Nemesis Challenge: No Pain, No Gain. A ½ Marathon 2013 NEW Updates 2/20 NEW

Ever since I found the DISboards, I've met some great people. It is weird that you can tell a persons personality from what they type on a computer screen. Some people you 'click' with and others... well, become what can be only called as your nemesis. According to Webster, a NEMESIS is a formidable and usually victorious rival or opponent. I've found my nemesis here on the DIS. What better way to strike fear into his soul than to challenge him to run in the Walt Disney World 1/2 marathon? Neither of us were runners. His wife was also 7 months pregnant at the time. It went down like this:

Thursday Feb 16th 10:47am

Tim: So I had this crazy idea. Im not sure if this is the right time for you though with the baby on the way. What if we had a marathon challenge and run in the January ½ marathon. Ive never run one before. Maybe this would be a way to get myself into shape.

Barry: Hmmm& Interesting. You calling me fat? I could use the motivation too- I ran that 5K back in September but barely lifted my feet since then.

And with those simple texts, our Nemesis Challenge was born. PTR is HERE

Not only was this 1/2 marathon a running first, but this was the first time my DW & I have been to Disney without our kids. I guess I should tell you who we are..

I'm Tim and that beautiful woman standing with me is Melody..

Not only was this the weekend of our marathon challenge, but a group of guys here on the DIS, the SELF PROCLAIMED DISDads, were having their convention in WDW during this weekend. I'm sure you'll see them pop in here from time to time. Let me apologize to you all ahead of time. :lmao:

This is a 4 day TR about running, friends- new and old, and an adults only trip to WDW!

This is the only time I will not be behind on this TR! Between appointments and saw this.

Hi Tim!

I'm here!

Both representing Team Tim and those uncivilized Disdads that you've already apologized for.

I'll be following along also, maybe pick up some newbie 1/2 marathon tips for a future one

Short Backstory

It was back in 2010 when Barry & I declared ourselves nemesis. Or is it nemesis's, or is it nemesi? Well whatever it is it was declared. We've met each other in Disney 3 times before this trip, not because we planned it like that, it just happened that way. So after the challenge was on the table and accepted, we both spent close to a year training and preparing for this run. We both ran some 5ks and 10ks to get ready.

I had a few setbacks which barred me for running for months at a time. My last injury occurred in December. I was able to get in to see my orthopedic doctor and he strongly recommended that I did not run in the marathon. There was a possibility I could fracture one or both of my legs. I listened and stopped running. I tried one day tp ride the bike at the gym but it hurt after. I stopped all training to rest my legs, but there was NO WAY I wasn't going to try to run in the 1/2.

Friday 1/11

The alarm went off and Melody & I slowly rolled out of bed. We threw the last few items in our carryon and were out the door . My mom was taking the first shift watching our kids- Juliana (6) and Christopher (17m). We were running a little late but when we arrived at the airport there was not 1 person in line at the Southwest check in. Not 1. It was unbelievable. Every time we fly with the kids the place is a zoo. Figures. Security? Though that in 5 minutes. It might of taken 10 minutes to get from the door of the airport through security total but it was probably less.

On the way to the gate I had to play with the umbrellas since Juliana wasn't there.

Stopped at Dunkin Donuts and waited to board the plane.

We were flying Southwest and had a B 40-something boarding position. They started lining people up. Melody and I were standing near the counter discussing if we would end up sitting next to each other when an agent called us over. She gave Melody a pass to be the first group on the plane... even before the A's!

Check it out, an empty plane!

DSC06616.jpg

I tried to fall asleep on the plane but the captain kept buzzing in and waking me up. The flight was good. I think we just passed the DelMarVa when Melody grabbed my hand and put it on her belly. I felt our daughter kick for the first time. It was so amazing! (She is pregnant for the wise guys)

DSC06617.jpg

I tried to go back to sleep but no luck. (I'll probably lose my man card for this) I leaned over and started reading what Melody was reading on her iPad. 50 Shades of Gray. LOL I think we read that for a little over an hour when it was time to land. (Just when it was starting to get good.LOL)

DSC06618.jpg

The doors to the plane opened and we felt a rush of warm humid air. It felt really good. A short ride on the fake monorail...

DSC06620.jpg

We were barely off the plane and we were already stopping at the Disney store.

DSC06622.jpg

We followed the signs for ME, we never have taken it before...

DSC06623.jpg

..waited in line for 5 minutes- which seemed like 2 hours.. and boarded this.

DSC06624.jpg

It wasn't long before we saw this beautiful sight!

DSC06626.jpg

We had to stop at POR then it was on to our home for the next few days- OKW!

We checked in but our room wasn't ready. No biggie. We weren't planning on hanging out at the resort anyway. We did love the balloons and knew the kids would of loved them if they were with us.

DSC06629.jpg

While we were checking in, a CM next to us was from our hometown. The CM & Melody started chatting. Come to find out Melody went to high school with her niece. Small World. We were all set and they were going to text me when the room was ready.

We didn't even look around the resort. We walked out and hopped on a bus heading over to the WWoS. I had to pick up my race packet.

DSC06631.jpg

We got to WWoS just before 1pm and the place was an absolute zoo. I had to go into the HP field house to grab my bib and change my corral. While I was waiting for the corral change Barry walked in and was waving to me from the entrance. His kids just ran in the RunDisney kids races and did a great job!

