Purchasing points later down the road

Hey all! We are purchasing a DVC and we are going through resale. So here is my question. Say later on down the line we want to purchase more points, can we do that through Disney, or just re-sale if we initially buy through resale? How would we add points to our current DVC if we purchase resale? Thanks!

You can add points later on through Disney or through resale, no restrictions there.

a couple of clarifying notes:

1) you can "add-on" through resale if you buy the same UY month and title the deed exactly the same way. your 2 contracts can still be willed or sold separately but will be tracked under the same membership number and will work together like 1 contract (at 11 months if you buy the same home resort or at 7 months if you buy a different home resort).

they might change this rule going forward but it has been allowed so far.

2) you can add pts under a different membership through resale by buying any UY month, but you cannot pool pts from both contracts to book a single night without using a transfer. (long story short, it's easier to have the same UY month).

3) assuming disney has the points available, it's easier (but more expensive) to add-on directly. again, you'd have to have the same UY month to "add-on" to your master contract - you could add a new membership by buying a contract directly subject to whatever minimum purchase they currently required.

your direct purchase pts would have access to cruises and wdw trades for the polynesian hotel, but your resale pts still would not.

The only thing you have to ensure is that the new purchase is titled exactly the same as the original resale, and the use year has to be the same to hold both contracts in the same account.

You should get the same use year because if you don't, you will not be able to combine points from the two contracts except by transferring between accounts.

So much helpful info! Thanks guys!
Another question. If you buy resale, there are those restrictions. If you buy add-on points via Disney, are those added on points subject to restrictions as well, since you originally bought re-sale?

like i said above, "your direct purchase pts would have access to cruises and wdw trades for the polynesian hotel, but your resale pts still would not."

but you'd need a lot of direct purchase pts to take advantage of those options as they tend to be expensive...

We just added 100 pts to what we already had. Bought into AKV, previously just owned at SSR. Two home resorts I believe is how it works now.

just understand that you can never combine AKV pts and SSR pts at the 11 month window. your AKV pts have access to booking AKV at 11 months out and your SSR pts have access to booking SSR at 11 months out - but your SSR pts cannot be used to book AKV at 11 months and vice-versa.

assuming they have the same UY month and are combined under the same membership number, you can pool them together at 7 months out to book whatever is available.

So does this mean if I currently own BCV March UY and adding VWL March UY, I can have them both under same membership number?

Yes. Definitely if you purchase your add on direct. For now, they have been allowing this for resale add ons as well, as long as both contracts are titled exactly the same way and have the same UY. This could of course be changed for resale purchasers at any time, if they decide they wish to make things more difficult on resale buyers.

i hope you don't mind me jumping in here but did i read correct above. . .

if i added points direct through disney with the same use year but at a diff resort i couldn't use the other home base points to book at the new home base 11 months out?

so example. Home base resale is AKV 280 pts. Ad direct home base of BLT 50 pts. Both Feb UY. when the 11 month window comes I can only use the 50 pts of BLT to book at that 11 month window and then at 7 months i could start to use the other 280 pts from AKV to add additional nights if needed.

right - no mixing till the 7 month window. whether direct or resale.

at 11 months out, you need that home resort's points to book that home resort - pts from another resort won't work.

if you wanted to book BLT at 11 months out, you could only use pts from the BLT contract. you could use banked BLT pts, current BLT pts and borrowed BLT pts at the 11 month window (a total of 50+50+50 = 150 BLT pts every 3 years), but all of the pts from the AKV contract would be sidelined until the 7 month window.

same thing with booking AKV at 11 months out. you can use your AKV pts at 11 months, but it's like you didn't add-on the 50 BLT pts until you get to the 7 month window.

Thanks Charles. Ya after I read this the second time it kinda was a dumb question!

One last thing though that I get missed answers from. The members cruise. I know you have to use direct sales points now, but friends of ours last year didn't have enough points (direct) but were able to pay the diff in cash. Are they still allowing this so that with a small direct sale one can access the members cruise. They have gone on them each year since they started them and they really have a great time.
