So my dad is always slightly behind in Christmas shopping so yesterday when he realized he hadn't bought my mom anything yet he started asking me for ideas. I remember a couple of things she had mentioned and so we went out and bought them. Today I was talking to my mom and asked her what she would want for Christmas. She told me that every year she makes a small list and my dad goes out and buys everything she asks for so as soon as she sees the box she knows exactly whats in it. She said it would be nice if she actually got some things that she had absolutly no idea what it was. So my question is what would you get your mom as a surprise gift or if you're a mom what would you think was a cool gift you hadn't asked for? I'm 15 but price doesn't really matter as long as it's reasonable because my dad will mostly be paying. TIA

For me, my favourite thing to do in all the world is travel. I'm always the one to plan our family vacations (which I actually prefer since I enjoy doing it so much) but it would be nice for me to be surprised for once with a trip. Doesn't have to be anything big...even just driving for a couple hours to stay overnight in a hotel with DH and my two kids would be lovely. I like the spontaneous, adventure aspect of it and of course, spending time together with them.

But that's just me. This may not be something that would work for or be desired by your mom...

I think this is a great post. My opinion is to get something that she would like but not normally buy herself...something totally impractical. A trip would be great... does she like plays? look to see if there are any Broadway plays in your area. I'd love wicked tickets or something like that. Or how about a gift certificate to a day spa? Some places have 1/2 day or full day spas. I love that you're really putting a lot of thought into what to get your mom and i think she will too.

A gift certificate for a mani/pedi or a facial would be lovely. I would also love jewelry, real jewelry not the boxed stuff that is in every store right now.
Gift certificates for her favorite stores so she could go shopping for herself (most moms don't shop for themselves.)

What are her hobbies, gardening, sewing, crafting you could do a basket with those themes.

If she likes to travel you could surprise her with a trip.

It really depends on your budget.

I have to say that I agree with your Mom about making a list and getting everything on it. It would be nice if my husband would surprise me with something he thought I would like.

I don't know where you live but most larger cities have Live on stage productions and I would love tickets to see a wonderful musical etc and dinner before or after.

I want to add that the show doesn't have to be now, it could be for a future one as well.

I agree with tickets to a show or something, but if it were me I would prefer it be something I would enjoy, but I could do with someone, even if it was one of my kids. So TWO tickets would be better.

Also, in our house the kids and DH always get the tech stuff and I'm stuck with borrowing theirs or nothing at all, so if she likes music or reading maybe a kindle or ipod would be nice.

I know Christmas was no fun at all the year that DH and the kids all got games and ipods and I got flannel sheets . Dh was trying to be thoughtful, I do get cold at night so I didn't say anything, but I would have preferred something fun for me.

Oh, one more idea, if there's something she's always wanted to learn maybe lessons or a class, like horseback riding, rock climbing, a cooking class, yoga, etc.

I think that tickets to something or classes as other have already said is a great idea. Also something completely impractical. I just bought a flowering tea set for a co-worker, which is pretty unique I think. You could google " flowering tea set".

I agree that if you can afford it, a fun show, sporting event or even a cool concert would be cool. I got my parents tickets to the Producers when it debuted in LA for Christmas and another year tickets to the Palm Springs Follies (they lived nearby at the time) and they LOVED both of those. So start checking ticketmaster for local venues.

Other ideas:
* Piece of jewelry -- generally can't go wrong
* book, mug, tea/coffee/cocoa and nice sweater or cozy blanket
* DVD, popcorn and blanket
* something relating to her hobbies. Gardening, reading, scrapbooking, wine, etc.
* fun calendar
* framed pics of you guys or other photo gifts
* magazine subscription to a mag that she likes -- I got my mom the People subscription and that is her annual gift. She loves it.
* cookbook, kitchen gadgets, etc.

My mom is a knitter, so this year I got her a handmade ceramic yarn bowl. I think she'll love it!

From your dad, though, I'd say he would probably be able to surprise her with some jewelry (if he has good taste - I used to have to go jewelry shopping with my dad at your age, lol!)

My mother bought me a pedicure gift cert for my birthday and I love every single minute of my pedicure because it was just for me and I got 45 stress free minutes.

Not everybody is into pedicure or massages or whatever but I would say anything that she likes but would not buy herself would be a hit. NO APPLIANCES no matter how much the household needs them.

Etsy is my go to for interesting gifts. There are so many great ideas and unique things, right along with the practical.

If she doesn't want to travel, what about an overnight with a show at your local city. Hotels in Boston (where we are) have really cool packages for gifts.

My mother bought me a pedicure gift cert for my birthday and I love every single minute of my pedicure because it was just for me and I got 45 stress free minutes.

Not everybody is into pedicure or massages or whatever but I would say anything that she likes but would not buy herself would be a hit. NO APPLIANCES no matter how much the household needs them.

It's funny you should say no appliances because every Christmas there is an arguement about our kitchen. My mom HATES it. Every year when i ask her what she wants she says nothing but then she says no wait you know what I really want -to re-do the kitchen. And every year I tell my dad that and he says that that cant be a gift because its for the whole family. So he says we should it but not as a christmas gift. But 8 years later our kitchens the same as when we bought the house

I just wanted to thank everyone who posted an idea on here. They were all amazing and my mom said that this was the best Christmas ever We ended up making her a gift basket with bath things in it along with a few cds and movies. We also found a grill that she had asked for last year but we couldn't find anywhere! We actually find it while at walmart looking for a movie she wanted so thank you!
