What kind of a housekeeping tipper are you?

My husband doesn't believe in tipping Housekeepers. My niece was a housekeeper at a small hotel in MN and I know how hard they work (they changed out all bedding including bedspreads between guests).

So after I discovered that he was taking the envelope with tip if I left the room before him, I now make sure I leave after everyone else and that my tip envelope is still on the pillow when we leave.

I tip from the first night on since Housekeepers change from day to day.
I have had more problems with Housekeepers at other places than Disney. Disney has been pretty good for us. Knock on wood.

I leave $1 per person, per night of stay.

This is what we do too. We tip daily because the staff can change from day to day.

We leave the money underneath a glass, propped up on coffee pot, sticking out underneath the ice bucket, etc. Just pick something that they're supposed to clean and they'll figure it out.

For those of you that do tip on a daily basis, how do you alert them that they money is for them? If you just leave a few bucks on the night stand, I would thing that they may not think it's for them, and leave it.

Any neat Disney-esque ideas?

I make up Housekeeping envelopes - one for each day of our trip and write Thank you Housekeeping and put Disney stickers on them for Disney.

At other hotels, I just put Thank you Housekeeping on it. I leave them on the pillow.

We tip each day in the morning before we head out for the day--we leave the tip in an envelope on the table where they will see it. We tip $5 per day (there are 5 of us) and I did make a note on the first day that my kids really enjoy the towel animals

I voted "I tip differently" because while we don't tip everyday, we DO tip on the days we choose to have houskeeping. We don't require them to clean everyday, so we put the do not disturb sign out and they leave towels at the door. We are not the type of people who need a freshly made bed everyday and we are not messy, so housekeeping isn't necessary every single day for us.

ETA: When we tip, we do it the morning of to ensure that the person getting the tip is the person doing the work. If we ever have an unsatisfactory result, I am sure we would make a call, but so far, our houskeepers at POP have been great.

Same with us. We put the do not disturb sign out, and only do housekeeping every 3-4 days or so. We dont change sheets at home every day, and really aren't in the room enough to need it cleaned everyday. We usually just ask for towels if needed. On days we DO use it we tip $5 that day, so like you said the person DOING the cleaning gets the tip.

$10 a day for two very clean people. Clean to the point where I bring extra grocery bags to line trash cans with if necessary. (BTW does Disney do this in FL? I know they do at the DLH in CA.) I usually leave it with a note requesting extra towels or toiletries.

Honestly I tend to not tip on the final morning because I have too much going on with packing and checking out. I try to remember but I usually fail.

Wow, that's a lot more than we tip! And to me, forgetting to tip on the *last* day means you're giving the person that will be doing the most, the least. The housekeepers before might not be putting new sheets on the bed, etc, but they WILL be doing that for the next guests, so they are working harder on that checkout day. And it might not be the same person who had been working in your room before.

Tipping is totally personal, and you tip WAY more than me so I'm not (not not not, I promise!) being judgy, but I'm trying to help you see that since you're a great tipper already, you're possibly missing the person who will work the hardest. Of course, you won't be the beneficiary of that work, but on the other hand, you got that benefit on checkin day, and didn't necessarily get a tip to *that* person. So it can feel like a full circle if you tip on checkout day.

I usually write a quick note: "For Housekeeping". I try to put it in a very obvious, otherwise clear, space.

And I do not leave ANY other change out whatsoever. This wasn't at a Disney hotel, but during my brother's wedding weekend, I was staying in a connected suite with my mom and stepdad. They were taking care of the (incredibly generous) tipping for the entire suite. Just before the wedding I had a last minute purse-emptying, and there was random change sitting amongst the other junk that accumulates in a purse over time.

When I came back to the room before the reception, the housekeeper had taken every coin, picking through all the rest of the stuff. And of course they took the big tip in the living room of the 2 bedroom suite as well.

So I make VERY sure to have just one spot that's an obvious tip so there are no misunderstandings.

We just leave the bills on the front edge of the sink.

At WDW, I've found they generally leave a housekeeping card with the name of the person who serviced your room on it. It's usually on the sink. I leave the tip under that. And yes, I tip every day, usually $2, sometimes $3 or more depending on the mess and how well cleaned it was the day before, or if I requested something special.

I just think it's a tough job. And anyone who has to clean up my mess (not that I'm messy) deserves a special thank you from me. But that's MHO and I know it's not everyone agrees. To each his own!

I voted tip differently only because we tip every day, but not in hopes of getting anything. I just think it's a thankless job and I want to brighten their day. It's only DH and i, and we leave $3/day in a "Mousekeeping" envelope that I print out at home. I put the $$ in before leaving home and just pull out an envelope each morning before we leave for the parks. We are very neat and don't need much, but I am hoping this helps someone out. I know it's not a tipped position, but I choose to do it anyway. It's not as though $3/day is going to make someone rich or us broke.

In December the head of Housekeeping introduced us to the housekeeper for our suite. She was really nice. We talked to her one day and found out she is a single Mom and works any and all overtime she can get. She was such a sweetie. My husband (the softie) found her one morning and personally gave her a very generous tip. He said talking to her gave him a reality check that we were very blessed to be able to afford a luxury vacation and he wanted her to be able to purchase Christmas gifts for her children without worry.

I believe that was the best part of our trip!! Can you tell, I think he is special!!

I take a stack of one dollar bills and envelopes with me. Then I tip $1 per person per day and put it in an envelope labelled "Mousekeeping". It's also nice to have single bills to tip bell services and magic express drivers.

I tip everyday that I get service (if I request no service then I don't tip). I usually will leave a tip on the last day regardless of whether I got service during my stay or not.

I have one time not left a tip, but that was due to a issue (issue with the maid, not the service overall).


I leave the money on top of a piece of paper that says Thank You. When I leave a note to ask for extra 'whatever' I always tip extra as well, or if I see the maid and ask for something I'll hand her a couple of dollars.

I don't use the 'not a tippable position' as a reason not to tip. All that means is that they do not have thier hourly pay cut in anticipation of tips. Waiters get below minimum wage because it is expected that they will get an average amount in tips so thier hourly pay is figured using around 15% as customer subsidized. Now anything beyond that is just gravy. for them. Housekeepers do not get thier hourly pay cut down because lots of people don't know or don't care to tip, but just like waiters if they do a good job then any money's or tips left for them above your hourly pay is gravy. If Disney did not want you to tip them then housekeeping would be a no tips allowed position like the greeters and concierge workers. They are NOT allowed to accept any tips and Disney is very clear on that policy. They get only what they are paid by Disney, no money from guests for extra services rendered.

We tip each day. For the two of us, we leave $4 each day. I live in an area which promotes tipping for Housekeeping, so it feels right to do so. Many hotels in PA leave little envelopes with the Housekeeper's name on it. They just assume you will fill it with some cash.

For the two of us we tip $5 daily...but not in hopes of anything being cleaner, better, ...whatever. When things aren't right we call, and it's always been taken care of.
