Ever play along with phoe scammer?

It's not the payment.

My phone ringing disturbs me.

I don't want me and my family disturbed by STRANGERS, who in my mind have no business calling me.

I don't want people I know getting a busy signal because Rachel from Cardholder Services. has the phone tied up leaving me ANOTHER message.

If your car is in the driveway, you mind if those homeless folks down the street just sit in it? They aren't going to use gas, or even turn the key and use up battery power. It won't cost you a penny for them to sit in YOUR car.
Well ... my car would be locked, so they wouldn't have any way to get into it unless I let them in. And if they knock on the door to ask, I can either not answer the door or I can answer it and say no. Just like with the phone, the choice is always mine. I'm in control of what I answer and what I don't.

If the phone rings and I'm not close enough to it to see Caller ID, I let it go to VM. If someone I know starts talking, I pick up and take the call. If it's a hang-up or a sales call, I don't. If my phone ringing disturbs me, I turn the ringer off and the speaker down and let everything go to VM.

It just seems to take so much more energy to be rude to a telemarketer than it does to just ignore the call.

:earsboy:

LOL. I guess when you argue long enough it eventually sinks to this level.....
Yup. And there will be a point in time when I'm arguing with someone else and I'll say, "OK ... imagine your driveway ..." and they'll wonder where the heck I came up with THAT! :rotfl2:

As far as telemarketing calls stealing from you just by calling you ~ :rotfl:.

Why should anyone have to turn their ringer off and miss calls they want just to avoid annoying telemarketers? They shouldn't.

I do agree with your second sentence, though!

Just because something is legal does not mean it is right. Yes, it is legal for companies to call people who aren't on the DNCL and solicit their business. It does not make it right. It's rude, plain and simple, since it's an intrusion into people's lives. Even if you don't answer, the ringing itself is an intrusion, since you have to check and see who is calling.

If someone takes a job as a telemarketer, then they know that they are signing up to do something that is rude and annoys people, and I have little respect for people that choose to do that. I won't physically hurt them by blasting something in their ear, but I will hang up on them.

For the record, we are on the DNCL which helps, but the list isn't perfect and is often ignored.
Not everyone chooses to do telemarketing. I mean, obviously, they say yes to the job and they take the job, so it seems like their choice. But sometimes it's the only job available. And if you need a job, you sometimes take jobs you don't want to do. I've had to take jobs that I didn't want, and I'm sure there were people who decided that they had no respect for me because I took that job (and yes, one of them WAS a telemarketer). But when unemployment runs out and you don't have any money coming in, you sometimes take what's available. I didn't "choose" some of the jobs I had. I did them because I needed the money.

We have this one company that is saying that we owe them money and they will serve us papers if we don't pay....the thing is they A) don't have my fiance's name right and B) have been calling and leaving messages for 6 months now, via a robot, and we still haven't seen any legal papers....we know it's a scam (we looked up the "company")

I'm always tempted to call the number and say "ok....serve us the papers but there is no one by that name living here" but I don't bother, we just let it go to voicemail.

He is the one that said his phone ringing disturbs him. I gave him a simple solution.

I'm guessing you missed the part where I said I never answer calls from telemarketers.

He is the one that said his phone ringing disturbs him. I gave him a simple solution.

Yeah, the simple solution is I turn off MY phone so I can't be notified when MY friends are calling just so I can't hear when people I don't even know are calling.

By the way.....All I did was give my opinion of what I think about telemarketers.

It's obvious who the people are that don't believe there should be ANY other opinions except theirs.

How very ironic.

On my phone, if I don't want to answer a call and the ringing is distrubing me, I just hit the OFF button. The phone keeps ringing but in silent mode.

The next call, it rings again.

You can try that, unless the energy of pushing a button would be considered stolen energy. ;)

There is only one little thing that makes me curious.

If so many people don't mind telemarketers, if there are so many simple solutions for dealing with telemarketers, I wonder why the public overwhelmingly demanded the Do Not Call Registry.

I am on the federal do not call list and the state do not call list. I am well aware of the exemptions to the do not call list (Political calls, legit surveys etc.) Any telemarketer that calls me and does not qualify under one of the law's exemptions - is breaking the law and intruding upon my time.

As such I will do as I please if they call me. I did not ask to be called. In fact by placing my number on two different do not call lists - I have explicitly instructed them not to call me. If they call me anyway - watch out! If they are working for a dishonest organization that ignores the do not call list - they need to get a new job - or suffer through the abuse. There are legit telemarketing jobs - get one of those - and stop working for crooks.

The most effective response that I have found is to feign interest in what they are offering (new windows, sell my timeshare etc.) and then just when they think they've got a sale I go "But - I am on the do not call list and by calling me you have shown yourself to be a dishonest businessman and because of that I will not do business with you"

However, I look at someone using my telephone line without my permission as theft.

I'm curious, when you call the police to report the theft, do they come to you or do they have you come down to the station to fill out a report?

You are honestly curious about that?

Everyone is giving their opinions. I gave mine.

That's yours?

Another wonderful day at the Dis.

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Good God, I'm sure if we wait long enough you'll give us a gem like "I know you are but what am I?"

My favourite story about something like this is from my mother. It was a telemarketer (a legitimate one actually trying to sell a real product) not a scammer, though.

We lived in Georgia at the time (and my mom hated it there). The woman called and asked if she would be interested in buying a cemetery plot nearby. My mom's answer?

"I wouldn't be caught dead in Georgia!"

They both had a good laugh at that one.

Then just don't answer the phone. These people are WORKING (sorry to shout, but it doesn't seem to be clear). They're employed. They're earning a living. They're not on unemployment or welfare. Again, that human being doesn't care why you don't want to be called. The employer cares THAT you don't want to be called.

Or hang up.

::yes::I'm curious what a poster who apparently makes her living as a social worker would suggest they do instead of that minimum wage telemarketing job? People who takes those jobs don't normally do it because it's their first choice. They do it to feed their families.
