UPDATE - He's here, pics post 26! Lord of the Rings character names for furry puppy?

Well, it is settled in my home, we will be adding a new puppy. Looks like it will be a male plush/long coated German shepherd, to be a sibling and playmate to our female 3 year old plush GSD.

We are stumped on names. So far, all our pets have had names from my native country, but I compromised this time and said we could name the new pup something from Lord of the Rings. Problem is, there are alots of names we like, but that don't exactly roll off the tongue when you are yelling for the dog to come inside and stop with the early morning barking chain! So, I need opinions from all you DIS dog people - what's a good name for a furry male German shepherd?

So far, we have narrowed it down to -

Faramir (nice hair, kind and loving)

Boromir (neither is easy to yell out quickly!)

Eomer (had nice hair, brave, had a sister)

Thranduil (I like it, sounds unique and kingly)

Kili (fun, enjoys life, brave to the end)

Thorin (one child says no, too much like "Thor")

Gimli (DH's favorite, says it will be hairy and will swim
with hairy dog-women-present GSD LOVES pool!)

Pippin (another one that likes fun-pup is kind of goofy)

and then my DH's ultimate favorite, Gloin. All I hear is "groin".

I know there are also some more obscure names that Tolkien had in his books, but this is our list as we have narrowed it down. I welcome any other suggestions from the LOTR stories!

We won't have the pup for 4 more weeks but I will be sure to post pics once he is home and named!

I JUST watched these movies for the first time last week. I know...very late to the LOTR party, but it is what it is.

I would name him Legolas and you could call him Lego when you need to say it quickly. Samwise is good, too, but my son's name is Sam, so I am partial to that name anyways. Good luck and have fun with your new pup.

Merry or Frodo, really can't go wrong with any hobbit I think

I like Gimli and then Kili.

Most trainers I believe say that a dog with an "e" sound at the end of their name is easier to train.

I also love Pippen, but in our house it would end up being shortened to Pippi. Then you are moving from LOTR to a mischievous girl with red braids and freckles.

I like Gimli. Would avoid names ending in "o" because it can sound you are saying "no" to the dog.

My parents have named two of their dogs after LOTR characters, Arwen and Rosie.

Let me think, German Shephard. Love Baggins. Is this AKC naming too? Bilbo or Frodo Baggins of The Shire.

First thing that comes to my mind is Legolas, then Samwise, then Aragon.

Piglet too, if we had the chance to pick the long haired girl from the litter, she would have been called "Arwen" - she just looked like that name would fit, but alas, she was spoken for already.

Gimli may be growing on me. It is better than Gloin!

Never thought about the shortened version of Pippin, but yes, it probably would turn into Pippi!

We considered Legolas, but then one daughter said she would be calling it Leggy. No one else liked that. DH said he would call is Lass, that won't work for a male. Lego is a thought, but not sure how "Lego, No!" is going to work. If only I could get everyone to agree to calling the full name, it would be great!

Yes, I probably should stay away from names ending in "O". Hadn't really thought of that aspect, thanks for bringing it up! Guess that narrows it down a little bit.

Keep the names and suggestions coming! While we have some knowledge of LOTR and the Hobbit, we aren't experts and don't know all the obscure names with great meaning, so if you know them, would love to hear them!

We will be narrowing down our choices again, then picking the final name once we get the pup home and see what name he really fits. I sure do hope he isn't a Gloin!

I think Gimli is my favorite. I LOVE Thorin too, I have always wanted to name an animal that.

Baggins is cute, but when I hear it I see something more... baggy. A wrinkly shar-pei sort of dog, not a noble GSD sort of dog.

Totally wouldn't work for your situation, but I have always wanted two sister dogs that I could name Eowyn and Arwen. We are kind of Tolkien nuts around here.

I'm loving the suggestions. And agree with avoiding the end of the name being "o".

My top faves so far: Gimli, Pippin, Radaghast, Strider.

What is your current girl GS named? Maybe consider something that would flow well with her name.

I'm drawing a blank right now. I play Lord of the Rings Online (mmo- massive multi player online game) and have seen some really great names in my travels in game. But darn if I can't think of them now.
