readers in all the rides, and other locations.
3) They can now track your activities every day, every where.
4) The benefits to Disney are
. . . they can send you marketing ads for your interests
. . . they can tailor vacation ads to your ride preferences
. . . they can send you ads for merchandise based upon your rides

5) Big Brother is finally here!
6) You didn't think Disney invested $1-Billion for YOUR benefit, did you?

Thought the same thing with Uni's ET ride. We've always heard our names and when the kids were little, they loved hearing their names. Now we thin it's kitschy but still fun. At least they did without a tracking bracelet.

Except Big Brother has been around for a while. He's just getting to WDW in a big way.

:thumbsup2 If you're not "wearing" the band and it's in your bag ect, will they still be able to read where you are?

We loved the "goodbye" room too!

Does it necessarily signal the end of the 'goodbye'?

I'd have thought, and maybe hope, that the room will return in a similar format except the signs will display the name and a goodbye for each rider of the passing boat in their own language, and in the event of a part filled boat, the signs would default to a randomly selected goodbye in a language not displayed for a rider.

I have no problem with the 'big brother' aspect as Disney already know my habits to a degree through room card and credit card use. Marketing tailored for that will get the same result as marketing they would no doubt create if they didn't know my movements. What it will do is provide better demographic returns that could eventually make my experience more enjoyable.
