Dear Bruno Mars

From what I've heard, it sounds like "Just the Way You Are" is more of the exception. I like that one... and "Marry You" quite a bit. But this one, and it's repeated lyric of, "Your sex takes me to paradise" doesn't sit well with me. "Your love..." would be okay. Not creative, exactly, but at least more subtle! I can't have my 8yo walking around the house singing "Your sex takes me to paradise" and a lot of his songs are catchy enough (melody-wise) that they do get stuck in your head!

I completely understand. My two-year-old repeats EVERYTHING so we really have to be careful about television and radio. Luckily, I was very much born in the wrong decade and would rather listen to Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Dino, The Monkees, The Beach Boys, or Ricky Nelson. As a baby, The Beatles were able to calm my fussy daughter down like none other. I do miss that type of music.

I love pitbull as well. You know who samples alot? Flow Rida the rapper. Lisren to alot of same music as dd14. I hear the sample and df thinks it is a.brand new song lol.

:thumbsup2 I remember when Pras came out with Ghetto Superstar. It was all the rage and I just kept thinking, "Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton did this song over 10 years ago and it was called Islands in the Stream." Everyone told me I was wrong and crazy and dumb for thinking someone as unique and original as Pras would ever sample such crappy music as Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. Imagine their shock when it came out that Kenny and Dolly sang it, but it was written by The BeeGees.

'Cause Lord knows if there's anything cooler than Kenny and Dolly it's the BeeGees. :rotfl2:

Sampling of music has been prevelent for at least 15 years probably closer to 20 expecially in rap and pop. People do it all the time. As long as it is short then it's free to use, longer pieces do have to be 'footnoted' so to speak. Believe me if he uses too long of a piece, sting and the romantics will be right there demanding thier cut.
Actually longer than that.

I am old enough to remember when the copyright holder for the Chiffons "He's So Fine" sued George Harrison over "My Sweet Lord" and prevailed in court.

Then again the 80's band Men at Work lost a lawsuit about their song "Down Under" over a song written and published in the 1930's.

Wow I never put the 2 songs together before but now that you mention it they definitely sound similar.

I love Bruno Mars, but that "Locked Out of Heaven" is definitely my least favorite of his songs that I've heard. I hear a note or two in common here and there, but not anything more than that. :confused3

Your post reminds me of something my mom had said. Her first time ever in a bar, she walked in with my dad and heard Jimmy Buffet's Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw":rotfl: She said that she found herself wondering when music switched from I Wanna Hold Your Hand to that. Oh, and it took years to get her back in a bar.:rotfl2:

It did surprise me that the same artist that gave us Just the Way You Are came up with lines such as "Your sex takes me to paradise."

Did you miss The Lazy Song?

I like his music, but being blunt with lyrics is not uncommon for him :goodvibes

Check out Bruno Mars little mermaid on YouTube. I love it! He is incredible. Loved him on SNL!

I love "Locked out of Heaven" but the lyrics are uh, not ok to sing in the car! My teenage daughter likes him too, but we both agree that's a song we will just bop our heads to. :rotfl:

Even the classical composers borrowed themes and melodies from each other. It's been done for centuries. Find a good melody, why not use it again in another setting.

Sorry to drudge up this dead thread, but just wanted to say that Bruno Mars and Sting just sang Locked Out of Heaven on the Grammys and it was AH-MA-ZING! :woohoo:

Bruno Mars is awesome. :)

OMG are you watching the Grammys?! Sting is playing/singing with Bruno Mars!!!! OP you had it right from the beginning. :thumbsup2

:rotfl2: Well, according to Bruno none of it would be possible if it weren't for Bob Marley, so Sting stole from Bob Marley and then Bruno stole from Sting.

That was a great performance (as was much of last night's show). Bruno Mars is a talented guy. I think we'll see some surprising material come from his eclecticism. :)

That explains why I like that song since I'm not really a Mars fan.
