Suggestions...canon wide angle lens

I have a canon 50D and I'm looking to invest in a wide angle lens. I have a budget of around 500.00. I'll mainly use it for landscape photos. Any suggestions?

the best for crop models (like your 50D) is the Canon 10-22 (sharp in center and corners) Others are Sigma 10-20, Tokina 11-16, Sigma 12-24, etc.

If you're looking in the $500 range, most of the above mentioned models are pricier than that. The Tamron 10-24 and Tokina 12-24 both come in at under $500 before tax. Personally, I shoot with the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 and although it's a little over your budget ($550) it's worth it IMO. just a great lens.

I haven't considered anything...yet. I know that I love taking landscape and read that wide angle work the best for those kind of pictures.

I have been browsing for a while now and DH surprised me, for my birthday today, a new Canon EF 20mm F/2.8 USM. The only thing is I'm not sure if this is the right choice for me. It's not like I can try it out for a couple months and then send it back, B&H gives you 2 days to decide if you want to send it back. I had wanted to do some more research on the right one to choose but now I have to make the choice immediately. I don't work well under pressure...lol

I have the Canon 28-135 kit lens, Tamron 75-300 mm, Canon nifty fifty, and the Tamron 28-80 mm.

I shoot with a predecessor to the Canon 28-135, the Canon 28-105 f/3.5-4/5 on my 50D. And it really is pretty long for some things. If I were shopping with just those lenses in my bag I'd be looking to get something in that 18-28mm range before going any wider.

You might be able to find the Canon 10-22 on their refurbished site for $650 or so. I know its out of your range but wouldn't you rather have the best and spend an extra $100/$150 to feel good about your purchase? It's a highly rated lens. On Amazon they are selling used ones for $598. Never purchased anything used through Amazon resellers though.

I have the Sigma 10-20mm. Its a good lens and it wont break the bank. My UWA is more of a specialty lens and not used often. I think will come in handy at Disney (did not have this lens when i last went) and good for city and travel photography.

I mostly do landscape photography and use my 17-50 2.8 mostly for that type.

You have an opportunity to add something to your bag here. What you are looking at is going to leave you wanting something more fairly soon. The wider end will definitely be welcome, but I would take this chance to do one of 2 things:

1) If you're going with something with a shorter focal range like this, then I'd want something faster with a 2.8 aperture. I think the Tamron version might be near your budget. That then steps up your game on 2 fronts.

2) If you're going to stick with a slower lens, I'd want a little more range. Not sure how far out of budget the super zooms are, but I'd take a look. Maybe an 18-200 or an 18-135 so at least you get more of an all-around lens. I have a Tamron 18-270. I think that one's out of your budget, but maybe a used or refurbished one? I'd at least investigate.

It just seems like you could solve one problem only to find yourself wanting something else in the very near future.

I will saw do not get the canon 18-55. this is a standard kit lens and will do little for you other then being wider then you have already. IQ will not be any better then you have now.

the sigma 10-20 is good for the UWA but after seeing the lenses you have already this may be too wide and not fill a gap for you.

something on the 17 end would work well for you and be wider then anything you have now. The sigma 17-70 may fit the bill for you really well. its 2.8 on the 17 end and tops out at 4 on the 70 end. 2.8 is great but only needed if you do alot of indoor stuff and even at that 2.8 may not be enough.

the 17-70 was on sale last week for 299 at B&H. This model is being replaced very soon and you should be able to get a good price on it.

I was close to getting the 17-70 but decided i wanted the 2.8 so i got the Sigma 17-50 2.8. Its a great lens but at times i want a little more reach without changing lenses.

I have the Tamron 17-50 2.8. Its what is on my camera most of the time when I am out at the local parks. Overall have been very happy with it. It is very sharp. Also the one time I needed it serviced(optics replaced), it was done relatively quickly and didnt cost an arm and leg.

Two IMO minor drawbacks. 1. It does show more CA in some situations than a Canon would. 2. Its zoom rotates the opposite of regular canon lens's.

Technically the Canon 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 is entry level and the 28-135 you have is a mid-grade lens. A lot of people get hung up on this distinction and while I think it carries a little weight, it's not the whole story. The 18-55 is a very solid entry level lens. I use my 18-55 kit all the time when I want wider shots than my 28-105 will afford me. And when you consider that you can pick it up super cheap used from places like KEH it's a great way to add that focal range without spending a lot of cash. However, if you can afford the price I'd go for the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 over the Canon 18-55 in a heartbeat. I'd skip the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 myself. I'd also skip the all in one's mentioned (like the 18-200). You won't get more range than your 28-135 with them and your 28-135 is a better quality lens than most of the all in one zooms.

Now... One the thing to remember is that we're all giving you our personal preferences. We can tell you what we'd do, but it may not be the best thing for you to do. Only you can figure out which lens is best for your shooting style.

I have to agree...I love spending DH's money.

Now I have it narrowed down to the Sigma 17-70mm or the Tamron 17-50mm.

My own experience with Sigma has not been very good. When I had got my Tamron, I had originally wanted the Sigma. Problem was, when trying out the Sigma I couldnt find one that focused correctly. I cant remember if it was back focusing or front focusing but each one I tried did it. Where as the Tamron was spot on. So I walked out with the Tamron.

Now I have it narrowed down to the Sigma 17-70mm or the Tamron 17-50mm.

The Tamron is a great lens. We usually shoot at Disney with 2 bodies - one typically has the Tokina 11-16 on it, the other the Tamron 17-50. The wider the better for shooting in Disney parks, IMO.
