Hi! I'm a newbie to this whole thing but am planning on the Princess Half for next year. I have registered for my first 5K in April and have been doing C25K for two weeks now. I am overweight and out of shape and a Disney race is my motivation to get up off my butt!

I welcome all advice, race info, etc. that anyone is willing to share!

Hi Rhonda!
This is a lot all at once, and I hope I don't overwhelm you. Just know that people here are SUPER supportive and you can lean on them when you need to.
I would say just stick with your training plans, sign up to do a few races (5k's and a 10k) prior to the Princess, and know that you CAN do this.
Running other races prior will give you confidence that you can do it, and also get you used to how races run in general. I'd recommend that your 10k be as close to the deadine for online submission OR you can bring proof of your time to the Expo. The reason I say this is- regardless of what time you give them- you'll get a better corral placement and that means less of a chance of being swept.

I would also say- try not to get anxiety over any of it. You're running this race against yourself and no one else. Just keep up with your training- you'll have good, bad, and ugly training days. Everyone does. The key is in the consistency.

Another tip- While you want to definitely push yourself to get better- always err on the side of safety and keeping yourself injury-free. Again- finishing is what the goal should be. However, I will say that after doing many 5k's and a 10k in the past months, starting was way harder for me than finishing. So, just know that by starting-- you've conquered the hardest part!!

FYI- I started running in August and am running the PHM this year. On my first practice run, I ran 1/4 of a mile at a nearby park, freaked myself out because there were other people there, and got into the car and left. The key is- I got back out there a couple of days later. Don't be scared and if you ever feel like you can't do this- just know that all of us have these thoughts and feelings. You just need to push that aside, get out there, and do your best.
In the beginning, I was hoping to make it with a 15 min mile. I'm down to a 12 min mile now :) I was 45 lbs heavier last May than I am right now. It CAN be done. I promise that you can do this :)

Thanks so much! I live in an area where running isn't a big thing, so I am having to go about an hour and a half from home for the 5K. Will definitely find some more races to run too, definitely a 10K in there before the 1/2 marathon. Thanks again; I really appreciate the info!

My biggest piece of advice is to remember that exercise is 10% body and 90% mind. The biggest issues people have with sticking to a plan and making it to a goal are mental. Don't scare yourself with the "But I'm overweight." "But I'm so out of shape." or the excuses of being too busy or the weather not being right or you not feeling it etc, etc. Trust me, they will come. Up until July 1 of last year, my exercise consisted of chasing my young kids and Zumba once a week. I started C25K and it was tough to do the minute of running. But I adapted quickly, I just had to stick with it. I did my first 10k in October, and have done a handful of 5ks since then. I went from barely being able to run for a straight minute to being able to run an entire 5k in under 30 minutes, and being able to job as much as 7.5 miles at a time.
You can do this! You just have to keep telling yourself this. If exercise were easy, everyone would do it. The biggest step is not actually running for a certain amount of time or a certain distance, it's actually starting, and keeping with it.

Thank you! Let me know how your Princess race goes next month. Best of luck to you!

Hi Rhonda!

I just wanted to jump in and say I'm right there with you! A little behind, as I just did week 2 day 1 of c25k today, but I'm also aiming to do the princess half next year. :)

Hoping to do the ToT 10miler in preparation for it, but we'll see how that goes. ;)

Hi! I just wanted you to know that I'm lurking here as well! I have wanted to do the Princess for 2 years now and 2014 WILL be the year I do it! I ran my first 5K back in October but I have plantar fasciitis in my feet, so I have to build up slowly so I can hopefully get to 13.1! Slow and steady, right?!! :thumbsup2

The first time I started running, quite a few years ago, I did C25K, it's a FANTASTIC program and you won't believe how you can run when you are done!

Wow! This was so encouraging! Thank you for sharing, it's just what I needed to read.

Hi there!

