Is there really smoking allowed?

If your daughter has that much of an issue, and her breathing is that much of a concern, how will she survive in life. Where smoking is everywhere?

I'm not sure where you are from, but I'm with OP on this one. In my experience, smoking is not everywhere at all. I live in the SF Bay area, and I rarely come into contact with smoke/smokers. My children were actually 5 and 7 before they noticed it. Ironically, it was in Ireland right after we'd gotten off the plane and were standing in the taxi queue. I'll never forget DS7 asking very loudly what that horrible smell was (cringe ).

I have a child with Cystic Fibrosis, so I get the "need to avoid smoke" at all costs issue. I am also an ex-smoker, so I understand the "need" to smoke 1st thing in the morning, after dinner, and before bed. Everyone is paying A LOT of money to cruise Disney. The rates are basically the same for everyone, depending on when you book, this is not a money thing. I have sailed twice with verandah rooms and have not had a problem with smoke at all. If your neighbor does smoke, if you explain your daughter's situation to them nicely, maybe they will refrain from smoking out there during the times that you are there, or they would put their cigarettes out if you come out onto your balcony. I hope all goes well for you, I do understand, Brian can go from running around to the ER quickly.

As Disney fleet of ships grows, maybe they can make one ship completely smoke free. They can start there and see how it sells.

Why? Both sides paid same amount of money for the stateroom and by DCL rules they can smoke on their verandas....so why they should move them????

The other option is go on the cruise, but don't book a verandah stateroom, or keep the person with the severe reaction away from the verandah when smokers are present. DCL does specifically allow smoking on the verandahs. For that reason it would seem unreasonable to expect the smoker to be the one moved.

There's also no guarantee that if you are moved to another verandah stateroom, that one won't be next door to a smoker too.

I sure hope I don't get an extreme anti smoker beside us. I consider us "polite smokers", but at the end of the day, we ARE smokers. One of the perks of Disney is that you are able to smoke on balcony. I would hate to have the guilt of "ruining" someone's vacation because I was doing something within the regulations!

I had an interesting discussion in June on our cruise to Alaska (on HAL) with some folks from Europe and Asia. They respected the smoking rules, but did say it is interesting that for a country that is the home of the free, we accept such strict restrictions on smoking.

If non-smokers and smokers just try and be courteous, and respect each other, folks can be out on their balcony having a cigarette, then go in so others can go out and not having to breath the smoke.

I'll be damned if I just paid $9,000 and my daughter sits out there and we have someone smoking next to us.

151 Days out...Get your money back. If you and/or your daughter are that sensitive to cigarette smoke (for whatever reason), it's not worth it to worry about it from now until your cruise, in my opinion.

What about getting an inside room? My son is extremely sensitive to the smell of smoke (not allergic but no one would hear the end of it if he was around the smell a lot) and half the reason we booked an inside room was because I heard a cruising horror story about a family with a non-stop smoker out on the veranda next to them. I bet if you stick with your veranda room you'll be just fine though. The impolite smoker thing probably doesn't happen very often.

It would seem to me, mamamac that you are correct. If you have enough money, you can book every room in the ship and either leave the rooms empty or fill them with nonsmokers.

For the record, I don't smoke. I'll be glad to fill in some space, if you're offering.

We are nonsmokers with a veranda, and while I do not enjoy inhaling others second-hand smoke, I understand that it is their right, and it is perfectly within the laws/rules for them to smoke on their veranda.

It's also within the laws/rules for me to stand on my veranda and think of something super hysterically funny and laugh like Fran Drescher until the smoke goes away.

I completely agree with you! I am a smoker and so is my DH and we are extremely aware of our surroundings when we smoke. We have a two year old in which we do not even let him see us smoke! I always feel guilty and never want anyone to feel that I am being rude by sneaking in one of my three smokes a day! I also think there is some stereotypes being circulated on this thread because all us smokers and not inconsiderate jerks.

I'm not a smoker and my dad isn't either, my mom is but she doesn't like traveling much and would never get on a cruise ship. But if we had people by us they smoked I wouldn't mind unless they were really bad. Yes it can smell bad, but can't smell any worse then the pot/weed I had to deal with at warped tour a few years back. I can still smell it
