Stroller for a 6 year old???

I'm not getting this whole "embarrassment" thing. First, I don't think most people who bring a stroller for an older child plan to use it all day every day. It's likely for at night after a long day or 4-5 days into a trip when everyone is feeling the effects of walking miles a day. I also don't think anyone if forcing a child into a stroller....again, it's likely the child's choice because they are exhausted. Even taking breaks doesn't guarantee that you won't have tired legs.

Really? In everyday life who do you see in strollers? babies. maybe toddlers. No way would my kid want to be seen using a baby device anymore then she would want to be seen drinking from a bottle or wearing a diaper.

She is proud of her big girl status and that meant leaving baby items in the past.

I am glad you have such a strong, mature, athletic child. You should be proud of her. Please refrain from judging other children as I am sure you wouldn't want your child to be judged by other adults either.

Did you bother to read my other posts - or just the one?

I could give a flip if you push your husband/wife/mother/sister/brother around in a stroller. I was curiously asking how these 6,7,8 year olds feel about being in a stroller. Someone else said they didn't understand the embarrassed notion - so I explained what my 5 year old would say about it.

Get over your own insecurities and realize no one cares what you are doing on your vacation so long as you aren't harming another human being.

I do not agree, but hey, what do I know?

I think this thread is interesting. PPL aren't rudely bashing others, just doing so subtly. Does it really make ppl feel better to do this?

+1

Understand people, each family has their own unique to them situations.
Do what's best for you and your family to enjoy and get the most out of WDW.

In my experience at Disney, most 6 and 7 year olds would happily tour the parks in a stroller without being embarrassed (my kids included, especially after a day touring with me!) I think the embarrassment issues may come from the parents, not the kids themselves.

I like to think my children are confident enough with themselves to ride in a stroller at the age of six without worrying about embarrassment.

:thumbsup2 My kids have self confidence issues I guess.

I wouldn't be embarrassed if she wanted to... though I'd be pretty surprised!

Ok! Loud and clear.

Exactly!! Very well stated. My DD5 would never even think to be embarrassed about riding in a stroller if she was uncomfortable walking during a long Disney trip. Folks, we're not talking about pushing 6 yr olds around the mall everyday. I'm amazed that some people can't see the difference between a 6 yr old riding in a stroller for an hour or so during a Disney trip vs riding in a stroller at home.

I would just like to say, in relation to the whole topic of embarrassment or looking ridiculous, I've had multiple times when I've left the park so exhausted I can barely stand - if someone offered me, a healthy 30 year old woman, a stroller to sit in you can bet I would have taken it :lmao: If little legs are tired, who am I to judge?

And knowing the way the internet works... your picture would end up here for ridicule.... pretty sure there was a picture here last year of an adult women in a stroller.

No one (here in this thread, so far) is passing judgement... expressing opinions yes judging? No.

I'll be taking my two great-nephews (and their mothers) to WDW in May. One is 6 and the other is 3. I'm planning on suggesting to the mothers that they each get a stroller. I know it would make the trip much less stressful.
The 3 year old has some balance issues when walking so at this time he would not be able to walk all over the parks. The 6 year old has some behavioral issues and I could see him being out of sorts if his cousin was riding instead of walking. Plus he would be miserable once he got tired.

I know tons of people use strollers at WDW evdery day. Has there ever been problems with people coming out of a ride or show and the stroller being gone? How do you handle that? If it was a Disney rental, do you just go back and tell them someone took it or are you responsible for the stroller?

Just wondering as this will be my first time using any stroller at WDW.

My DD used a stroller until she was 8. We don't tend to get caught up in what others think so embarrassment was not an issue. There were many reasons this worked for my family so do what works for you and enjoy your trip.

We went 11/28-12/4 and our DDs are 4 and 7. We rented a double stroller. I wasn't sure if we would use it but I am so glad we had it. We did end up using it quite a bit. Both girls walked some and rode some. DD7 ended up coming down with a fever virus while we were there so she was wiped out. We could've just stayed in the room the whole time but it peaked in the evenings and she was fever free during the day. But she was so tired. The city mini double was so easy to push, even with 85lbs of kids in it.

Obviously this isn't going to happen to everyone but for us, having the stroller really helped out.

I did tell DD7 that next time there would be no stroller for her...lol.

Me, too. I have all kinds of feet issues and would happily ride in something if someone would push me!

To the op, obviously some folks have strong opinions on this (although I'm not sure why) but do what works for your family. The good news is that every park has strollers if you suddenly need one.

We have a 2yr old ds and 6 yr old dd. We have tried on several occasions to go with a single stroller and failed miserably. What we did was purchase one of those boards that attaches to our nice umbrella stroller. (Joovy was out of our budget) It's perfect for me because I always know where both of them are. Dd has hips that are turned out just enough to cause issues with muscle development that we have to remind her to"fix her feet" when she's sitting on the floor, and she has flat feet. Since we got her knew insoles fitted her legs don't "get tired" as quickly so she's better about standing for longer periods of time. But, I still wouldn't do disney without some sort of stroller or ride on for her.

My youngest refused to go in his stroller by 18 months (nightmare!), but even he, up until the age of 6, happily accepted a stroller in WDW. We ended up doing the package one year and it was great...we'd just grab one when he got tired, and then we actually liked it to hold the backpack, etc. when we were on rides. Yes, 5 or 6 is old for day to day stroller riding, but in Disney? I'm with the 30 year old a few posts back who would hop in one at the end of the day :rotfl2:

I just read a wonderful quote in today's newspaper from Fran Lebowitz:
"And these kids are all riding in these strollers, texting each other. I've got a rule I'd like to propose. If your child is old enought to text, he's old enough to walk."
Thoughts?

so...your're raising a very judgemental 5 year old.....super !!!!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

She is raising a typical 5yo. Your typical kid looks at diapers, bottles and strollers as baby things. And they are proud to not be babies, so they shun these things.

There are parents who breast feed five year olds, have four year olds who still have not potty trained and have six year olds in strollers. That is FINE ofr those parents and kids...but your typical 5yo kid will refuse a stroller on the basis that it is for babies u til they're so tired they just want to sit somewhere.