The line moved quickly and I was presenting my 10K time to a very nice lady. She placed a sticker on my bib. I ended up in corral B. Sweet. Barry, who was in corral B, texted me and asked me what corral I was in. I told him I was placed in A. He didn't believe me so I broke down and told him B. He still didn't believe me. LOL

DSC06634.jpg

We were only in the HP building for 20 minutes, not too bad. But then I had to go get my shirt and goodie bag in a different building. The Josten's Center. The line was close to a 1/2 mile long. It is hard to tell but the line started when we walked out of the HP building...

DSC06635.jpg

The Josten's building is where the expo was located. You can see the people to the left of the picture. We were so far away they look like ants!

DSC06636.jpg

The expo had all kinds of vendors from hair ties, to shoes, to plaques, to running clubs.. etc.

DSC06637.jpg

There was a huge wall with every runners name on it. I had to find my name. There it is Tim blur..

nameblr.jpg

It was really neat.

DSC06642.jpg

We grabbed my goodie bag and stopped to pick up some sleeves for my legs. I also bought some biofreeze for the legs. We were on our way out of the expo just past 2. Not too bad.

DSC06643.jpg

We walked to a bus that was dropping off at the boardwalk and were going to take the backdoor into Epcot.

Up next... a meet and the pre-race meal

I'm in. Interested to see how well you remember things. :lmao:

It was back in 2010 when Barry & I declared ourselves nemesis. Or is it nemesis's, or is it nemesi?

Don't forget, Barry's wife has pointed out that you guys are the worst nemesississes ever.:thumbsup2

We both ran some 5ks and 10ks to get ready.

You make it sound so simple!

I had a few setbacks which barred me for running for months at a time. My last injury occurred in December.

This was when my leg fell off.

We were running a little late but when we arrived at the airport there was not 1 person in line at the Southwest check in. Not 1.

Check it out, an empty plane!

:eek::eek:

I think we just passed the DelMarVa when Melody grabbed my hand and put it on her belly. I felt our daughter kick for the first time. It was so amazing! (She is pregnant for the wise guys)

Cool! She was obviously excited to be near Delaware. :thumbsup2

(I'll probably lose my man card for this) I leaned over and started reading what Melody was reading on her iPad. 50 Shades of Gray. LOL I think we read that for a little over an hour when it was time to land. (Just when it was starting to get good.LOL)

:scared1: Um...wow. I'm sure there something to say here, but--

SQUIRREL! :squirrel:

Melody's shirt is cute.:thumbsup2

While I was waiting for the corral change Barry walked in and was waving to me from the entrance. His kids just ran in the RunDisney kids races and did a great job!

Seems awfully convenient... :scratchin

Blur because that's what you look like when you run, right?:confused3

Ever since I found the DISboards, I've met some great people. It is weird that you can tell a persons personality from what they type on a computer screen. And you still haven't met one of your first and probably one of the best. :goodvibes

I'm Tim and that beautiful woman standing with me is Melody..

Yes she is beautiful. She's actually always beautiful, but more so when she is radiant with pregnancy.

Not only was this the weekend of our marathon challenge, but a group of guys here on the DIS, the SELF PROCLAIMED DISDads, were having their convention in WDW during this weekend. I'm sure you'll see them pop in here from time to time. Let me apologize to you all ahead of time. :lmao:

Heaven help us.

This is a 4 day TR about running, friends- new and old, and an adults only trip to WDW!

Sounds like this will be very, very interesting.

Isn't that always the way?

On the way to the gate I had to play with the umbrellas since Juliana wasn't there.

There you go again, using your kids for your excuses.

We were flying Southwest and had a B 40-something boarding position. They started lining people up. Melody and I were standing near the counter discussing if we would end up sitting next to each other when an agent called us over. That is awesome that they did that for Mel!

That is great.

Oh, I am not touching this one...I'm going to leave it to all of your DISdads! :lmao::lmao::lmao:

The doors to the plane opened and we felt a rush of warm humid air. It felt really good. A short ride on the fake monorail...

DSC06620.jpg

Don't you just love that hot, humid air hitting you first thing. :rotfl:

We were barely off the plane and we were already stopping at the Disney store.

DSC06622.jpg

Well, you had to start your excitement somewhere...where better than a Disney store.

We followed the signs for ME, we never have taken it before...

DSC06623.jpg

..waited in line for 5 minutes- which seemed like 2 hours.. and boarded this.

DSC06624.jpg

How did you like the ME? We really enjoy it and saving on the car rental until the end of our trip when we drive to Marco.

It wasn't long before we saw this beautiful sight!

DSC06626.jpg

Best sight in the world.

We had to stop at POR then it was on to our home for the next few days- OKW!

DSC06629.jpg

You'll have to stay there on a future trip. With your growing family, renting a one-bedroom villa is probably a very good idea for the future.

While we were checking in, a CM next to us was from our hometown. The CM & Melody started chatting. Come to find out Melody went to high school with her niece. Small World. We were all set and they were going to text me when the room was ready.

That's a whole lot of people.

We were only in the HP building for 20 minutes, not too bad. But then I had to go get my shirt and goodie bag in a different building. The Josten's Center. The line was close to a 1/2 mile long. It is hard to tell but the line started when we walked out of the HP building...

Wow...all those people were running? Incredible.

The Josten's building is where the expo was located. You can see the people to the left of the picture. We were so far away they look like ants!

DSC06636.jpg

Hope you didn't step on them.

There was a huge wall with every runners name on it. I had to find my name. There it is Tim blur..

It would have been better if it had said timmy

We walked to a bus that was dropping off at the boardwalk and were going to take the backdoor into Epcot.

Loved using that back entrance to Epcot and a big reason we chose BWV for our December trip this year.

Wow you got to go to Disney??? I have to hear about this trip.