The best advice I can give is to start small. Start with a slow comfortable pace and work towards finishing a 5k. Once you've done that, you can continue to up the goal to 10k, 1/4 Marathon, etc. Check the internet for a training plan that works for you. There's tons of information out there!

Like a PP poster said, running is a completely mental sport. Sure, your legs will get tired and you'll want to stop but what makes a runner is the ability to keep going. Sure, you're legs might heart now, but you'll forget that completely when you make it across the finish line and they put a medal around your neck. That is the best feeling I've ever had in my entire life!

I'm also planning to run the 2014 Princess Half, so best of luck to you! I know I haven't given you a whole lot of technical advice, but I'll leave you with one of my favorite running sayings. I don't know it word for word, but its goes a little something like this:

She who finishes last is stronger than she who doesn't finish and she who didn't finish is stronger than she who didn't start at all.

Have the dates for the Princess in 2014 been announced yet? I'm hoping to do the Princess Half next year too :)

Rhonda...ME TOO!!!! I'm in week 2 of C25K and am doing the Princess Half in 2014!!! I'm overweight (hopefully not for long) and until now SOO not a runner!!! We can do this! Heck, we'll be doing a half marathon in our happy place! How bad could it be! Good luck in your training! I hope to see you in a year!

You can do it!!

I was where you are just 3 years ago. I started C25K in jan 2010 with the goal of princess 2011, and succeeded. C25k is an awesome program, and I did my first 5k that june.

I was also overweight and out of shape, and key for me was not overdoing it. I started at 215 lbs, and did the half at 205. I had hoped to lose more, but it was not to be that year.

In the beginning a runner I knew gave me the best advice. She said if I was dying, to just slow down. It takes time to build up your endurance, and it will come, but the c25k is really about building up your running endurance. After I ran 2.5 miles straight, I was so sore, and in pain that I decided to go to run/walk intervals, and did the princess and my training mostly run 5 min, walk 1 min.

I also set a goal in my head that by october 1st that year, if I could run/walk 7 miles in the 16min/mile pace, then I would register for the princess, and that's just what I did. I merged the training plans of Jeff Galloway and John Bingham, and sort of made my own plan after that.

Through the disboards, and that princess training and race, I met and have made some lifelong friends, and we are all planning and hoping to do the 2014 princess half. It is such an amazing experience.

My sil is also doing it for her first half, and is in the first weeks of c25k.

Good luck with your training! You will be amazed as how much you are truly capable of.

oh and this years princess program just came out on line, and the date is 2/21-2/23/2014!!!

It's our school vacation week, so I was hoping it wouldn't be changed!! Whoo hoo!!

I was in the EXACT same place you are today!!! I am doing the Princess Half this year...in two weeks. Woooo Whoooo! I started with the C25k and didn't stick with it. I let myself put it off over and over and over again. I then picked up the Jeff Galloway 5k app on my phone follwed by the Jeff Galloway 10k app. There are enough long days in the 10k app to get me through the 1/2 marathon.

I am STILL overhweight and really haven't lost any weight to speak of. :( However, I am able to do this race. Yesterday, I completed 12.5 miles. Yay!!! The thing that really helped me was I found an "official" thread here on the boards and really go to know the ladies in there. And then, they created a Facebook group. We support and laugh together so much. Don't get me wrong, I do have support here at home from my family and friends, but it is so much more different when you have someone pushing you to do the same miles they are doing. Or, if you experieince something different, you can go there and figure it all out.

I hope you'll do a better job of sticking with the training early (now) and your race will be a piece of cake. :) It is quite amazing what your body can do (overweight or not) if you just work up to it.

Again, congrats on starting this journey. The 2014 Princess will be here before you know it. :) Oh, and I made a tutu to run in for this race...never thought I'd do that. ;-)

I'll be running this one with you ladies. Its the day before my wedding. Watch out for the crazy bride and bridesmaid on the run!

You all need to go to thrift store and get cheap dresses that you can easily modify to run in! That would be awesome :)
