My youngest a big reader wants for Christmas.
Any dissers got feed back. I was leaning toward Kindle as I thought she might like joinging KDP select for a month or two, she likes Nook.

I'm not sure what you mean by she might like joining KDP. KDP is Kindle Direct Publishing, a self-publishing platform for authors. Is she an author?

As for the Kindle and the Nook. The devices themselves are very similar. People fuss around a lot about one or the other being superior but in my experience --- whichever one you buy she will probably end up really liking it.

In my opinion it really comes down to where you want to buy your books and in what format because format shifting from ePub to Mobi (Kindle format) and dealing with the DRM takes some technical expertise and then there are all kinds of "Is that legal!" arguments. Many people don't know how to do that and they aren't interested in figuring it out.

If she prefers to shop at Barnes and Noble, she'd probably prefer the nook. If she prefers to shop at Amazon, then get the Kindle. If she utilizes a library, most of them are offering both Kindle and ePub formats now. With the recent Agency Pricing settlement, price wars on at least some of the eBooks are about to heat up again this spring. Whether or not that factors into the decision is probably going to depend on what she likes to read and who publishes it.

She is in 5th Grade but spells better than I do

Kindle Prime sounded like she might enjoy it, I assume they have parental controls.

She loves Harry Potter more than anything in the world. We ussually shop at B&N but we are not close enough for her to benefit in any way. I think being in te store allows you cool optoions doesn't it?
The Nook that is $159 would the Kinle Fire be its counterpart?

I have a Nook Color I got the month they came out. I love it. If Nook is what she wants that is what I would get her.

Both have a large selection of free books. But you wont usually find the best sellers for free. Both have systems to borrow from libraries, but not all libraries have the system for either or both.

Nook-One hour in store reading of most titles each day. I enjoy this. I can take my Nook to the store and start reading to see if I want to buy something. Or just sit and enjoy a coffee and read.

Free Nook Fridays. A new free book every Friday. Various titles, sometimes best sellers, sometimes new authors.

Kindle-You can borrow one free book a month if you are also an Amazon Prime member. Amazon Prime is $80 a year, so IMO, not worth it just for one book a month.

Kindle Direct Publishing is more author friendly than Nook's direct publishing service, so there are more books that are free on Kindle, but again, these are all self published.

With the free books you have to be careful you know what you are downloading. Because with both Nook and Kindle there are a lot of self published books that might not have any reviews or a good overview. There are a few books and short stories I have started to read that I wish I had not. There are also many free books that I read and loved.

I believe Kindle would be better for future wise. With a Kindle + Amazon prime, you can also watch movies on Amazon site. Not too familiar with the Nook or Kindle though...

Prime is a great service, but for book borrowing alone it's not. We have it and use it for the free 2 day shipping and get our moneys worth. I don't use the Kindle so I cant borrow books anyhow and we hardly ever use the streaming. We can never find anything we are interested in that is free.

And I doubt any of your books are what I was talking about. Unless you are writing horror disguised as something else.

I have a kindle and love it. When I get a book, it can be shared between 5 devices so I have a kindle and the kindle app on my phone and iPad. DD has the apps so she can share my books.

Someone mentioned free books on Nook. There are free books for the kindle, also. Two ways to find them easily instead of just searching amazon kindle books is "Pixel of Ink" on Facebook. They list free and discounted books daily and 2-3 times a day on the weekends. It's been a great source for me. They list them, a summary and rating of the book and a link that takes you straight to "buying" it through amazon. The other way is kindleboards.com. You may want to look at that sight before you decide. They post mostly about kindles, obviously but also about nooks.

Also, IMO you can't beat amazon's customer service. They've been great to answer questions quickly.

I think she'll like either one.

I love our Nooks. I bought the Nook Color when it first came out and I loved it. My kids loved it too. So much so, I could never get near it. Not wanting to come between their desire to read, I bought myself a Nook Simple Touch a short time later. Now everyone is happy.

At this point it all comes down to which company you want to do business with. They both have similar devices that do similar things for similar prices.

I prefer Amazon CS over Barnes and Nobles' so I stick with Kindle (I own a Kindle2, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD)

I do have Prime but that is more for the 2 day shipping than the instant streaming and lending library (though I did get rid of Netflix because of the instant streaming).

I also like the fact that if I'm having trouble with my Nook, I can bring it to the nearest store and talk with a real live person face to face. This was handy in the beginning when we were getting to know how to use it.

I have the Simple Touch Nook and have loved it. I am actually asking for Christmas an upgrade, to the Nook Glowlight. It will make a world of difference to have a backlight built in. The book light that you have to attach to see at night has been a pain. So my biggest advice, with either the the Kindle or Nook (if you are getting a strict E reader only) is to get the one with the light built in. I just bought the Kindle PaperWhite for my son, he wanted it because he said there are tons of free photography articles and books he can read on the train. I was lucky because the closest Best Buy just got a new shipment in yesterday, I read they are very hard to find right now in stock.

We've had our Nook Colors for almost 2 years now, and love them. Most people are particular with one or the other, (Nook vs Kindle), so if the recipient is asking for a Nook, then you'd be safe to buy a Nook! In my extended family we have Nook and Kindle lovers!

Recently, I did look into the Kindle Paper White. The reason I decided against it was this: The Kindle Paper White is advertised at $119. But if you don't want "special offers" popping up, then you pay an extra $16. Ok. So then I notice that it doesn't come with a power adapter....how crazy is that?! Something else to charge extra for. So that's an extra $19.99.

So the Kindle Paper White goes from $119 to $158.99.....and at that time, I was comparing it with the Nook Simple Touch w/GlowLight, which is only $119....comes with a power adapter, and no ads! Funny thing is after looking at reviews for the Simple Touch w/GlowLight, I decided I'd rather have the Nook HD. So the HD is on my Christmas list!

Amazon has announced a new subscription program targeted for children called Kindle Free Time. It has unlimited time spent with selected apps, movies and books. Cost is $2.99 a month per child if you have Amazon Prime, maximum of $6.99 or $4.99 a month per child without Prime, maximum of $9.99

I did a quick scan of the books offered and it seems slanted toward the younger Grade School/Pre-school ages to me. Many of the movies and shows listed are already free with Amazon Prime.

I would go with Kindle because I hear Bezos is experimenting with a Netflix for ebooks type thing. Would be in heaven if that was true.

I am also a Kindle person. I got the Kindle 2 a year and a half ago and literally read it every night. I am getting a Kindle Paperwhite for Christmas, the $119 version with the special offers. The special offers are just ads that pop up as the screen saver instead of just some other picture. It won't affect your reading and it is much cheaper. Also the charger I already have will work with the Paperwhite so that is not an issue for me. DH got a Nook Touch as a rebate for some tires he bought. He doesnt use it at all. I tried to use it but did not find it as user friendly as the Kindle but maybe it was just that I was used to the Kindle and did not have a need to use the Nook.

I am just now looking at the Pixel Ink thing on Facebook. There is a similar page on Facebook, KOTC (Kindle on the Cheap) that posts cheap and free books several times a day. There is one for Nook as well but I don't know the name.

If you think you will want to read outside at the pool or the beach the Kindle Fire or the Nook equivilant will not work that great. The glare is really bad. Before I got my first Kindle I was on vacation. While I was sitting at the pool there was someone on one side of me with the Kindle 2 and another lady with the Nook. I talked to both of them and looked at them and the lady with the Nook admitted it was hard to read in the bright sunshine. Something to consider.

I have a Nook Tablet and my third grade daughter has a Nook Color and we love them.
